The Great Cave Offensive is a retired stage on Super Smash Stadium. It was the largest stage ever seen on the show, and that's often cited by fans as what caused its downfall; it was only seen ten times over the course of five months, and the contestants who played the level often showed visible disgust on-camera over having to do so. It always hosted Unlimited battles.
Stage overview[]
With the exception of the top, all the blast zones were only accessible in specific spots. As a result, an alternate method to get kills existed through the presence of Danger Zones, pools of molten lava (and extremely hot spiked balls) spread throughout the stage which instantly killed anyone over 100%, doing 25% with heavy knockback otherwise. However, a glitch existed in that a character being launched toward a Danger Zone could tech on it freely without issue.
The spikes which appeared under the right side of the largest top platform and in the bottom right of the stage did 10% and moderate knockback on contact.
Minecarts sometimes appeared on the top of the brick platform on the middle right and on the lone floating soft platform on the middle left. When entered by a character - or on their own after about 15 seconds from their appearance - they started going forward, dealing 10% damage to anyone who was hit. The right one could carry characters beyond the left blast line if not dismounted, while the left one crashed in the bottom right corner of the stage (just below the spikes), dealing no damage to its passengers but doing some knockback.
The two cannons constantly rotated, not smoothly but jumping between the eight cardinal directions. They worked just like Barrel Cannons. Characters could not stay in the cannons indefinitely, and care had to be taken not to hit a Danger Zone or a blast line.
Also, Treasure Chests randomly appeared on the map. If hit by an attack they released an item, and had a 12.5% chance of exploding just like the Containers and Party Ball.
Changes[]
On its second playing, the Barrel Cannons and minecarts were given a more Kirby-like appearance, as opposed to the Donkey Kong Country-like appearance they previously had. They made the same sounds otherwise.
Why it was retired[]
It was too big! Players could hardly see themselves.
It was also incredibly jank; most notably, on the debut playing, the contestant, playing a 3-stock match as Bandana Dee, took nearly seven minutes to score a kill on her opponent (Kirby), only to then score two cheap deaths on the lava within 30 seconds of each other. Winning an estimated $5,000 in cash, she claimed "I didn't deserve that! That's an insult!" later.
In its own universe[]
"The Great Cave Offensive" is one of the eight games that can be played in Kirby Superstar and its DS remake, KSS Ultra.
