"Mario and the Red Baron Koopa" is the thirtieth animated episode of the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "Gorilla My Dreams."

Plot[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad are in Pastaland, where they are participating in a celebration for driving off King Koopa in the episode "The Pied Koopa." Unfortunately, while they eat pasta, King Koopa returns with an off-model Lakitu in tow. The two villains cause it to rain on the picnic and destroy the pasta with bolts of lighting. Lakitu creates further damage by throwing out his spiny eggs and spawning spines. King Koopa then demands that Pastaland sees him as its ruler and leaves a snow machine to freeze the land.

The Marios, not about to give up Pastaland, climb a giant beanstalk and try to shut off the machine. Unfortunately, King Koopa finds out about it and cuts the beanstalk down with a fireball. The group falls into the snow where Toad conveniently finds a lever, which activates an elevator to Cloudland. There, the Mario Bros. find a used flying carpet salesman named Sam Shalam who sells them a "fireproof" magic carpet.

The Mario Brothers attempt to fight King Koopa off, but he easily outmaneuvers them and burns their carpet away. They fall to their near-doom, but the citizens of Pastaland save them with a rescue trampoline. They return to the carpet salesman and confront him. When he discovers they are up against King Koopa, he gives them free carpets on the basis that King Koopa stole a carpet from him.

Back on the surface, the Marios fit their carpets onto the wings of a biplane and take Toad with a bomb plant. With a faster and more maneuverable vehicle, they manage to damage Lakitu's cloud and blow up the snow machine. King Koopa attempts to blast the Marios away but loses the fight. His carpet is destroyed and he falls away vowing to return. The Princess gives her friends the rank of Pastaland heroes. Mario, as usual is more interested in food than the title and the medals that come with it.

Trivia/Goofs[]

• This episode marks the second time Marios have been to Pastaland.
• This is the first time the Marios have been to two lands in one episode.
• A reference is made to the Jan & Dean song "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena."
• Lakitu and Spiny's first appearance in this show.
• A Spiny is found in the pasta but the pot was under a table and Lakitu didn't start throwing the eggs until after the Marios moved it. There was no way one could get into the pasta.
• Even though the episode title (possibly based on the Peanuts book Snoopy and the Red Baron) refers to King Koopa as "The Red Baron Koopa", he never actually uses that name.
• This is the second time that Kenny Loggins' song, "Danger Zone" was played in a The Super Mario Bros. Super Show episode, the first being in "Brooklyn Bound."
