~ Heihachi in Tekken 8. |
Heihachi Mishima, also known as the King of Iron Fist, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside his son, Kazuya) of the Tekken franchise.
An ambitious and power-hungry fighter, he is almost always responsible for the events of the games, but his impact seems to decrease during the events of Tekken 6. Nonetheless, he still remains the indirect reason of the events in those games as well. His goal is to defeat both his son and grandson to obtain their Devil Genes. Due to this, he is the arch-nemesis of both his son, Kazuya, and his grandson, Jin Kazama.
In Tekken 7, he regains his prominence as a character and it is revealed that Heihachi himself was not directly responsible for the feud or the events that followed, but rather the only woman he loved, Kazumi Mishima. He was the host of the first, third, fourth, and seventh King of Iron Fist Tournaments being the final boss of the first and fourth games while being the sub-boss of the third and seventh. He also had two illegitimate children, Lars Alexandersson, his second son, and his only daughter from the Hachijo Clan, Reina, the latter of which wants to continue his legacy.
In the Japanese version, he has been voiced by Banjō Ginga in Tekken, Wataru Takagi in Tekken 3, and then by the late Daisuke Gōri (who also voiced for Baron Praxis in the Japanese version of Jak II) from Tekken 3 through Tekken 6, the late Unshō Ishizuka (who also voiced Zabuza Momochi, Senator Armstrong, Kizaru, Kronos, and Gantu) in all appearances from Tekken: Blood Vengeance to Tekken 7, and Taiten Kusunoki (who is now M. Bison's current Japanese voice actor as of Street Fighter 6 after previously voiced him in Disney's Wreck It Ralph) in Tekken: Bloodline and Tekken 8. In the English version, he was voiced by John Paul Shephard in Tekken: The Motion Picture, Kevin Michael Richardson in SoulCalibur II, Jamieson Price from Tekken: Blood Vengeance and Street Fighter x Tekken, and S. Hiroshi Watanabe in Tekken: Bloodline.
Personality[]
“ | Greetings, everyone. It has been so long! Can you guess why you're seeing me now? That's right. The Mishima Zaibatsu is back in the hands of its rightful owner. And you all know what that means. I have a message for all the fighters around the world! The King of Iron Fist Tournament is back! | „ |
~ Heihachi announcing the seventh King of Iron Fist Tournament. |
Heihachi is a clever, shrewd businessman, who is charismatic and excellent at manipulating others. He has a sense of humor that is often sadistic, and others sometimes find it hard to tell whether Heihachi is joking or being deadly serious. He once claimed that Kuma would inherit the Mishima Zaibatsu rather than any of his relatives, for example, and, on finding a young stowaway Xiaoyu on one of his ships, was so amused by her request that he build her a theme park, that he took her on as a ward of the Mishima Zaibatsu. His sense of humor can also be seen in many of his endings, and his Scenario Campaign dialogues.
Heihachi has a noticeably cruel streak, from throwing his five-year-old son off a cliff, to ordering the assassination of his former employees. He imprisoned his father for years until he finally starved to death, killed his wife (though in self-defense), shot his grandson, and frequently resorts to kidnapping, assassination, and physical intimidation. Both Kazuya and Lee, Heihachi's adopted son, bitterly resent him, suggesting he was also cruel to them in their childhood.
Heihachi has an insatiable desire for power, which has included plans for world domination, enhancing his own power through genetic experimentation, and trying to attain eternal youth. He has fought against all of his relatives for his own personal gain. Most noticeable among these are when he seized the family company from his father and later imprisoned him under the family temple, shot his grandson after using him to lure out Ogre, whom Heihachi wished to experiment on to gain eternal youth and power, and when he attempted to capture Kazuya and Jin for use in a Devil-Human Integration Program, that would try and bond human and devil cells. In his personal quest for power, he has progressively led the Mishima Zaibatsu down darker and more sinister routes, militarizing it after Tekken 2 with the creation of Tekken Force, using corrupt business practices, and conducting cruel experiments in the name of expanding the corporation's power.
Heihachi is exceptionally good at presenting himself well to the public at large and building the Zaibatsu's public image into a face that hides its darker operations. Whilst his Tekken Force were searching for Ogre for use in his experiments, for example, Heihachi also had them resolving disputes and cultivating wastelands in order to feed poorer countries, so that he could garner the support of world leaders. One of the first things he did when retaking control of the Zaibatsu from Jin in Tekken 7 was to try and bolster its ruined image and to try and bring down Kazuya by destroying his image. This manipulation of appearances has consistently been an important weapon in Heihachi's arsenal, particularly since Kazuya, often his main opponent, is not good at presenting himself well publicly. Even in his personal life, manipulation and the illusion of good intentions are important to Heihachi: for example, when he adopted the young Lee Chaolan off the streets to be his son, but then proceeded to use him only as an obstacle to Kazuya, apparently never taking any other interest in Lee or showing him any care.
Heihachi is also incredibly tenacious. Despite setbacks and defeats at the hands of his son and grandson, he bides his time and makes miraculous returns to power, demonstrating his craftiness and adeptness at handling crisis situations. He has a code that applies both to martial arts and to life that he drilled into his sons: "A fight is about who's left standing. Nothing else", highlighting his divergence from a more honorable approach favored by his father.
Although an excellent businessman, Heihachi is someone for whom violence takes precedence and has an almost sacred role. He at numerous times puts up his corporation as a prize for the Iron Fist Tournament, a tournament he himself founded, and frequently resorts to solving personal and business matters through the violence of his Tekken Force, or even by interceding himself. He commands the respect and fear of many of his employees, to the point where many remain loyal to him, even when he is no longer head of the Mishima Zaibatsu.
Although he does not have the same honorable approach to fighting as Jinpachi (and arguably Kazuya), Heihachi often expresses a respect for women and claims that he is chivalrous, and also expects his Tekken Force to conduct themselves according to a chivalrous code of conduct (though he seems happy to break such a code when he orders them to abduct Jin Kazama from the fourth Iron Fist tournament, and had no qualms abducting Michelle Chang in order to use her as leverage).
Despite all this, Heihachi does seem to have a more caring side to him. He has a love of animals and has hand raised two bears and taught them to fight. Before the Devil Gene took over Kazumi Mishima, Heihachi loved her dearly, and there are times when he seems more compassionate in some games. He is often kind to Xiaoyu, and gave her Panda to protect her (though he does also often mock Xiaoyu and laugh at her). It is also possible that he genuinely cared about Jin during the time that he raised him (though this may have been a deception, since he wished to use Jin to fight Ogre).
While Heihachi has been the subject of misfortune, with the Devil Gene tearing apart his early family and arguably pushing him down a darker path, he has also undeniably exacerbated the troubles he and the Tekken universe face at every opportunity, and has consistently been the cause behind most of the conflict in the games. By Tekken 7, with the loss of the Mishima Zaibatsu's credibility, Heihachi expressed to the world his side of Mishima Feud via the Journalist, allowing it to be judged by the world at large accordingly.
When temporarily suffering from amnesia, Heihachi became humble and wise, seeking to cleanse the evil that resides within his body his past. During this time, he displayed humility and respect towards his peers and masters that taught him how to utilize the original Mishima Style technique.

Angered, Heihachi replied by asking if he looks like a feeble old man. Toro tried to tell him he meant no harm, but Kuro replied if Heihachi is feeble or not. Soon the world will witness the true power of Heihachi Mishima! | „ |
~ Heihachi's ending. |
Shortly after the defeat of Toro and Kuro, Heihachi encountered Polygon Man. The two fought each other, but Heihachi managed to defeat Polygon Man and acquired his power. After the defeat of Polygon Man, Heihachi was proud of himself, that he did better than he expected. He also replied that the formula gave him strength and reflexes that he hadn't felt since the prime of his youth. “ | You deluded fool... | „ |
~ Heihachi seeing Kazuya in Tekken 4. |
“ | Jin: Did you kill my father? Heihachi: Yes. Jin: It is true... Heihachi: Kazuya was truly evil... his blood poisoned by the Devil itself. I didn't understand at the time that something had changed inside Kazuya. Something... evil. Now, after all these years, I have the answer... The Devil Gene. Jin: The what? Heihachi: The Devil Gene is a type of genetic abnormality. It gave Kazuya strength and power that was almost supernatural. Jin: The Devil Gene... Heihachi: Kazuya had always been rotten. He always had the potential for great evil. But it was his pure hatred for me that awakened The Devil Gene inside of him. Jin: This is why my mother never told me anything about him. Heihachi: The Devil Gene enhanced Kazuya's fighting ability. It gave him great power, but it also consumed him. He was completely overtaken by the evil force. Jin: Where did it come from? Heihachi: The origin of the Devil Gene remains a mystery to me. I do not possess it, but that kind of true fighting power is what speaks to Ogre. Jin: I have it... How do you know...? Heihachi: I have been trying to unlock the mysery of Ogre for years. We believe that he only emerges when he can sense the most powerful of fighters. He must have sensed that... in you. Jin: Me...? Heihachi: What happened before Ogre arrived that night? Had you been fighting? Jin: Yes, against some bullies. Heihachi: Then it's quite possible he sought to confront your power... to absorb it. |

Trivia[]
- Heihachi is "the Heavy" of Tekken, being the main cause of the events of the series, besides the existence of the Devil Gene, which is Azazel's creation and centuries later could be found in Kazumi from her side of the family as her ancestors were Azazel's servants.
- By revealing to his son Kazuya that he killed Kazumi (Kazuya's mother) in "cold blood" and had his son to get revenge completely on his father, throwing him off a cliff which may have awakened the Devil Gene, Kazuya had inherited for Heihachi's confirmation on him, and ruining his childhood, Heihachi caused Kazuya to grew up as a cold blooded person and his own Demon Cells surely didn't help to become nicer.
- In reality, Kazumi was the direct cause of Heihachi's downfall, turning him into a paranoid man he is now over the danger of Devil Gene's existence, as her attempt to kill his ex-husband and son, but Heihachi had no choice but to kill her while heart-broken. Even if Heihachi told his son the truth, it is unlikely he would believe him considering Kazuya wasn't aware of the Devil Gene at the time and would've likely though his father was crazy or was lying to him to cover his mistake. Ironically if Kazumi succeeded in killing Heihachi, it is likely she would've been the one who Kazuya would've sworn vengeance against rather his father, making Kazuya's fall inevitable either way.
- Heihachi's wrongdoing is the trigger of various negative events in the storylines of many Tekken supporting characters, such as Michelle Chang, Ling Xiaoyu, Kuma, Paul Phoenix, Yoshimitsu, Steve Fox, Nina Williams, Feng Wei, Bryan Fury, Doctor Bosconovitch, Julia Chang, Jack, Jane, Dr. Abel, Lei Wulong, Combot, Mokujin, and others.
- Although Ogre is the main antagonist in Tekken 3, it's Heihachi who awakened him for his own greed and is the one who used Jin and Michelle for his own goal to capture the alien monster. Heihachi is indirectly responsible for the deaths of King I and the aggression of Baek Doo San and Jun Kazama's disappearance by Ogre.
- Miguel blames Heihachi for all the bad things in Tekken and the world war against Jin, stating that it was Heihachi who put humanity in that situation in the first place. Kuma states that all his grief and the chaotic situation happened because of his master's incompetence (in Tekken 3 and Tekken 4 and provoking G Corporation)
- He was responsible for the corruption of his oldest Son Kazuya into becoming the an evil person corrupted by his devil gene as the second most recurring antagonist of the series by throwing him off a cliff who eventually kills him.
- He was also responsible for the path his grandson Jin takes by betraying him Jin caused his hatred of his paretal side and the devil gene from his grandmother's side so much that he caused the events of Tekken 6.
- The eighth game reveals that he has a daughter named Reina who unlike the rest of her kin, actually loves and respects him looking up to him as role model and wanting to continue his legacy even going as to so far to unlock the devil gene while Jin and Kazuya lose their powers.
- In Tekken 5's Devil Within mini-game, G Corporation scientists created some Heihachi clones along with a modified Gun Jack in a lab structure in Mexico, built above old ruins where Ogre regenerated after recovering for two years from his defeat. Jin destroyed the Heihachi clones. Namco has never confirmed if the mini-game's story is canon, but chronologically it takes place a month after Tekken 4 and prior to Tekken 5.
- Jin Kazama, Ling Xiaoyu, and Miharu Hirano are among the people who attend Heihachi's school (although, as of the end of the third tournament, Jin stopped attending). Although Jin was the owner of this school in Tekken 6, Heihachi's statue remained there intact.
- Heihachi was the host of the first, third, fourth, and seventh tournaments.
- In the non-canonical movie Tekken: Blood Vengeance, Heihachi kept faking his death like in the games and let Jin and Kazuya fight against each other:
- The movie happens between Tekken 5 and Tekken 6, after Heihachi was ambushed by the Tekken Force and Jin already started to fight against Kazuya, who already leader of G Corporation.
- It was shown that a secret laboratory where Shin Kamiya and his friends were used as Heihachi's test subjects for immortality is located underground. Shin was also a former student who was transferred to KIS (Kyoto International School) with Xiaoyu and Alisa.
- Heihachi used Shin as a bait for Kazuya and Jin to lure them in the Kyoto castle, kill them, and find the ancient power of Mokujin.
- In this version, Heihachi doesn't seem to like Xiaoyu and Panda like in the games and even tried to kill them with his Mokujin monster. The half-events of the movie don't affect the games, where Jin learned about his grandfather's status from Nina in the game.
- Heihachi was described by Harada to be the embodiment of the evil lurking in the hearts of men.
- Heihachi alongside Paul Phoenix, Yoshimitsu, and Nina Williams were the only characters to show up in every game.
- As of 2024, he shares the same Japanese voice actor as M. Bison from Street Fighter.
- Both are original full-fledged fighting game super villains on their home series.
- They were initially thought to have died at the hands of original protagonists Ryu and Kazuya Mishima in mid late-2010s video games Street Fighter V and Tekken 7.
- Their new Japanese voice actor, Taiten Kusunoki previously voiced both characters outside their home series' main entries, namely Disney's Wreck-It Ralph movie and Netflix's Tekken: Bloodline anime series, before becoming their main voices in 2024 at a same year where they are revealed to have been revived while temporarily suffered amnesia upon their return as playable DLC fighters in Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8.
