“ | You know, I never had much as a kid. Just loving parents, stability, and a mansion... and a thriving baked goods enterprise for me to inherit. Useless crap like that! | „ |
~ Big Jack Horner explaining his "tragic backstory" to the Ethical Bug. |
“ | Tighten: This is the last time you make a fool out of me! Megamind: I made you a hero. You did the fool thing all by yourself! |
„ |
~ Tighten attacking Megamind for making a "fool" out of him before the latter denounces him for bringing misery over himself. |
“ | You know what I can't figure out? How someone born, so rich, chooses the poorest path through life. You got no honor. Without honor, you got no family. And without family... you've got nothing. | „ |
~ Dominic Toretto calling out Dante Reyes for his "tragedy" on how he made a poor decision after losing his money and his father, Hernan Reyes. |
Near Pure Evils whose tragedies were faked or actually has a tragic past and a seemingly reasonable Freudian Excuse but cannot qualify as truly tragic due their motivation having nothing to do with their so-called tragedy. The reason why their tragic past doesn't prevent them from being Fake Tragic is due to how they are immune to being affected by them, with some using it as a flimsy excuse or lie for their actions. In a number of cases, Fake Tragic villains also fall under Debased if they possessed redeeming qualities before becoming villains.
Psychopaths/Sociopaths often fall under this category as they are rarely played for sympathy.
Villains in this category include:
- Villains whose "tragedies" are really petty excuses for villainy (e.g. Morag, Tighten, Bradford Buzzard, Monty de la Cruz, Rumpelstiltskin, Creek, Asura, Big Jack Horner, Oh Il-nam, Ross, and Turbo).
- Villains who brought their misery onto themselves while blaming it on someone, or worse, everyone else (e.g. Ursula, Venom, Lord Shen, Kai the Collector, Nancy Loomis, Hantengu, Finnegrin, Zira, and Supernova).
- Villains who felt unloved or unappreciated but became unsympathetic due to the nature of their actions (e.g. Dawn Bellwether, Wonder Woman, Lucifer, Master Chen, Annie Wilkes, Dr. Starline, Earl of Lemongrab, Lord Dominator, and Dave).
- Villains who experienced genuine tragedies (e.g. losing their family or loved ones, experiencing prejudice, being bullied/abused, abandoned, tortured, rejected by society, living in poverty, having major health issues such as diseases, disorders, disabilities, etc.), but exaggerate how badly it affected them to make false excuses for their actions or simply aren't or no longer affected by what happened to them (e.g. PAL, Superman, Kai Chisaki, Esdeath, Doma, Mother Miranda, Screenslaver, All For One, Jimmy, and Yellowjacket).
- Villains who were exposed to evil forces which brought out their darkest qualities, toxins that were slowly killing them, given powers that were difficult to appropriately use, etc. but instead of searching for help, seeking a proper way to incorporate their powers, or learning self-control, they used it as an excuse to take up villainy (e.g. Bloodwork, Brightburn, The Thinker, Professor Pericles, Protoboy, and Scar).
- Villains whose excuse sounds good enough to be true, but there's no in-universe proof it ever happened, or is completely made-up and never happened (e.g. Chester V, Isaiah Johnson, Queen Ingrith, Wilson Arch, Mr. Virtual and Chameleon).
- Villains who were already cruel and vile people to begin with before experiencing any form of trauma, whether it was genuine or not. As such, their tragedy is prevented from being a legitimate Freudian excuse in the first place (e.g. Malty S. Melromarc, Alex DeLarge, Scorpion, Chef, Killian, William Afton, Hector Salamanca, Sub Lieutenant Blakeson, Chelsea Van Der Zee, and Alvin Marsh).
Mere speculations or implications of a tragic past are not enough to qualify a character for this category (e.g. Yoshikage Kira, The Operator, Jevil, Lalo Salamanca, Ursula (2023), Commander Tartar, and Francis) They must have an established backstory which must come from an official and trustworthy source. This rule, however, does not apply to villains speculated or implied to have a tragic past but still have one of the faux-tragic qualities listed above.
And, despite their evil deeds, Near Pure Evils with a little bit of background sympathy should be classified as Minor Tragic. Conversely, it is possible for Fake Tragic villains to fall under Sympathetic if they are portrayed as such.
Their opposites are Tragic Near Pure Good Heroes.
