~ Bass |
Bass (known as フォルテ, Forte in Japanese) is the secondary antagonist of the classic Mega Man series.
Created by Dr. Wily to be a superior Robot Master in the same vein of design as Mega Man, he will do anything to complete his programmed objective. Unfortunately for Dr. Wily, this includes terminating any other robots that threaten to accomplish his goal before him.
He has been voiced by Koji Tobe (1995-1996), Nobuyuki Hiyama (1996, 1997-2012), and from 2021-onwards, he is currently voiced by Keiko Nemoto. In the English dub of Mega Man 8, he is voiced by Darryl Stogre.
Biography[]
Mega Man 7[]
After being defeated so many times by Mega Man, Dr. Wily studied Mega Man's blueprints, in hopes of creating a similar robot. During his research, he accidentally developed a powerful energy source that he called "Bassnium". With this new energy, he was able to develop Bass.
Believing that someday he might get arrested, Wily programmed Bass and other robots to look for him in case he went missing for too long. After Wily remains in jail for three months, Bass wakes up and starts looking for Wily, releasing him from the prison with little effort. As Mega Man gives chase to Wily, he meets with Bass, and the two have a brief fight. Bass deceives Mega Man, making him believe he was an ally.
Later on, Mega Man finds Bass again, seemingly wounded. Mega Man invites him to go to Dr. Light's lab for repairs. Once in the lab, Dr. Light repairs him and makes some enhancements on him. As a way of thanks, Bass blows up the lab, revealing his true intentions. Wily mocks Mega Man for being too naive, since Bass was his creation all along. Mega Man goes after Wily in his new Skull Castle, finding Bass again. Mega Man defeats him, but he simply retreats. He finds Bass once again, but this time Bass fuses with his pet robot Treble, so Mega Man fuses with Rush for an even fight, defeating Bass once again. Later on, after Mega Man defeats Dr. Wily, Bass appears and rescues Wily.
Mega Man 8[]
Bass is seen fighting Mega Man at the beginning of the game. When asked why he is fighting Mega Man, Bass responds by attempting to shoot Mega Man. This leads to Mega Man hitting him into an elevator shaft where he is tied up with steel cables. Roll interrupts the battle, and Mega Man leaves to take care of some things. Bass escapes from the cables by shooting them, and prepares for his next fight.
Bass shows up in the 3rd level of the Wily Tower, where he fights Mega Man. He uses the Evil Energy to make his attacks stronger and allow him to use his Treble Boost. He has no weaknesses in this fight. Mega Man defeats Bass, and Bass vows to defeat Mega Man before teleporting away.
Mega Man Battle & Chase[]
In Mega Man Battle & Chase, Bass appears as one of the ten playable characters. His vehicle is the Treble Darkstar which is a balanced machine using his attacks like the Bass Buster and Bass Blast. He entered the competition to compete against his Mega Man. If the player doesn't play as him on Grand Prix mode, he/she will face him as the second-to-last opponent before his creator.
If the player wins as him, he is not satisfied about defeating Mega Man since it only a race and wants the latter defeated in a real battle. In the original Japanese version, Wily contacts him to demands the bounty money, though the former ignores the latter and leaves it on the beach.
Mega Man & Bass[]
Bass starts distrusting Wily, rebelling against him and deciding to defeat Mega Man by himself. Although he had many attempts, he never managed to defeat Mega Man. Wily then starts doubting Bass's abilities, so he creates a powerful robot named King in order to test Bass. However, King rebels against him, starting a war of his own. Disgusted, Bass goes after King just to prove himself, getting really mad when he discovers that it was Wily who created King. He goes after Wily and defeats him, so Wily reveals his plans, also revealing that he had a plan for a new King. But, before he had a chance to show him, Proto Man appears and destroys the computer with the plans. Wily demands that Bass attacks Proto Man, but he refuses to obey, saying that he doesn't take orders from anyone.
He also appears as a CD in Astro Man's stage.
Rockman & Forte: Mirai Kara no Chosensha[]
When a group of futuristic robots calling themselves the Dimensions, led by Mega Man's dark form Rockman Shadow, attack Symphony City. Wily sends Bass to investigate, as their base is nearby. He then teams up with Mega Man, who had also been sent on an investigation by Dr. Light.
After Bass defeats the Grey Devil at Rockman Shadow's robot factory, the latter tells Bass that he will tell him who he is once he defeats his men. Bass defeats Dimensions, who reveals that Rockman Shadow is another robot like Quint that Wily created when he traveled to the future. Rockman Shadow offers Bass the chance to join them in defeating the real Mega Man together and ultimately making him the strongest robot but he refuses the offer as he does not want to be ordered around by someone who resembles Mega Man and wants to do what he wants, which includes destroying Rockman Shadow. The two fight and Bass defeats the dark Mega Man. As he dies, Rockman Shadow tells him and Mega Man that he was an abandoned prototype of Quint, and that in the future he upgraded himself to become stronger and destroy the world. Since there's nothing to stop him in the future, he goes back to the past to find someone who can defeat him.
Rockman Shadow tells him that finding strength is no way for a robot to live, due to even if Bass defeats his enemies, others will always appear until he eventually dies like him. Bass admits it was a good lesson, and he and his rival Mega Man bury Rockman Shadow. After all, Bass tells the latter that he will save him for now, but never to forget that he (Bass) is the strongest robot alive.
In the credits, he is seen taking a nap with Treble, and in one final shot with Treble, Reggae, Rockman Shadow, Mega Man, and his family.
