Kiwifruit (猕猴桃, lit. "Macaque Peach"; pinyin: Míhóutáo), also known as "Monkeyfruit"^[1], internally referred to as "kiwifruit", is a monthly special plant in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2. He attacks by throwing his staff at zombies, which stops when it hits one, and spins for a few seconds, damaging all zombies on that tile. When upgraded, his staff spins around for a longer amount of time.

Origins[]

Kiwifruit is based on the golden kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis). His name, in Chinese, however, is a pun, as the word '猕猴' in its name '猕猴桃' means macaque, a genus of monkey famous in China.

His appearance, according to the aforementioned monkey resemblance, is a reference to Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, originating from the ancient Chinese classic novel Journey to the West, who wears a golden headband and attacks with a golden staff. His costume and appearance, along with his idle animation, and its Level 5 ability of summoning minions from his hairs, further referencing Wukong's abilities in the story.

When given Plant Food, Kiwifruit gets a giant Monkey King Bar and smashes zombies in a range of five tiles in front of him.

	Cloning Magic 分身术	When attacking, there is a 20% chance to summon a little kiwi. The little kiwi will fly to the right and cause 300 points of damage to the zombies it touches. It will disappear after hitting 8 sticks. 攻击时有20%的概率追加召唤一个小猕猴桃，小猕猴桃会向右飞行对接触到的僵尸挥棍造成300点伤害，攻击8棍后消失。

Strategies[]

Kiwifruit is a tough plant to use at level 1, as he is very slow. Despite this, he does massive damage, being able to finish off Gargantuars by himself. His sun cost is also low, allowing you to plant Kiwifruits quicker.

However, he becomes much more powerful at level 2 and 3, as he can deal much more damage than he does originally. It is recommended to upgrade to higher levels as soon as you can. Level 5 is optional because it does only a little bit more damage than level 4.

Kiwifruit can do crowd damage so it is recommended to plant more of them to accumulate the power.

At level 3, he induces a slowing effect that can stack with fire-based plants, so he can be used alongside them. During boss battles, his staff can also slow them down, as bosses are immune to being chilled.

Trivia[]

• Kiwifruit is the second plant based on Sun Wukong, with Wukong Pea being the first.
  • Both plants are from China-exclusive games.
• He was released in the same month when the Chinese New Year begins as a new-year-themed plant since the year 2016's Chinese Zodiac symbol was a monkey.
• Although he swings the bar to the left before throwing it, he cannot use it to hit zombies behind.
• He did not have his own dancing animation caused by Sunflower Singer until an unknown update.
• His costume, if equipped, will momentarily disappear during his throwing animation.
• The sound of his staff only plays when he is in Kongfu World, which reuses the sound of Torch Monk Zombie. (Unconfirmed)
• Outside of Kongfu World, his staff reuses sound effects from Bonk Choy.
• According to the devs, the plant is overpowered, so he is one of the plants banned in Arena.
