Yularen: Sir, I-I did a bit of research.
Skywalker: And?
Yularen: I believe the opposing commander is none other than Admiral Trench.
Skywalker: If I remember my military history, wasn't he vaporized at the Battle of Malastare Narrows?
Yularen: That's what I thought too but the tactics employed... The efficiency of the Droids' maneuvers... And then there's this. The last time I saw that symbol... Well, let's just say I lost a lot of good men that day.
Skywalker: What do I need to know?
Yularen: I have seen his work first hand. A Corporate fleet was blockading Malastare; a fleet led by Trench. That's why I recognize the tactics. He tore our ships apart. We barely escaped with our lives. In the end, a Jedi led task force moved in to settle the matter. Trench's ship was destroyed and we assumed he went down with it.
Skywalker: Are you sure it's him?
Yularen: It's possible. Not every captain goes down with his ship.
~ Admiral Wullf Yularen and Anakin Skywalker about Admiral Trench.
I smell fear, and it smells good.
~ Admiral Trench's famous quote.

Admiral Trench is a major antagonist of the 2008-2020 animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, serving as the main antagonist of both the episode "Cat and Mouse" in Season 2, as well as the Bad Batch arc of Season 7. He is the archenemy of Wullf Yularen.

He is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who also voices all the clones and Robonino in the same series, Admiral Kassius Konstantine in Star Wars: Rebels, Crosshair in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Klaus Heissler in American Dad!, and Bubble Bass in SpongeBob SquarePants.

Biography[]

Past[]

A Harch originally from the planet Secundus Ando, Admiral Trench's early life is entirely unknown. Ten years before the Clone Wars had began, Trench was a mercenary who was hired by the Corporate Alliance and served as a military commander for their naval forces where he attacked numerous pirate settlements at Ord Namurt, Engira, and seized the Kurosti Merchant Fleet during a daring raid at Propsera Jang. An unrelenting veteran and skilled military commander, Trench was feared by many and waged a strong campaign against the Galactic Republic and survived numerous deaths throughout his military career.

In 34 BBY, Trench became the mastermind of the Battle of Malastare Narrows where he would make military history. The Corporate Alliance had blockaded Malastare to force the planet to negotiate over fuel allocations and Trench was given command over the fleet. At one time in his military career, he fought in the Battle of Malastare Narrows. Trench and his fleet tore each ship apart until the Jedi Task Force arrived with Wullf Yularen being was one of the few survivors of the battle. It would only be through the intervention of a Jedi lead task-force that the Corporate Alliance blockade was ended. The Jedi defeated Trench's forces by destroying the Admiral's flagship while Trench was believed to be onboard. However, the Harch naval genius in fact survived to reappear during the Separatist blockade over Christophsis.

Clone Wars[]

After the initial victory over the forces of Whorm Loathsom and the Retail Caucus, the Republic launch a relief effort for the people of Christophsis. The mission to help the Christophsians is led by Bail Organa, the Senator representing Alderaan but the planet falls under attack from Admiral Trench and his forces. Trench's first priority is to cut off any supplies to the relief effort on the planet below, commanding his fleet from his very own war-painted Providence-class destroyer, the massive fire power of his cruiser allowing the Admiral to cripple any attempt by incoming supply ships to get to the surface. Such an attempt is made by Anakin Skywalker and his cruisers but the Jedi are met with suppressive fire from Trench's destroyer and are forced to retreat behind the moon of Christophsis.

While the Jedi retreat and regroup, Trench feel he had won the round and orders his troops not to follow the enemy, but to recycle their shields and allow the cannons to recharge to full power. The Admiral, satisfied with the proceedings, sits back in his seat at the bridge and calmly awaits for the return of the enemy ships. The Republic's counter-attack eventually comes in the form of a Stealth ship, piloted by Anakin Skywalker himself and Admiral Yularen. Not knowing of the cloaked ship, Trench becomes impatient and ordered a number of Hyena-class bombers to attack the surface, particularly the command center of Bail Organa. The bombing is planned by Trench to draw out the hiding Republic "cowards", as he puts it. Although the stealth ship is undetected by the Admiral, Trench suspects that there is something odd going on. His suspicions prove correct, when Anakin's ship presents itself and fires its torpedoes at Trench's cruiser. Unfortunately, the maneuver has little effect and Admiral Trench reacts quickly and raises his ship's thermal shields.

Angered by this act of foolishness, Trench responds by firing his own torpedoes at the stealth ship but Skywalker manages to evade the torpedoes by shooting flares so the furious Trench fires a spread of lasers, to no avail. Seeing how the short skirmish played out, Trench is now sure that they are not dealing with near clone pilots but with a Jedi so he patches a transmission on the comlink channel, so that he can present himself to his adversaries and threaten them to retreat; ending the transmission with a warning that he will be their doom. Trench prepares himself for the Jedi's second offensive, as he knows they will. Eventually, the cloaked vessel reveals itself, but this time they have knowledge of Trench's tactics with ship cloaking devices. Trench tracks the magnetic signatures of ships so he can follow and destroy them. The Stealth ship opens fire upon Trench's flagship, the attack itself is only a diversion and Anakin's ship again cloaks itself. Trench then locks onto the ship's magnetic signature and orders his Tactical droid to fire a torpedo at the source of the signature on his command. He is forced to lower his shields to do so; his droid advising against the move but, in a moment of compulsive anger, Trench orders to fire and the torpedoes are launched.

However, this has been the moment Skywalker was waiting for: the stealth ship, with torpedoes on its tail, turns around and heads towards the bridge of Trench's command ship. Surprised by the bold attack, the Admiral orders the shields to be raised back up but the shields aren't recharged to full power and the ship is left defenseless. Trench is caught off guard and, now seeing the Republic ship speeding towards him, the Admiral doesn't know what to do and how to react. Accepting his defeat, he closes his six eyes and awaits his demise. The Stealth ship flies right over and the torpedoes slam straight into the bridge, destroying Trench's flagship, and bringing chaos to the blockade. At that crucial moment, one of the most successful Confederate fleet Admirals loses for the Separatist cause. However, Admiral Trench somehow manages to survive this although it causes severe damage to his body. As such, he had to get cybernetic replacements for one of his eyes, parts of his flesh, a tusk and several of his arms/legs before he can re-enter battle.

Two years later, Trench watches the Battle of Ringo Vinda from the command center as the Republic continues to gain ground. However, Tup relapses into his strange feeling, and becomes extremely focused on Tiplar. Before the Jedi Master can figure out what is happening, Tup shoots her at point-blank range. Fives quickly tackles Tup, but Tiplar's death coupled with droid reinforcements causes the Republic to lose their advantage, and they are forced to retreat. After replaying the events of the battle, Trench contacts Count Dooku to tell him of Tup's erratic action. Trench, however, knows that Tup was not acting in free will, like one clone had done before. Dooku is very concerned, as this means that one of his Master's plans is going wrong. He contacts Sidious, who tells him to apprehend Tup immediately.

During the final months of the Clone Wars, Admiral Trench orders an assault on Anaxes and sends more troops to deal with the clone infiltrators. He attempts to exit the command bridge but is blocked by Anakin, who strikes down his tactical droid and several BX-series droid commandos with his lightsaber. Anakin then demands that Trench reveal the final number in the sequence to disarm the bomb, but the Admiral only taunts him. In response, Skywalker severs his left set of cyborg arms and reiterates his demand. Trench complies and Anakin reveals the final number to Windu who is then able to disarm the bomb. However, Trench attacks Skywalker with his cane he had in his organic right set of arms but the Jedi impales him with his lightsaber. This time, there is no coming back from the dead for Admiral Trench who slumps over dead and his body is destroyed when his ship implodes shortly after.

Personality[]

Despite being a sadistic commander, Admiral Trench was a brilliant minded and cunning general who usually found ways to destroy his enemies. Despite his usually calm and confident attitude, he had a hot temper and would lash out without thinking rationally when openly taunted which was his undoing.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Durability: Admiral Trench was extremely hard to kill, surviving at least two ship explosions (with one also having him be on the ship's bridge) and only needing mechanical enhancements on the second occasion. It took impaling him on Anakin's lightsaber to kill him for good.
  • Master Strategist: Trench was a master strategist, being able to devastate entire Republic navies and kill hundreds with his brutally effective battle strategies.
  • Balance: Trench was able to remain upright and was unfazed when his bridge lurched after the Stealth Corvette's missiles struck his shields.

Weaknesses[]

  • Temper: Although he usually had a calculated and supremely confident attitude, Admiral Trench had a powerful temper that would cause him to ignore helpful criticsm and make hasty decisions.

Arsenal[]

  • Cane: Admiral Trench was always seen wielding a cane although, when he originally appeared, this was only used to better coordinate battles.
    • Electric Shocks: After becoming a cyborg, Trench's cane had an electrifying tip; similarly to a MagnaGuards' electrostaff.

Quotes[]

*clicking* Fire all forward cannons. Cut off those Republic supply ships. Separate them from their escort cruisers. I smell fear. *clicking* And it smells good.
~ Admiral Trench's first words as he attacked Anakin Skywalker and Admiral Wullf Yularen's flagship.
No! *clicking* Our orders are to blockade, not chase! *clicking* I have won this round. Recycle the shields and let the cannons reset to a full charge. And the enemy will soon return. And when they do, *clicking*, we shall be ready.
~ Trench as the Republic forces retreated.
There! A cloaked ship. Activate the shields. Foolish Republic scum! Your puny torpedoes are no match for my thermo shields! Prepare to fire all cannons! Fire! Fire a spread of lasers!
~ Trench when Anakin's IPV-2C Stealth Corvette decloaked.
I am Admiral Trench. *clicking* If you are listening, Jedi, you've made a bold move and a grave mistake. I appreciate your decision to face me, ship to ship, to play this little... game. *clicking* It's been so long since I had a worthy opponent. You... have an impressive new vessel but I warn you. I have dealt with its kind before. Your technology will not save you and your friends on the planet below will perish as a result of your failure. The people of Christophsis and her resources shall join the Separatist Alliance. Turn back now, retreat while you can or I am your doom.
~ Trench's message to Anakin and Yularen.
He cannot! Raise the shields!
~ Trench when he realized he had been tricked and his apparent last words.
You're a Jedi. Your nobility-
~ Admiral Trench when Anakin demanded the deactivation codes and his last on-screen words.
