Villain Overview
What do you want? If you interrupt our work, don't expect any mercy!
~ Proton before battling the player in the Slowpoke Well.

Proton (Japanese: ランス Lance) is one of the four Team Rocket Executive introduced in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver as well as a major antagonist of those games. However, he went unnamed until their remakes Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver.

In Pokémon Masters, he was voiced by Shō Okumura in Japanese and Clifford Chapin in English.

Appearance[]

Proton has teal hair and similarly colored eyes. His uniform consists of an open-collared black shirt with yellow stripes and the Rocket logo, black pants, a white belt, white gloves and boots with a single red stripe near the top, and a black flat cap akin to the ones Rocket Grunts wear.

Personality[]

Proton is known as the "scariest and cruelest guy in Team Rocket", and is quick to anger. He shows no remorse in cutting off the tails of Slowpoke down in the Slowpoke Well, and is frustrated when he is beaten by the player and is forced to retreat. He is also cocky, bragging about Rocket's efforts and advising the player not to interfere with their work, lest they face the wrath of the organization. Despite his traits, he's one of the most popular executives; a Rocket Grunt in the Goldenrod Radio Tower, when spoken to, admits her admiration for him.

Biography[]

Johto games[]

Proton vs Ethan

Proton is first battled in the Slowpoke Well, where he is leading Team Rocket's plan to cut off Slowpoke tails in order to sell them. He is also encountered during the Team Rocket takeover of the Goldenrod Radio Tower. He is the second of the executives to be battled, after Petrel.

In the original games, a regular grunt is battled in his place at the Slowpoke Well.

Pokémon Masters[]

Proton appears in the Johto-themed chapter of the second arc of Pokémon Masters, aiding Giovanni's schemes to take over Pasio. Proton first appears physically in the third cutscene of the chapter, interrupting the heroes' meeting with Sonia on the outbreak of Dynamax Pokémon to stop them. However, he and his minions are swiftly defeated by Lance, Karin, and Will, with Proton insulting the heroes' plan to stop Giovanni before fleeing.

Proton is next seen alongside Petrel and some Team Rocket grunts inside Lear's mansion, serving as guards for Giovanni as they attempt to defeat the heroes to buy their leader time. While Whitney and Bugsy are first seemingly doomed to fail facing them off alone, Lance and Clair appear to aid the two gym leaders, something that allows the other heroes to head forward with the group thoroughly distracted.

Proton later appears in the Hoenn-themed chapter of the same arc, manipulating Team Aqua by giving advice on Kyogre's location and having Matt use it to a grunt of Team Aqua, something that is used to make the admin fall into a rage-fueled trance. Following this, Proton makes an appearance at the beginning of the Unova-themed chapter alongside other members of Team Rocket, as they attempt to apprehend N for standing in the way of their ambitions, demanding to have Reshiram and Zekrom. However, their attempts at doing so are foiled through the arrival of the Shadow Triad, who ultimately kidnap both master and beast to bring them to Ghetsis.

Next appearing in the Kalos-themed chapter, Proton first appears alongside several Team Rocket grunts after their scheme to spy on Team Flare is exposed. Confronting Diantha and Paulo, Proton admits to their hideout serving as a temporary form of division, before engaging the heroes in battle. While this fight occurs off-screen, Diantha and Emma end up as the victors, as they later appear to defeat the other admins of Team Flare as well.
