Nute Gunray was a cowardly and greedy Neimodian business executive who served as the Viceroy of the Trade Federation during the final years of the Galactic Republic. He secretly served the Sith Lord Darth Sidious and, as a member of the Executive Separatist Council, was one the highest-ranking official in the Confederacy of Independent Systems. At the end of the Clone Wars, he was betrayed by Sidious and slain by the Sith's apprentice Darth Vader. He's also Padme Amidala's arch-nemesis.
In the prequel trilogy, he was portrayed by Silas Carson who also played Ki-Adi-Mundi in the prequel trilogy and The Ood in Doctor Who. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he was voiced by Tom Kenny, who also voiced Scaramouche the Merciless in Samurai Jack.
When he was the Viceroy of the Trade Federation, Nute Gunray was powerful, opportunistic, deceptive and ready to kill for financial gain. He showed himself as being a stingy and calculating entrepreneur who was mainly concerned with maximizing profits and his own well-being. Because of his greed, he was very receptive to Darth Sidious' influence, who used him as a pawn for his sinister plans, when the Republic imposed taxation on commercial roads.
Under Palpatine's orders, he was hesitant to break the law, as he demonstrated a good sense of organization and relatively good leadership. Due to Amidala's role in his defeat on Naboo, Gunray greatly resents the politician and made several attempts on her life in the years following the invasion of Naboo. He generally prefers to flee when conflict occurs, leaving this task to his droids.
Gunray regularly used bribery to get away with his crimes and used the view of Neimoidians being cowards to excuse himself as merely a pawn when captured, which led to his enemies underestimating him. Sidious wasn't pleased with Gunray and often would delegate matters in regard to him to Count Dooku. Gunray also developed a rivalry with Dooku and General Grievous, the latter of whom he accused Dooku of giving special treatment to. Grievous, meanwhile, also detested the Neimoidian almost immediately after the latter dismissed him as a mere droid.
Despite preferring to leave matters to the droids, Gunray was still capable of taking them into his own hands when he has no choice anymore, as he knocked out Commander Gree from behind during Ventress' attempt to rescue him on the Tranquility. His own cowardness eventually turns to be his own downfall. Despite this, he doesn't even attempt to do anything when Vader kills him but beg. Gunray was unaware that he was just a pawn of Sidious the entire time. When Sidious informed him and the other Separatist leaders that Vader would protect him, Gunray and the Council fell for his deception, which led to their deaths. This proves that Nute Gunray is nothing more than a coward who only cares about greed, fortune, and himself.
