Pilotwings is an active stage on Super Smash Stadium. It debuted late in Season 10 and is the 52nd stage to debut overall, as well as one of a handful of stages to spend an extended time on hiatus with no real explanation why; see the "Changes" section below for more.
Stage overview[]
The stage initially takes place on top of a red biplane. The fight is done on its wings, creating a two-tiered setup with the bottom wing being "split in two" by the plane's cockpit, which is completely solid. All platforms are soft platforms. The plane may occasionally flip 45 degrees, making the stage sloped.
After about 90 seconds, you're dropped onto a yellow monoplane, essentially a Final Destination clone. Hilariously, this plane flies through the long-since-retired Wuhu Island, making this the only active stage to reference a retired one. You can stand on the rotors below this plane, but this is risky. After about another 90 seconds, the stage switches back to the red biplane.
Changes[]
This stage was originally in 16-bit and had much different graphics. There was also only the biplane, which was blue.
- The monoplane was added at an unknown point in 1985, likely during Season 13. It was initially pink.
- In November 1985, the planes took on their current red and yellow color schemes.
- After October 10, 1988, the stage was put on hiatus for reasons unknown. It wasn't seen at all during Season 18. When the stage finally returned on September 14, 1990, it debuted its current appearance, albeit at night. It switched back to daytime early in Season 20.
- The references to Wii Sports Resort didn't appear until December 18, 2012.
In its own universe[]
Pilotwings is a flight simulator game that was one of the Super NES's launch titles, alongside F-Zero and Super Mario World 1. The references to Wuhu Island come from Pilotwings Resort, a 3DS game that was released in 2013.
