Villain Overview

Let me ask you, what have the governments, religions and people of this world accomplished? Up until now, people have lived in fear of those with power, and were ruled by an iron fist. Who could possibly save such a twisted world? I wanted the two of us to clash and destroy each other. Then, I could finally be free of this accursed blood in my veins, and the world would be saved. But there would be only one chance.
~ Jin Kazama

Jin Kazama is the main protagonist of the Tekken franchise. He is the son of Kazuya and Jun Kazama, who seeks to end the curse of the Devil by destroying his own bloodline.

Despite usually being depicted as an anti-hero, Jin's betrayal at the hands of his grandfather, Heihachi, and repeated battles against Kazuya cause him to grow increasingly misanthropic and distrustful of others. This culminates in Jin taking over the Mishima Zaibatsu and starting a global war against G Corporation in Tekken 6, all so he can awaken and defeat the demon Azazel in a desperate gambit to end the Mishima Family feud forever.

In Japanese, he has been voiced by Isshin Chiba in all video game appearances and Minami Takayama in Tekken: The Motion Picture. In English, he was voiced by Jacob Franchek in Tekken: The Motion Picture, Patrick Seitz in Tekken: Blood Vengeance, Brad Swaile in Street Fighter X Tekken, and Kaiji Tang in Tekken: Bloodline.

Personality[]

The Mishima bloodline ends here./I will put an end to the Mishima clan's curse!
(三島の血は、俺が絶つ!/三島の宿命は、俺が絶つ! Mishima no chi wa, ore ga tatsu!/Mishima no shukumei wa, ore ga tatsu!)
~ Jin's determination.

Jin's actions and surroundings fit the mold of a quintessential "tragic hero", excluding the lack of a tragic flaw as of Tekken 6. As with many tragedies, all of the major traumatic events that occur within the hero's life are beyond his control: his grandfather and father are two of the most malicious and ruthless individuals who have ever lived on the face of the earth. Also, his mother was cruelly and abruptly taken from him, while he was fifteen.

Jin has a very complex personality. He has the kindness of his mother, Jun Kazama and his grandmother, Kazumi Mishima. Likewise, he has the fighting spirit and determination of his half-uncle, Lars and his great grandfather, as well as a hidden and silent personal to his legal nephew Lee Chaolan, Jinpachi Mishima. He also has the anger of his father, Kazuya Mishima and his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima.

In the events of Tekken 6, Jin uses his new position as the CEO of the Mishima Zaibatsu to throw the world into war in hopes of a cure, although his intentions are entirely benevolent, since he seeks to use this to awaken and then destroy a much greater threat, Azazel. Believing that defeating this monster could help get rid of his curse, Jin might have destroyed countless people's property, ruined many lives and won lots of enemies through his actions. This may mean that Jin (no matter how painful it is for him) is willing to go out of his morals if that is what it takes to save the world. This again shows that no matter how indifferent and arrogant Jin seems to be, he is still a good man.

Biography[]

Tekken 3[]

Born under Kazuya Mishima and Jun Kazama, Jin was raised in a secluded area by only his mother, thereby developing such a great fondness towards her. He also learned the Kazama Style Martial Arts from her. He has a rival named Hwoarang.

On his fifteenth birthday, however, the ancient Fighting God Ogre arrived, and attacked Jun. Jin was swiftly defeated while attempting to protect his mother, and when he woke up, Jun was nowhere to be seen, along with Ogre. Thinking that his mother was murdered, Jin swore revenge. As Jun told him, if anything happened to her, he should seek aid to his grandfather Heihachi Mishima, so he did. Heihachi took him in and trained him the Mishima Style Karate and had him enrolled in the Mishima high school where he would be acquainted with Ling Xiaoyu. Later, in order to lure Ogre, Heihachi opened the third King of Iron Fist Tournament, which Jin participated.

The one who advanced to the final and defeated Ogre, however, was instead Paul Phoenix. However, when Paul left, feeling victorious, Ogre revealed its true, beastly form, True Ogre, in which Jin stepped in and defeated it, avenging his mother. However, in that very moment of victory, he was suddenly shot and betrayed by none other than Heihachi, who saw him already outliving his usefulness to lure Ogre in. In that moment, Jin's Devil Gene awakened, angered by the betrayal and proceeded to swipe down Heihachi and his Tekken Force before retreating.

Tekken 4[]

After regaining his senses, Jin started to loathe his Mishima bloodline. Discarding what he learned from Heihachi, he trained in the arts of Traditional Karate, mixing it with the Kazama style Martial Arts, while hiding in Brisbane, Australia. At the same time, he sent a message to his closest friend Xiaoyu to be aware of the Zaibatsu.

Two years after the tournament, Jin learned that his father, Kazuya, has returned from the dead and the fourth King of Iron Fist Tournament is underway. Sensing a chance to destroy his father and grandfather, Jin participated. But before he could fight against Kazuya in the semi-finals, he was ambushed by the Tekken Force and captured, locked inside Honmaru.

After a while of fighting the demons inside him along with the urges from his father to give in to his Devil powers, Jin woke up, broke from the chains tying him and proceeded to defeat both Kazuya and Heihachi. He was ready to finally kill them both, but the spirit of Jun appeared before the blow was dealt. In honor of his mother, Jin spared the two and flew away.

Tekken 5[]

Jin flew away, but he was unconscious at the same time. When he did awake, he noticed that his surroundings were completely ruined. When he returned home to Yakushima, he was haunted with nightmares about his Devil Gene. Unsure with how long he could hold out, Jin decided to embark on a journey to vanquish the evil within him.

Later, the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament is announced. Jin participated and eventually found out that it was sponsored by his great-grandfather, Jinpachi Mishima. Jin defeated him and his Devil form, and inherited the Mishima Zaibatsu as a reward.

Tekken 6[]

Xiaoyu: Jin. Why did you do all of this?! Tell me what's going on.
Jin: I'm just returning everything back to the way it should be.
Xiaoyu: No, you're not! This isn't the right way, Jin. Why can't you see that?
Jin: That's of no concern to you.
Xiaoyu: I'm gonna stop you, Jin. I'm gonna make you see the truth!
~ Xiaoyu realizing that Jin had betrayed her in her Scenario Campaign.

Upon taking over the Zaibatsu, Jin's personality changed. Like his father and grandfather, he became a ruthless leader and plunged the world into a warzone, declaring war on all nations that opposed him. Despite his well-indented claims, Jin ended up becoming worse than Kazuya and Heihachi ever were. Noticing that everyone now wanted a piece of him for his atrocities, Jin opened the sixth King of Iron Fist Tournament.

At the end of the Scenario Campaign, Jin's true nature was revealed. The reason why he plunged the world into utter chaos was to gather enough negative energy to bring forth the creature known as Azazel the one who generated the Devil Gene in the first place. Jin's theory is that if he killed Azazel, the Devil Gene would be no more, he would free both himself and the world from the accursed gene. He ends up pushing both himself and Azazel into oblivion, possibly killing themselves.

However, when Raven investigated the place where this took place in the near future, he found Jin's body, still with his Devil's mark, indicating that he may have survived the ordeal.

Tekken 7[]

While extracted by Zaibatsu's helicopter, Jin's uncontrollable power caused the helicopter to explode and report of him being missing. He survived from the explosion and barely walked when he is weakened until he was ambushed by the Zaibatsu soldiers who were ordered by his grandfather, Heihachi until Lars arrived and rescued him. After the world went to chaos, Jin fully recovered and prepared to go and kill his father, Kazuya to end the Mishima bloodline once and for all.

Tekken 8[]

My devil power appeared when I faced death in the heat of battle. If I am to resurrect that power, I must walk the path of carnage once again. I'll get my power back. And when I do... I'll kill that bastard. Even if I have to go down with him.
~ Jin about ending Kazuya and bringing back the Devil Gene in Tekken 8.

Jin returns as the main protagonist of Tekken 8. After the true death of his grandfather Heihachi Mishima, he will fight his father, Kazuya Mishima once more. As he is no longer alone anymore, Jin receives aids from more than just his two uncles, Lars and Lee.

Under Lars's command, Jin began preparing for Operation Lightning, a strike intended to eliminate Kazuya.

Operation Lightning commenced in New York City. Jin confronted Kazuya, and the two fought using the power of their Devil Genes. However, Jin failed to maintain control over his devil form; he transformed completely and ultimately lost to Kazuya. Unconscious under rubble in the city, Jin had a vision of his devil form extending a hand to him, but he rejected its offer of assistance as he thought that doing so would make him no better than his father (who had merged his mind with that of his own devil form). Alisa rescued Jin from the rubble.

One week later, Jin was recuperating at an Yggdrasil base. He and Lars sparred, only for Lee to interrupt and share the troubling news that Jin's strength and abilities had diminished. At Lars's request, Jin attempted to call upon his devil powers, but found himself unable to access them. Three days later, Jin almost collapsed whilst training. Alisa went to his aid. Jin thanked her for saving him and she told Jin that he was the hope of mankind. Based on past experiences, Jin came to believe that he would regain his ability to use his devil powers if he was put at risk of death, and told Lars and Lee of his intention to enter the eighth King of Iron Fist Tournament. Lars was concerned that the tournament was a trap set by G Corporation, but Jin resolved to enter regardless. Jin believed that he needed to defeat Kazuya even at the cost of his own life.

Three days later, Jin was present at the arena for the tournament's Asia Preliminaries. There, he encountered a young woman called Reina, who told him she attended Mishima Polytechnic just as he once had. Jin ignored her in this instance, but was matched against her in the semifinals. As they fought, Jin realized she was using Mishima Style Fighting Karate like his late grandfather, Heihachi. After Reina landed a blow on him, Jin's devil powers briefly reawakened, seemingly in response to the risk of death he associated with Heihachi's style. After this, Reina suddenly forfeited the match. Hwoarang then entered the ring despite not being scheduled to fight Jin next. The two fought, and Jin felt a heat within his body that he had previously forgotten. His devil powers awoke in response to it, and he was able to defeat Hwoarang. Jin was unsure why he did not lose himself to his devil powers in this instance. Hwoarang remarked on Jin's 'weird power', but then noted that it was 'just another part' of Jin.

When Niklas and Leo Kliesen arrived at Yggdrasil's base to discuss findings about the Devil Gene with Yggdrasil's leadership, Leo recognized Jin as the one who waged war as head of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Leo asked to spar, and Jin obliged. Later, Niklas explained that devils were humans that possessed a fraction of Azazel's power. These devils were able to access their superhuman powers by drawing upon their desire. Lars hypothesized that Kazuya's power came from his avarice, but Leo told Jin that they did not sense any selfish emotions in him whilst they were sparring, only warmth.

Jin attended the next stage of the King of Iron Fist Tournament, which was held in a coliseum in Italy. There, he faced Leroy Smith, who impressed upon him the importance of fighting from the heart rather than relying on physical strength alone. Jin defeated Leroy, and then Kazuya emerged. Yggdrasil and the United Nations' forces stormed the arena, having combined their strength in order to take out Kazuya. Xiaoyu, Claudio Serafino, and Zafina, who now had Azazel's spirit sealed within her, also entered the arena. In the chaos, Kazuya assumed his devil form and captured Zafina, using his power to expel Azazel from her. Jin caught Zafina as she fell. Wounded, Zafina told Jin that he needed to return to the 'point of origin' to purge himself of evil. Jin realized he must go to his birthplace, Yakushima. Meanwhile, Kazuya absorbed Azazel's power and took on a more powerful monstrous form. Claudio told Jin that any attempt to combat Kazuya in this form would fail at this time, and told him to do as Zafina said. One of the fighters present at the tournament, Emilie De Rochefort, offered to take Jin to Yakushima on her private jet. Jin left for Yakushima with Xiaoyu accompanying him.

Once they arrived on Yakushima, Jin and Xiaoyu traveled to the shrine where Jin and his mother once trained together. Xiaoyu asked Jin what he wanted to be when he grew up, and he told her he never desired anything beyond protecting his mother and their home. They reached a clearing and Xiaoyu suggested that they spar to see if it would help Jin discover what he needed to do. After they fought, Jin heard a lullaby from his childhood. He followed the sound of it into the opening of a sanctum. His body faltered, and he promised Xiaoyu he would return before falling unconscious. Xiaoyu watched over him and fought off waves of Jack-7 robots to protect him while he was vulnerable. Lars also traveled to the sanctum to assist, and fought Kazuya when he reached the area.

Meanwhile, Jin faced his devil form on a plane of his subconscious. His devil form taunted him, telling him that power derived from anger and hatred was essential, and that Jin could atone for his past actions only through solitude. Jin rejected these ideas, stating that awareness of his past mistakes was what would allow him to move forward. Jin then encountered his devil form as a mirror image of himself. Jin resolved that he was done rejecting his devil form as an innate part of himself, acknowledging that he could only move on if he accepted all he was and all he had done. Devil Jin asked him what it was he truly desired, and Jin stated that he was determined to protect those precious to him. His devil form granted him all of its power, and Jin realized that it had made efforts to protect him in the past. He thanked it, and apologized for misunderstanding its intentions previously.

Jin awoke in time to save Lars from the path of one of Kazuya's lasers. In his newly regained devil form, Jin fought Kazuya. Jin was able to hold his own against Kazuya, but eventually found himself struggling to hold back a massive attack that Kazuya intended to destroy Yakushima with. As he attempted to hold the attack off, Jin had a vision of his mother, Jun. She told him that a noble death would cause pain to those around him. She reminded him that the Kazama way was to protect the well-being of those around him and himself. Jin asked his mother if he had the right to desire life after all he had done. She reminded him that a Kazama's power was to foster life and cleanse evil. Jin assumed a new form, Angel Jin. Jun told him he could use his power to save himself and his father.

In his new form, Jin was able to redirect Kazuya's attack to the ocean, saving Yakushima. Angel Jin and Devil Kazuya fought, and through this fight, both Jin and Kazuya were purified of their Devil Genes. With their devil powers gone, they continued their fight. Jin was able to use all his teachings from his mother's Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts to the Mishima Style Fighting Karate he once rejected to defeat Kazuya due to determination to protect those he cared about, and his fresh resolve to live. After besting Kazuya in their battle, Jin left Kazuya unconscious and went to regroup with his loved ones. He believed the world to finally have been freed from the influence of devils and their powers. Jin then went on to go traveling with Xiaoyu. However, Reina, who is revealed to be Heihachi's daughter, is shown to have the Devil Gene at the end, knowing the Mishima family curse is still far from over.

Quotes[]

Lars: What did you do to her?
Jin: Are you really that stupid? She was created to serve me.
Lars: What?
Jin: She's been my eyes and ears as you led her around. I've known exactly what you've been doing.
Lars: You planned this from the beginning...
Jin: No. I had nothing to do with the G Corporation hitting the lab or you losing your memory. But those factors worked to my advantage.
Lars: Tch...! Move!
Alisa: Standing by for next command.
Jin: Alisa, eradicate him. Lars, if you have it in you to defeat her, then you and I will be ready to talk.
~ Jin after he brainwashes Alisa.
Jin: Good riddance.
Lars: Say that again...
Jin: I said good riddance to a worthless piece of junk.
Lars: (scoffs)
Jin: What? Don't tell me you fell in love with it?
Lars: She's gone, because she tried to protect you.
Jin: Of course she did. She was designed to. I just thought she'd be better at it.
Lars: You... I'm taking you down!
~ Jin looking down at Alisa after she shuts down in Lars' arms.
Jin: "And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." How true.
Lars: What are you talking about?
Jin: It was that woman. That was when I knew what the voice ringing in my head really was.
Lars: Zafina?
Jin: Yes. But her story didn't add up. Azazel had already awoken in spirit because of Kazuya and me.
Lars: So you're saying his return was unavoidable?
Jin: Kazuya and I were the key to that happening.
Lars: He seemed powerful enough to me.
Jin: When Azazel spoke to me in my mind, he said filling the world with negative energy would give him physical form. That was the only way.
Lars: So you started a freaking war...? Just to make it so you could fight him?!
Jin: Yes! I had no choice... I have the Devil Gene.
Lars: And you think that justifies all the things that you've done?!
Jin: Let me ask you, what have the governments, religions and people of this world accomplished? Up until now, people have lived in fear of those with power, and were ruled by an iron fist. Who could possibly save such a twisted world? I wanted the two of us to clash and destroy each other. Then, I could finally be free of this accursed blood in my veins, and the world would be saved. But there would be only one chance.
Lars: Bad news, then. I already took him out!
Jin: You understand nothing.
~ Jin to Lars about Azazel and how he started a war.

  • Before the release of Tekken 3, Jin was designed to be a character with "determination". At release, he became more of a character with a rather "dark side".
  • Jin has made an appearance in the popular internet series DEATH BATTLE!, where he fought against Ryu and lost.
