Surge forward and shock your opponents with this high-voltage attack. This attack drains power - attack a rival and get an instant recharge of your items!

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

The Power Surge is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Projectile and Trap Item used primarily to attack rivals.

Description[]

The power Surge's icon takes the appearance of Surge the Tenrec's clenched fist moving forward surrounded by strikes of white lightning bolts. In gameplay the Power Surge takes the appearance of a blue shield-like aura surrounded by lightning bolts in front of the player as they surge forward.

Overview[]

In gameplay, the Power Surge can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Surge. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Power Surge if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Power Surge by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. Unlike most other power-ups in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle however, the Power Surge occupies two Item slots on the HUD: the Projectile Item slot on the left and the Trap Item slot on the right. When used, the user will charge forward and hit all nearby rival characters, including those on the same lane as the user. In addition, the Power Surge will grant a small speed boost marked by a large light-blue aura in front of the player. The afterimage when striking the opponent also appears to be electric blue. If a rival character is hit by Power Surge, they will take damage, causing them to lose Rings and paused their speed for a moment, as well as lose an item like other electrical items. To avoid the Power Surge, the playable character has to step away from the user.

Uniquely amongst other items, using the Power Surge will cause the player to be momentarily locked out all the item slots on the HUD, which prevents from using any items. However, hitting an opponent with the Power Surge will bypass this drawback.

The Power Surge can be upgraded by leveling the player up to Levels 4, 6, 10, 12 and 16. For each upgrade, the Power Surge's damage will be increased.

Trivia[]

  • So far, the Power Surge, along with the Tail Strike and the Phantom Dagger are the only items in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle that can be stored in two item slots with the same character.
  • On release, despite not having an upgrade listed for obtaining 'x2' of the Power Surge, it was possible for the user to obtain two Power Surges on occasion from item boxes. This was removed during the 4.25.2 update.
