Balmy Highlands is the first area in Pikmin: Wide World, being the first place Olimar decides to land the Dolphin Lander with Shacho in tow. It is a luxuriant, grassy field with patches of dirt scattered about and stones embedded into the ground, though one part of the area is remarkably devoid of vegetation. A few medium to large ponds of clear water dot the landscape, and a large, deep body of water in one part of the area serves as a lake. Additionally, parts of the landscape appear to be the remains of a building, most likely a house.
Balmy Highlands is persistently sunny with a gentle cool breeze, giving it comfortable warmth, though there is occasional cloud cover and rain that slightly reduces the area's usual temperature.
Unlike any of the other 5 areas, Balmy Highlands lacks a major boss, but there is a secret boss that can be accessed after getting Winged Pikmin, which is also around the limited time Alien Pikmin can be discovered.
Plot
Although the Dolphin Lander managed to enter the planet's atmosphere without colliding with a stray asteroid, the landing itself was not without incident; still unfamiliar with his new spacecraft, Olimar accidentally ejected Shacho from it. Shacho landed in a place where he was isolated from Olimar but miraculously with the Yellow Pikmin and their Onion, and the two Hocotatians could give and trade them to one another as needed. With a bit of work and some bomb rocks to use on the crystal gate between them, Olimar and Shacho were reunited.
After their eventful first day on PNF-404, Olimar and Shacho return to Balmy Highlands, having nowhere else to go. After withdrawing the Yellow Pikmin from their Onion, the duo explores more of Balmy Highlands and may even stumble upon their first of many caves, this particular one being a den. After exiting it, they may choose to keep looking around or to retire for the day. No matter what Olimar and Shacho decide to do, while in orbit after the end of the day, they discuss their latest foray into PNF-404 and discover Arid Oasis.
