The Man with No Name, also known as "the Good'', is the main protagonist of Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, also known as The Man with No Name Trilogy.
He is an enigmatic bounty hunter and bandit who is identifiable and known by his iconic olive green poncho, his stern facial expression, his flashy revolver, his hobby of smoking cigarillos, his true identity being unknown, and the fact that he almost never speaks. A calm but serious individual, he usually looks out for himself but helps those he feels morally obligated to assist from time to time.
He was portrayed by Clint Eastwood.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- He kills a lot of people throughout the trilogy. Even though many of his kills had good intentions, that doesn’t justify him killing numerous people.
- What makes this vile is the fact that the man is nicknamed “the Good”, showing that he resorts to immoral behaviour in spite of being a good person most of the time.
- Despite his humanity, moments of genuine heroism, moral standards and rigid code of honor, his primary focus is money, making him very greedy. He also resorts to dirty tactics to become rich.
- He is generally extremely bloodthirsty and murderous, as he guns down a group of bandits for personal profit even though none of them posed a threat to him, and he then murders several dangerous criminals, serial killers, and rapists. Though, to be fair, those three aforementioned victims definitely deserved their fates for obvious reasons.
- He killed the entirety of the Rojo family (including Ramón Rojo). While they were a family of criminals who kidnapped Silvanito and tortured him for information on the whereabouts of the coffin-maker Piripero, this does not detract from the fact that the Man with No Name massacred a family full of people.
- He helped Colonel Douglas Mortimer to kill El Indio in a violent fit of rage, though the latter deserved it for trying to hurt the former mentally by raping his sister and breaking her to the point she killed herself (which led to Mortimer losing a family member that he loved dearly) and also killing a man’s wife and baby just to spite him.
- He becomes a con man who strives to keep his con going, and in order to accomplish said goal, he kills many innocent bounty hunters and then tries to have his own partner Tuco killed by abandoning him to die in the desert.
- He kills Angel Eyes in a duel, even if he had it coming.
- While he played the Rojo and Baxter families against each other and caused the liberation of the town from the bloody feud of the two smuggler families, this was done for an unintentional reason (i.e. greed) as opposed to the goodness of his heart.
- While the Dollars Trilogy has a very high heinous standard with the likes of villains such as Ramón Rojo and El Indio who run around killing a bunch of people and quite frankly have a lot of personal villainy towards the Baxter family and Douglas Mortimer respectively given Rojo killed the entire family and Indio raped Mortimer's sister, the Man with No Name still stands out due to having less resources than both of them yet he still managed to rack up a kill count of dozens, which is considered to be one of the highest body counts of any villain in the franchise. Plus, he has some personal villainy towards Tuco due to trying to leave him stranded in the desert even though he knew Tuco could have died of a lack of food and drink, and he still went through with leaving him behind despite acknowledging the consequences of his actions.
- Furthermore, despite having similar resources when compared to Angel Eyes, the Man with No Name exceeds a body count WAY higher than Angel Eyes' kill count of 3 (including his murder of a kid by shooting him in his first appearance).
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is extremely tragic and a constant scapegoat due to being mistreated and underpaid by his employer and he was rivals with another ranch hand named Carvell, which ended up causing a fight between the two men as a result. Even when he became an adult, he was still forced to deal with cruel men like Rojo, El Indio and Angel Eyes and was clearly appalled by their repulsive crimes.
- He is on & off villain who is primarily a hero who has committed numerous good deeds like rescuing Marisol from Ramon and reuniting her with her family, saved a town full of people, helped Douglas Mortimer avenge his sister after she got raped by El Indio and defeated Ramon Rojo, El Indio, and Angel Eyes, all of whom are Pure Evil.
- He has a true sense of honor, as despite Tuco not being a role model, he still chooses to share gold with him and never hurts innocents as long as they don’t stand directly in the way of his goals. He also has standards as he lamented the wounded and dead soldiers in the Civil War and he was utterly horrified by El Indio raping Douglas Mortimer’s sister and killing a baby just to spite a married couple, which is what motivated him to help Douglas to kill Indio and get understandable revenge on him.
- He is genuinely affable to most people in general and he doesn’t do cruel things to people if they don’t hinder him from accomplishing his goals and missions.
- He genuinely cares for Marisol, as he was heavily reluctant to tell Ramón Rojo about her whereabouts while being captured and brutally tortured by him, as he knew that if he told Rojo about her location, Marisol (who was already kidnapped by Rojo and forced to live with him and his family) would be killed, so he decided not to give Rojo the information he wanted and remained silent. He later sympathized with Marisol when he had her reunited with her family since he understood how hard it was for her to be taken away from her loved ones and pushed to live with a family of villains against her will, since it clearly wasn’t her fault.
- He is a well-intentioned extremist as he generally wants to rid society and civilisation of criminals by killing them to make them pay for all the bad things they do and the reason why he killed Ramón, Indio and Angel Eyes is because the three aforementioned villains were nothing but irredeemable scumbags who committed incredibly vile crimes, showing that he’s pretty anti-villainous due to mostly opposing the villains he goes against as he is aware they are much worse than him.
Trivia[]
- He is the only villain in the Dollars Trilogy to be Inconsistently Heinous, which is ironic considering he is not only the main protagonist, but also the most admirable hero in the movies.
- He, Stanley Pines, Sylens and Midnight are the only four villains on this wiki to qualify as Inconsistently Admirable, Inconsistently Heinous, Magnificent Baddie and Guile Hero simultaneously.
