~ Turbo revealing himself to Vanellope. |
Turbo, also known as King Candy, is the main antagonist of Disney's 52nd full-length feature film Wreck-It Ralph.
He was the titular racer of the most popular game Turbo Time, who after accidentally crashing another game called RoadBlasters trying to take it over (which got both games shut down), he took over another game called Sugar Rush and made the game's princess Vanellope von Schweetz a glitch, ruining her life for many years.
He was voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also voiced Todd H. Watson in Final Space.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Even before becoming a villain, he was already a selfish attention seeker due to the fame and praise he received as the main protagonist of Turbo Time, much to the chagrin of the other characters of his game.
- When RoadBlasters arrived and became more popular than Turbo Time, he abandoned his own game and attempted to take over the new one out of petty envy, only to end up crashing it, causing both games to be unplugged for good, which he never felt remorse about.
- When Sugar Rush was plugged in, he instantly snuck in and infiltrated its code room, creating a new change for himself named "King Candy" before attempting to delete the code of the original protagonist Vanellope von Schweetz, by tearing her character box and pushing it outside, and while this failed to eliminate her, it did corrupt her coding, causing her to glitch out at times and making her unable to leave the game if she wanted.
- He locked away the memories of both the citizens and the racers, including Vanellope herself, allowing him to convince them all that he was the real protagonist and the true ruler of Sugar Rush while Vanellope was a "glitch" that never was meant to exist, having the racers of Sugar Rush bully Vanellope in order to prevent her from racing, which would reset the game and fix her glitch.
- Upon learning that Vanellope had used Wreck-It Ralph's hero medal as a gold coin to buy her right to enter a race, he tried to have her arrested by security.
- When interrogating Ralph, he coldly refused to give him his medal back and tried to have him removed from his kingdom, and threatened to have him locked in his Fungeon if he returned.
- He manipulated Ralph into thinking Vanellope would cause the game to get unplugged and get herself killed if she won the race, convincing Ralph to destroy her cart and break their bond, before locking Vanellope in the Fungeon.
- Upon seeing that Vanellope had entered the race after Ralph broke her out once he saw through his lie, he attempted to stop her by ramming his cart into hers before attempting to kill Vanellope by ramming her into a stalagmite.
- After being absorbed by the Cy-Bug leader that Ralph accidentally brought to Sugar Rush, he proudly embraced his nature as a virus and Cy-Bug leader, proclaiming to be the most powerful one in the arcade and relishing in the thought of helping them take over any game.
- When Ralph attempted to create a beacon to destroy the Cy-Bugs by erupting Diet-Cola Mountain, he tried to stop him by fighting him and flying him up in the air, where he sadistically tried to force Ralph watch Vanellope get eaten by the other Cy-Bugs.
- He has clear moral agency even after turning into a Cy-Bug becoming the leader of the Cy-bugs, as he was already evil before the transformation, he admitted he should be thanking Ralph but killing him is more fun, and he tried to resist going into the beacon.
- While he has several comedic moments throughout the first half of the film, this is only as King Candy and he is taken completely seriously after his reveal as Turbo and any minor comedic moments he may have had after the reveal only shows how sadistic he is.
- While he does not match Arthur, who tried to destroy the entire internet, in terms of scale, it should be noted that he does not have the resources to attempt anything of the sort.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He relies primarily on Fridge Horror as its never confirmed whether or not any characters died from him getting Turbo Time and RoadBlasters unplugged.
Trivia[]
- He was originally approved as Pure Evil until it was further discussed that he suffered from Fridge Horror, leading him to have a place on this wiki.
- In an interview with Wired, Alan Tudyk expressed his surprise at how dark Turbo progressively became throughout the film's development, going from a comical Ed Wynn-inspired obstacle into a psychopathic murderer. It was incidentally because of this that it was decided to kill Turbo off at the end of the film, as the filmmakers wished the audience to see Turbo's fate as well-deserved in spite of being an initially comical character, highlighting his Near Pure Evil status.
- Early versions of the film originally had Turbo and King Candy as two separate characters: while Turbo presumably had the same role he has in the finished film, King Candy was meant to be nothing more than Vanellope's usurper who just didn't want her to win so he could still be the king of Sugar Rush, with him redeeming himself at the end of the movie. If this was the final version of the movie, then it's unknown how this would have affected Turbo's Near Pure Evil status, but King Candy would have certainly not been so.
- While it's uncertain as to how Turbo managed to be undiscovered alive for 10 years before Sugar Rush's arrival in the arcade after his game and Roadblasters' demise, as Game Central Station does not look like a good hiding place for anyone (he may have however been hiding in the other video games areas), in a 2013 Reddit AMA, Wreck-It Ralph director Rich Moore shared that the intention behind Turbo's actions after Turbo Time and RoadBlasters were unplugged was that he escaped prior to the unplugging, bitterly went into hiding to the bowels of Game Central Station and learned how to code so when Sugar Rush was plugged in he quickly snuck into the game, took it over and erased everyone's memories before any gamers played it. If this were confirmed in-universe, it would make Turbo even worse.
