Technical (テクニカル*)? is a battle mechanic in Persona 5 that allows users to deal additional damage to an enemy, regardless of their weakness, by hitting them with a specific element when they are inflicted with a status ailment.
Technical combinations are used as a tactic to manually open enemies to vulnerability by combining them with affinity-based skills. Certain combatants only specialize in either afflicting or exploiting and as such require a helping hand.
Though from a design standpoint the subject has relevance when it comes to affliction and more, this article only covers Technical conditions with the intent of presenting information on the mechanic.

Profile[]
Persona 5[]
This topic is in need of research for the following reasons: * Is Technical/Resist suppressed if the two statuses interact? (Note: Freeze allowing Physical skills to pierce might indicate that multiple attack conditions simply cannot be displayed simultaneously.) * Can Technical and Critical activate at the same time? If not, which takes priority? Same goes for Weak/Resist vs Critical. * Can Almighty skills afflict Technical damage (as well as heal Freeze and Sleep)? Life Drain cannot. * Technical multiplier for P5 might be incorrect. * Verify Sleep's status with Weak/Technical damage. This can be discussed on the article's talk page. |
When an enemy is afflicted with an ailment, certain elemental skills can deal additional damage, resulting in "Technical!" to be displayed. The viable element depends on the inflicted ailment. When a Technical is activated, the damage is multiplied by x1.8.
The technical damage multiplier and the effect of Weak do not stack: for normal cases, if the enemy is Weak to the respective skill, no Technical damage will be dealt. Freeze bypasses that rule because all of the user's affinities to Physical and Gun are neutralized while frozen, weaknesses included. In comparison, Technical is suppressed when the user lands a Critical hit.
In particular, Psychokinesis skills and Nuclear skills specifically target ailments. Ailment skills affected by Psychic damage are collectively referred to as "mental ailments."
Ailment | Technical |
---|---|
Burn | Nuclear + Wind |
Shock | Nuclear + Physical + Gun |
Freeze | Nuclear + Physical + Gun |
Dizzy | Any |
Sleep | Any |
Forget | None |
Confuse | Psychokinesis |
Fear | Psychokinesis |
Despair | Psychokinesis |
Rage | Psychokinesis |
Brainwash | Psychokinesis |
If the game's difficulty is set to Merciless, like with Critical hits and weaknesses, the damage of Technical attacks will be tripled via stacking on the normal multiplier, regardless of the source.
Persona 5 Royal[]
In Persona 5 Royal, Technical damage has been overhauled, to the point where it can become necessary during certain fights. Particularly for Savage Shadows, such as Fafnir, who have no weaknesses and many resistances.
Utilizing Technical damage is encouraged, as Makoto Niijima's trait increases the chance of inflicting Burn, Shock, or Freeze, opening the door for strategic attacks. Also, through Munehisa Iwai's Confidant and customization abilities, party members can have their guns personalized to afflict Burn, Shock or Freeze; though most weapons are limited to just 1 choice of ailment, all of Morgana, Akechi and Sumire's weapons can afflict either of all 3 ailments to compensate for their absence of Technical chemistry.
In addition, the party can now learn Technical-oriented skills early on to open up Technical potential: Ann and Yusuke can afflict Sleep, Ryuji and Makoto can afflict Forget, and Morgana and Haru can afflict Confuse.
Although the innate Technical multiplier has been reduced down to x1.4, there's now also a chance for the enemy to be knocked down if hit with a Technical, which will trigger a "1 More!"
Even with matching elements, Insta-Kill effects cannot be Technical.
Like Baton Pass, it is now possible to rank up Technical attacks by playing billiards in Kichijoji. The Rank is a global multiplier that applies for all allies in battle. In order to land the trick shots needed to increase the rank, the protagonist must have sufficient Proficiency stat rank and have the right books and items:
Rank | Effects | Requirements | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Damage | Down rate | |||||
- | - | x1.4 | - | 50% | Default | |
1 | Technical Damage+ | x1.5 | - | 50% | Unlock Technical Rank | |
2 | Technical Damage++ | x1.6 | - | 50% | Rank 2 Proficiency | Read Expert Billiards |
3 | Technical Damage+++ | x1.7 | Knockdown Rate+ | 67% | Rank 3 Proficiency | Own Jump Cue |
4 | Technical Damage++++ | x1.8 | Will knock down enemy | 100% | Rank 5 Proficiency | Read Billiards Magician |

The Forget ailment now opens vulnerability to Psychokinesis Skills by default.
Additionally, new Technical combinations can be added after reading Knowing the Heart. It is available for purchase for ¥12,000 from Jinbocho, once all the other related books have been read.
Ailment | Default Technical | Book Technical |
---|---|---|
Burn | Nuclear + Wind | - |
Shock | Nuclear + Physical + Gun | - |
Freeze | Nuclear + Physical + Gun | - |
Dizzy | Any | - |
Sleep | Any | - |
Forget | Psychokinesis | Electric |
Confuse | Psychokinesis | Wind + Gun |
Fear | Psychokinesis | Ice |
Despair | Psychokinesis | Curse |
Rage | Psychokinesis | Fire |
Brainwash | Psychokinesis | Bless |
The traits "Skillful Technique" and "Universal Law" are able to boost the damage of Technical attacks by 25% and 50% respectively.
Persona 5 Strikers[]
The Technical combinations are based on Persona 5, meaning Forget does not open vulnerability to Technical damage like in Royal.
Ailment | Technical |
---|---|
Burn | Nuclear + Wind |
Shock | Nuclear + Physical + Gun |
Freeze | Nuclear + Physical + Gun |
Dizzy | Any |
Sleep | Any |
Forget | None |
Fear | Psychokinesis |
Rage | Psychokinesis |
Brainwash | Psychokinesis |
The Passive skill Technical Adept increases the damage the user deals from Technical hits.
Trophies & Awards[]
Trophy | Icon | Description | For | Reward |
---|---|---|---|---|
Technician | Triggered a Technical. | P5R trophy | ||
Master Technician | Triggered a Technical hit 100 times. | Thieves Den | 50P |
Digital Devil Saga duology[]
While not specifically named, similar mechanic exists in the duology. There are two status ailments, Mute and Curse, which can induce "technical effect" on the recipient.
Mute status increases the amount of absorption via MP Thief or Leech (On a side note, HP Thief is Almighty-type, thus unaffected by the Mute status.) Curse status increases chances of Insta-Kill (e.g. Mudo) and Petrification by Death-type skills.
In the sequel, Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2, ailment-type HP-damaging skills are introduced, the Mute-type attack Silent Howl and Death-type Wicked Curse similarly can increase their damage if the target suffers Mute and Curse respectively. A boss-exclusive attack, Conviction, also has similar technical effect which increases the damage on the target if the target is under the Mute status.
Similar to Persona 5 vanilla version, Technical effect does not offer Press Turn benefit if triggered, unlike critical hit or weakness exploitation.
