“ | What it's saying is scaring me. It's better you don't know. Stop saying those scary things! It looks like Mimikyu hates Pikachu. Mimikyu isn't dressed as Pikachu just for fun. It seems to be the thing Mimikyu hates most. That is enough! I'm scared. You don't have to say anymore. |

~ Meowth about Mimikyu. |
Mimikyu (spelled Mimikkyu in Japanese) is formerly one of Jessie's and the Team Rocket Trio's main Pokémon, and is a major antagonist of the Alola Region arc in the Pokémon anime.
It is currently voiced by Billy Bob Thompson in the few moments that it "talks".
Appearance[]
Mimikyu has a rag over itself so that it can hide its true appearance. The reason for this other than hiding its actual appearance is also to show its hatred and wrathfulness against all things related to Pikachu. Similarly to the actual Pikachu, it has red/orange cheeks painted on the cloth, a black mouth that looks slightly distorted, two black eyes, and two ears.
Nothing is confirmed about how it looks behind the cloth other than that it apparently can cause people to die, or at the very least cause a terrifying traumatic nightmare experience after looking at it in its true form as seen with Meowth, and that it has a black claw and tail that it uses in battle.
Personality[]
Jessie's Mimikyu is a lot different than what the video games present, as they mention that Mimikyu is a tragic and sad creature that pretends to be a Pikachu only because it wants to be as popular and make friends. Due to the fact that if someone looks under the rag, the person dies.
Jessie's Mimikyu is very different; it is extremely destructive, ruthless, and vicious. Whenever it sees a Pikachu, it will attack it almost instantly, and while all Pikachu are its main enemies, it won't hesitate to attack others too, as it once attacked Lana's Popplio during a Pancake race contest for no apparent reason, and once attempted to murder Meowth. Mimikyu spends a lot of time outside his Poké Ball despite it being a luxury one and mainly wanders around, it will often ignore Jessie's orders unless the target Pokemon is Pikachu.
Following the episode Mimikyu Unmasked, Mimikyu develops some form of partnership with Jessie after the latter fixes its torn rag. Furthermore, despite hating Pikachu, it seems that Mimikyu still wants to dress up as Pikachu and was upset upon seeing two children adore a giant Pikachu float. Occasionally, Mimikyu will demonstrate some care towards its allies, such as when it defeated the Alolan Raticate after the others were injured. We also see Mimikyu become a little more interactive, as he assists Team Rocket in selling donuts.
According to Meowth, who can understand Pokémon speech, Mimikyu is very intimidating and cruel when it talks, and was extremely disturbed by the words it used to the point where he didn't want to repeat or explain what it said. Mimikyu appears to love scaring Meowth due to the fact that he's very much afraid of him.
One can easily indicate that Mimikyu feels angered whenever Bewear carries it and Team Rocket away, due to him being either close to defeating Pikachu, or not even touching him at all. Although during one circumstance, Mimikyu was able to stop Bewear and make her wait.
Near the end of the series however, Mimikyu attempts to defeat Pikachu one last time but ends up seeing its own hidden appearance in the ocean's reflection. After Pikachu runs into the sea to save it with help from Ash, Mimikyu loses the will to fight and leaves. Meowth later advises Mimikyu to carry on with life and not let his hatred continue to drive him. Mimikyu appeared to have taken this advice and was later seen playing happily with Maraenie and Stufful.
History[]
First meeting with Team Rocket[]
Mimikyu was encountered by Team Rocket in the Alola Region in the third episode of the Sun and Moon arc "Loading the Dex!". At first, Jessie and James think that Mimikyu is an actual Pikachu, and this amazes them and encourages them to catch it. Jessie later notices that it isn't actually a Pikachu, nevertheless she still wants it, and after realizing that Mimikyu dresses up like Pikachu because of its hatred of it, Jessie decides to catch it.
Mimikyu doesn't want to be caught and the only thing it wants is death to all Pikachus, and after Team Rocket confronts Ash and Pikachu, Mimikyu attacks Pikachu without a second thought and dominates it. He defeats all of Ash's Pokémon, and this amazes Team Rocket even more and makes them even more encouraged to catch it.
Jessie tries using multiple Poke-Balls to catch it, but to no avail. She then snags James's limited edition Luxury Ball and successfully catches Mimikyu with it. Since then, Mimikyu has been Jessie's main battling Pokemon in Alola.
A Team-on-Team Tussle![]
In this episode, Jessie and James are fighting against an Alolan Raticate in order to obtain the Darkinium Z, and while every Pokémon is failing at defeating the Raticate, Mimikyu is the challenge hard even for it to defeat, The Totem Raticate manages to slap Mimikyu away with its tail and it is about to defeat Team Rocket, when Mimikyu comes out of nowhere and attacks Raticate, which made Team Rocket win.
Mimikyu Unmasked![]
In this episode, Mimikyu is less dominant in battle, and Team Rocket is once again out seeking to get Pikachu.
It doesn't take much time before Kiawe uses his Turtonator and Firium Z, and it quickly tears the whole Team Rocket team apart and separates the Pokémon from Jessie and James, dragging Mimikyu rag away, which forces him to take a malasada bag on himself instead. Jessie went to buy another rag for him after it.
Later in the episode, even though having a growing relationship with Jessie, it still denied her order on attacking Ash's Lycanroc, and attacked Pikachu instead.
A Battle Hand-Off![]
When Ash went to kahuna Nanu for his island challenge, Nanu didn't want to bother with a match and instead sent Ash to the abandoned Thrifty Megamart, calling it a pre-trial test. He had previously sent Team Rocket there in order to manipulate them into fighting.
Bewear intervened in the battle, but Mimikyu managed to talk her into letting it finish the fight. Mimikyu came close to winning by using its Z-Move, Let's Snuggle Forever, but Pikachu was able to withstand the attack by using the move Electro Web as a shield to defend itself, and then came back with its own exclusive Z-Move 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt, making Mimikyu faint. Afterwards, Bewear took them all home again.
Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues[]
In the finale of Sun and Moon, Jessie and James receive the order to return to Team Rocket HQ. Knowing that their Pokémon will be forced into a different lifestyle which they won't enjoy if they go back to Kanto, Jessie and James choose to release Mimikyu and Mareanie back into the wild instead. Mimikyu went to live as a wild Pokémon alongside Bewear, Mareanie, and Stufful, living in the hollow tree that held Team Rocket's old base.
Mimikyu went to have one final battle with Ash's Pikachu before Team Rocket's departure. It fell to its own madness after being thrown out over the sea and seeing its own reflection in the water. Pikachu saved Mimikyu from drowning. Afterward, Mimikyu became despondent for a time, having not only lost and needed to be saved by its rival, but all due to its own cursed appearance which it hated. After receiving a talk from Meowth, Mimikyu seemed to finally come to terms with who it really was.
Mimikyu and Team Rocket were reunited again in Pokémon Journeys, in the episode "All Out, All The Time!", but they went their separate ways again after that episode.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Intelligence: Mimikyu seems to be more intelligent than average Pokémon. It can create plans and use complex battle strategies all on its own without the need for a trainer, though it still requires a trainer in order to use Z-Moves.
- Ghost/Fairy Typing: As a ghost and fairy type, Mimikyu is completely immune to normal, fighting, and dragon type attacks, and resistant to bug type attacks, but takes double damage from ghost, poison and steel type attacks.
- Disguise: Mimikyu's disguise allows it to ignore one attack per battle, by having the disguise suffer damage and break in its place.
- Madness Inducement: Anyone who sees Mimikyu's true body beneath its disguise passes out on the spot, falling into a deep sleep filled with nightmares. A victim of this ability is unable to wake up on their own and will die if not woken up by someone else, a fate which apparently befell a pokémon researcher that was attempting to study Mimikyu in the wild.
Moveset
- Shadow Ball: Mimikyu charges and fires a ball of shadows to attack.
- Shadow Claw: A shadowy hand appears from under Mimikyu's disguise and slashes the enemy with its claws.
- Wood Hammer: Mimikyu wraps its stick in shadows and bludgeons the enemy with it. This can also be used to deflect ranged attacks such as Pikachu's Electro Ball.
- Play Rough: Mimikyu dives toward the enemy and beats them up while surrounded in a cloud of dust.
- Let's Snuggle Forever: Mimimkyu's Z-Move requires it to use Play Rough while Jessie is posing and channeling energy through the Z-Ring with Mimikium Z inserted. Mimikyu's disguise expands and envelops the opponent. Mimikyu then proceeds to beat them down with a greatly powered up version of Play Rough. If Jessie continues to hold the pose without moving, Mimikyu can remain powered up and keep the victim trapped without hope of escape.
Trivia[]
- Unlike a majority of Jessie's Pokémon (from a comedic point of view), Mimikyu proves to be in contrast; a very dark and dangerous villain who has attempted to brutally batter and even kill Pikachu for its own deep hatred of the Pokémon. Furthermore, Mimikyu also had a habit of scaring Meowth with its true appearance and enjoying it.
- After being saved by Pikachu however, Mimikyu appears to have lost this hatred and in turn comes to accept itself with help from Meowth.
- Mimikyu holds the record of being the smallest Pokémon villain at a mere height of 0'08" (0.02 m) tall and a weight of 1.5 lbs (0.7 kg).
- Ever since the episode "The Sun, the Scare, the Secret Lair!", It can be reasonably considered that Mimikyu has a hatred for Bewear, as she took Mimikyu and Team Rocket away right before it could defeat Pikachu.
- In "A Battle Hand-Off!" Mimikyu prevents this from happening again by telling her to wait and watch the battle.
