Gear 3! Bone Balloon!!! The air's moving through my bones, picking up power!! See my left arm!? It's the arm of a giant!!!
— Luffy explains the technique.[1]

For the chapter of the same name, see Chapter 421.

Gear 3 ("Gear Third") is a technique of the Gomu Gomu no Mi wherein the user inflates the bone structure of a body part with air, transforming its size to enhance its strength. The technique was first hinted at during the climax of the fight between Luffy and Blueno,[3] and first used but not shown when Luffy knocked down a steel door in Enies Lobby.[2] It was first fully seen in Luffy's fight against Rob Lucci.[1]

Overview[]

To engage Gear 3, Luffy corks his mouth with his thumb, biting into his thumb joint (making a small opening) and blowing a large amount of air directly into his bones, causing the hand and a portion of the arm to inflate and increase in size. He is then able to transfer the air through his entire body, requiring the torso to act as an interface for his various limbs. It's shown that Luffy blowing so much air into his body and focusing it into a single limb, that limb then becomes a size equivalent to (or greater than) that of a giant's, if anything resembling the ancient giant Oars' size. Luffy's use of the technique demonstrates that, in conjunction with an already-strong physiology, the enhanced size of Gear 3 gives the user's limbs more mass and a larger area to attack with far greater strength, but the trade-off is that the user sacrifices mobility for this strength, as their limbs are now so large that they have trouble moving, which can be disadvantageous against fast, agile opponents. The technique is called Gear Three in the VIZ manga, and Third Gear in the Funimation adaptations.

Luffy regards the use of Gear 3 as necessary when raw physical strength is needed. The direct inflating of his bones as opposed to his body is the key difference between this form and his old "Gomu Gomu no Fusen" move, where his balloon form was soft and squishy like a regular balloon; conversely, the inflated bones of Gear 3 are very hard and firm when attacking, similar to an inflated car tire. Unlike Gomu Gomu no Fusen, bullets shot at the user ricochet off of Gear 3 instead of bouncing off. The bones' being harder also mean a lot of compression of air takes place when using Gear 3, making the technique nothing like a "for-show" move as Rob Lucci initially thought when first seeing it, but instead like a giant mace of astounding mass.

When switching limbs to attack with, Luffy brings the air back to his chest and then shifts it into another body part. The downside is the lag time in which it takes Luffy to transfer and re-channel the amount of air trapped inside his bones can be very disadvantageous.

Before the Timeskip[]

Starting Gear 3 Pre Timeskip

Luffy inflates his arm to begin Gear 3 before the timeskip.

Before the timeskip, while in Gear 3, it proved quite difficult for Luffy to move while part of his anatomy has been converted to gigantic proportions, making the Gear inadvisable to use against opponents capable of moving at high speeds (like Lucci) or in an enclosed place as he is leaving himself vulnerable to attack, which is why since his battle against Rob Lucci, Luffy tends to only activate Gear 3 against massive and often slow-moving targets whom he likes to assault with his Gear 3 moves coming from high above in mid-air, where the said attacks could not be obstructed.[1] To deactivate Gear 3, Luffy leaves the form by exhaling heavily, which can cause him to be propelled backwards.

Gear 3 Side Effect Pre Timeskip

Luffy after deactivating Gear 3.

The deactivation of Gear 3 brings about shrinking, which is a negative side-effect for Luffy due to the massive expansion undergone prior to release. The amount of time Luffy spends in his shrunken form is roughly equivalent to the amount of time spent in Gear 3 mode.[2] This shrunken form has shown little to no ability to stretch at all, and it has been shown that Luffy loses an incredible amount of strength when he kept hitting Lucci's face to no effect. The best strategy Luffy could use, while waiting for himself to return to normal, is to run and hide from an opponent for the duration of the shrinkage. Another strategy is only using Gear 3 for a few seconds for only one move, so his shrinkage is minimized. But during the Impel Down Great Escape Incident, Luffy demonstrated using his Gear 3 with great speed. Being fast enough to defeat Jailer Beasts, who possessed Soru-level speed. During the Summit War of Marineford, this drawback was not shown during every use, perhaps being glossed over by the many different battles taking place all at once; but the anime still includes the drawback.

When Luffy used Gomu Gomu no Gigant Fusen during his encounter with Fleet Admiral Sengoku, Sengoku himself referred to Gear 3's increased size as Gigantification.

After the Timeskip[]

Gear 3 Activation Post Timeskip

Luffy's new-found control over Gear 3.

After the timeskip, as with Gear 2, Luffy seems to have obtained better skill at utilizing Gear 3. Previously, Gear 3 would increase the size of the majority of Luffy's arm, thus reducing the speed of the attack in exchange for a powerful impact. However, Luffy after two years can seemingly control where the air is stored within his limbs, where his fist becomes large and instead of the air being equally distributed throughout his arm, an equivalently large mass forms behind the fist at his wrist. This allows a majority of Luffy's arm to remain as it is, permitting him to stretch it, thus allowing him to attack and withdraw much faster than pre-timeskip. He was seen being able to enlarge his right fist while inside a Yarukiman bubble (where there is limited air supply) rapidly upon engaging against the Kraken, demonstrating the use of infusing Armament Haki into his colossal-sized arm to enforce its durability and defeat the sea monster. Luffy is confirmed to have overcome his weakness of shrinking when deactivating this Gear,[4] after inflating both his arms and using "Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling" on Noah for a prolonged period of time and not turning into his chibi form. Luffy has also developed enough control to decide how big he wishes to have his limbs get.

Luffy has also shown to use this form defensively in battle, as seen when he fought Admiral Fujitora. In this battle Luffy enlarged his arm using Gear 3 (though the enlargement was comparatively small compared to usual), and applied Armament hardening to it in order to use it like a shield against the Admiral's powerful attacks. In this way, it was capable to defend against Fujitora's slashing attacks.[5]

Techniques[]

Most of the techniques in this mode are named the same as the regular attacks with "Gigant" added after the "Gomu Gomu no" prefix. "Gigant" is German for "Giant". In some techniques like Gigant Whip and Gigant Axe, Luffy uses the English name of the technique instead of the Japanese name, saying "Axe" and "Whip" instead of "Ono" and "Muchi". The known named techniques that have been used by Luffy so far in this form are as follows:

Pre-Timeskip[]

  • Hone Fusen (骨風船, Hone Fūsen?, literally meaning "Bone Balloon"): Luffy inflates his body by blowing air into his bones. This is done by biting into his right thumb, presumably cutting it open down to the bone, and then blowing air directly into the opened bone. This technique seems to give Luffy a sturdier defense than the regular balloon, since bullets now ricochet off of him instead of bouncing off of him. Due to this form having a disadvantage of moving about, he can transfer his air into his torso, and then launch himself with his "Gomu Gomu no Rocket" technique. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci.[1] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Bone Balloon.
Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol

Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・ピストル, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Pistoru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Pistol/Gun"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Pistol technique. Luffy delivers a punch with extreme force due to the larger size of his fist. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci. Its sheer power was able to fling him from the Bridge of Hesitation on to a Buster Call battleship, despite him using Tekkai to strengthen his defense.[6] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Pistol.
  • Gomu Gomu no Rocket (ゴムゴムのロケット, Gomu Gomu no Rokketo?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Rocket"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Rocket technique. While using this move, Luffy's chest bones are inflated, and bullets ricochet off his body. This is not explicitly named as a "Gigant" move. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci.[7]
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Axe (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・アックス, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Akkusu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Axe"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Ono technique. Luffy shoots his leg into the air, transfers the air in his body to his leg, then brings it down on his target. It has even more power due to his enlarged foot and leg. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci. Its sheer power is able to damage and create a hole in the deck of a Buster Call battleship.[8] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Axe. Like the Jet version of Ono, it lacks the "sen" (war) kanji (戦).
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Whip (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・ウィップ, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Wippu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Whip"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Muchi technique. Luffy transfers the air in his body to his leg while performing a sweeping kick. It has more power due to his enlarged foot and leg. This was first seen being used against Rob Lucci. Its sheer power is able to damage the mast of a Buster Call battleship.[10] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Whip.
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Bazooka (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・バズーカ, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Bazūka?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Bazooka"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Bazooka technique. To create this attack, Luffy inflates both his arms by biting both his thumbs and blowing into them. With both his arms inflated to large proportions, Luffy then delivers the attack onto an opponent the same way he regularly does with a normal Bazooka attack, except with much greater power. This was first seen being used to defeat Oars.[12] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Bazooka.
    • In the anime, Luffy used an Armament Haki-infused version against Katakuri.[13]
Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Shell

Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Shell.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Shell (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・JETジェット砲弾シェル, Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jetto Sheru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Jet Shell"): One of Luffy's strongest techniques before the timeskip, and the first instance of him using Gear 2 and Gear 3 simultaneously. While he is still in Gear 2, Luffy activates Gear 3 and moves the air to his torso. With the combination of Gear 2's high speed and Gear 3's air within his bones, Luffy launches his air-filled body and rams into an opponent like a large cannonball. This move is quite reckless, as Luffy suffers both from the excess burn on his body from Gear 2, and the difficulty of moving his body from Gear 3. This was first seen being used to defeat the Shadow's Asgard-empowered Gecko Moria.[14] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Jet Shell.
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Rifle (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・回転弾ライフル, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Raifuru?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Rotating Bullet"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Rifle technique. Luffy activates Gear 3 to expand one of his arms and then use it to launch a giant version of the original Gomu Gomu no Rifle at a target with greater power, drilling hard into the unfortunate target. This attack is strong enough to destroy the heavily armored Pacifista. This was first seen being used against PX-4. The fist produced in this attack is approximately the same size as the entire body of the giant Luffy uses it to defeat.[15] In the anime, a Armament Haki-infused version of this attack was used against Katakuri.[16] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Rifle. Unlike the variations of Jet Rifle, this version of the attack is written in kanji like the original base version.
Gomu Gomu no Gigant Stamp

Luffy's Gigant Stamp combined with Mr. 3's Giant Candle Wall.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Stamp (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・スタンプ, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Sutampu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Stamp"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Stamp technique. Luffy transfers the air in his body to his leg, then performs a straight kick. This was first used in conjunction with Mr. 3's Giant Candle Wall to push it back calling back to how Mr. 3 was defeated with a regular Gomu Gomu no Stamp. This was first seen being used against Magellan.[17] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Stamp.
    • Luffy used an unnamed version empowered by Armament and Supreme King Haki against Kaidou.[18]
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Fusen (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・風船, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Fūsen?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Balloon"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Balloon technique. Luffy activates Gear 3 and expands his torso to create a giant version of his traditional Gomu Gomu no Fusen, with a much sturdier defense. This move was strong enough to cushion the impact from a massive adversary. This was first seen being used to protect Ace and Mr. 3 from Sengoku.[19] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Balloon.

Video Game Only[]

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Gatling (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント・銃乱打ガトリング, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Gaturingu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Gun Battering"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Gatling technique. Luffy activates Gear 3 and expands both his fists to deliver a giant version of his powerful Gomu Gomu no Gatling technique. This technique is completely exclusive in the fighting game, Jump Ultimate Stars (using Luffy's strongest battle set a la his 8 Koma version, and acts as this version's Special Move A) and One Piece: Pirate Warriors (during the final fight against Akainu to deliver the final blow) but it does not appear in either the manga or in the anime. While appearing counter-intuitive with using increased mass and rapid-firing (especially since in Jump Ultimate Stars, Luffy does not move forward as much during the attack), the idea was incorporated post-timeskip. Unlike his "Afro Luffy" 6 Koma versions of the original Gomu Gomu no Gatling, the Gigant Gatling's kanji in-game is written with the more commonly used ones across media (銃乱打 instead of 銃乱射). In the English adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Gatling.
    • Luffy is seen using a similar technique in Film: Red against Tot Musica.

Post-Timeskip[]

After the timeskip, much like his normal and Gear 2 techniques, Luffy named his new techniques with gun and artillery themes related to animals. In addition to this, he no longer shrinks afterwards, and learning to make the air "sit" at a specific body part, making them much faster and stronger than before. He can imbue Armament Haki into his limbs, hardening them, thus making them much stronger. Most of his Armament Haki-enhanced attacks gain the adjective "Elephant".

Training in Udon, where Luffy wore seastone cuffs, he could use Gear 2 and 3 at the same time without repercussions. In learning advanced Armament and Supreme King Haki, his attacks are now strong enough to damage Kaidou, whereas usual Gear 4 beforehand wasn't able to. His attacks that use advanced Haki gain the adjective "Roc".

Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun

Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun.

  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun (ゴムゴムの象銃エレファント・ガン, Gomu Gomu no Erefanto Gan?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Elephant Gun"): The Haki enhanced version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol technique. After activating Gear 3, Luffy applies Armament Haki on his fist, turning his arm black, then throws his fist forward to inflict heavy damage on his opponent. Unlike his previous Gear 3 techniques, the air only fills the end of his arm, giving him a giant fist with an elephantine round wrist. This makes the technique more mobile, allowing him to stretch his arm behind him, the snapback adding to the power of the attack, similar to Gomu Gomu no Bullet. It is named after an elephant gun, a large caliber firearm used to hunt elephants that used black powder at first and then started using smokeless powder. This was first seen being used against Kraken,[20] and became one of his most used attacks after the timeskip. He can also use a visually identical technique in Gear 5. In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Elephant Gun.
Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling

Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling.

  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling (ゴムゴムの象銃乱打エレファント・ガトリング, Gomu Gomu no Erefanto Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Elephant Gun Battering"): The rapid-fire version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun technique. After enlarging and imbuing both his arms with Armament Haki, Luffy punches at his opponent rapidly which, with the heavily enforced arms, causes massive damage. Since the bulk of the air sits in his forearms and fists and not in his upper arms, it allows him to punch and pull back rapidly. This was first seen being used to destroy the Noah.[21] In one of the specials, it was shown that he can also perform this technique with a single arm while retaining enough power to cause extensive damage to a large Marine base.[22] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Elephant Gatling.
Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum

Luffy defeats Caesar Clown with Grizzly Magnum.

  • Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum (ゴムゴムの灰熊銃グリズリー・マグナム, Gomu Gomu no Gurizurī Magunamu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Grizzly/Ash Bear Gun"): A combination of the Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun and the Gomu Gomu no Bazooka. Luffy gets distance away from his opponent and activates Gear 3 on both his arms simultaneously. He then runs towards the target with both his arms still static behind him before leaping in the air. While flying toward the enemy at a great speed he implements Armament Haki into his arms, turning them black. He retracts his arms, and launches his attack with a great destructive power. The technique is named after the Grizzly Win Mag made by the gun manufacturer L.A.R. This was first seen being used to defeat Caesar Clown.[23] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Grizzly Magnum. The kanji's literal reading is "kaiyūjū", where the kanji used in this case is the Chinese term for a grizzly bear. This would normally not be applicable to Japanese as the proper Japanese term would instead be "Hai'iroguma" (灰色熊, lit. Ash-Colored Bear).
  • Gomu Gomu no Thor Elephant Gun (ゴムゴムの雷将象銃トール・エレファント・ガン, Gomu Gomu no Tōru Erefanto Gan?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Thunder General Elephant Gun"): A lightning-enhanced version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun technique. Luffy uses an Elephant Gun surrounded by electric sparks. This was first seen being used to defeat Chinjao, accidentally restoring his drill-shaped head in the process.[24] The attack is named after the Norse hammer-wielding god Thor, with this attack meant to emulate a hammer slamming down from the sky. The concept of a Gear 3 attack being imbued with lighting first appeared in One Piece Film: Strong World, where it was a lightning strike enhanced Gigant Axe. In the VIZ manga, and the Funimation adaptations, this technique is called Gum-Gum Thor Elephant Gun.
Luffy Defeats Urashima

Gomu Gomu no Gigant Tsuppari.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Tsuppari (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガントつっぱり, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Tsuppari?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant's Thrust"): The Gear 3 version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Tsuppari technique. Luffy stretches his arm a far distance behind him, and as it shoots forward, he inflates it greatly before striking his opponent with a massive open palm. The palm is large enough to hit the entire body of the very large Urashima and send him flying out of the ring, destroying every building in his way. This was first seen being used against Urashima.[25] This is called Gum-Gum Giant Sumo Slap in the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations.
Gomu Gomu no Red Roc

Gomu Gomu no Red Roc.

  • Gomu Gomu no Red Roc (ゴムゴムの業火拳銃レッドロック, Gomu Gomu no Reddo Rokku?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Inferno Pistol/Fist Gun"): A combination of Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun and Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk. Luffy activates Gear 3, inflating his fist, and by channeling advanced Armament Haki into it, ignites it to deliver a huge flaming hardened punch. This technique was strong enough to knock down, burn and injure Kaidou, whereas none of his other Gear 3 or Gear 4 attacks could do anything to him beforehand. This was first seen being used against Kaidou.[26] The attack is named after the Arabian mythical giant bird called a Roc. The name could also be a reference to Balloon, the Roc bird from the Romance Dawn, Version 2. This is called Gum-Gum Red Roc in the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations. The literal kanji reading is "Gōka Kenjū", with gōka (lit. karma fire) being the Japanese term for a hellfire or inferno.
Gomu Gomu no Roc Gun

Gomu Gomu no Roc Gun.

  • Gomu Gomu no Roc Gun (ゴムゴムの怪鳥銃ロックガン, Gomu Gomu no Rokku Gan?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Monster Bird Gun"): The Supreme King Haki enhanced version of the Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun. After inflating his fist, hardening it with Armament Haki, and infusing it with Supreme King Haki, Luffy stretches the arm far behind him while running, and then snaps it back to deliver a powerful blow to an opponent. This was first seen being used against Kaidou.[27] This is called Gum-Gum Roc Gun in the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations. The literal kanji reading is "Kaichōjū", with kaichō being a Japanese term for a mysterious/eerie bird (or moreso a creature that has taken the form of one).
  • Gomu Gomu no Roc Gatling (ゴムゴムの怪鳥銃乱打ロックガトリング, Gomu Gomu no Rokku Gatoringu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Monster Bird Gun Battering"): The Supreme King Haki enhanced version of the Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling. After inflating both his fists, hardening them with Armament Haki, and infusing them with Supreme King Haki, Luffy activates Gear 2 and performs his Gomu Gomu no Gatling which, with the Supreme King infused arms, can match Kaidou's own devastating attacks, in Human-Beast Form. This was first seen being used against Kaidou.[28] This is called Gum-Gum Roc Gatling in the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations. The literal kanji reading is "Kaichō Jūranda", with kaichō being a Japanese term for a mysterious/eerie bird (or moreso a creature that has taken the form of one).

Anime Only[]

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Hae-tataki (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガントハエたたき, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Hae-tataki?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Fly Swatter"): After enlarging his hand, Luffy slaps his opponent with his palm. This was first seen being used against a flock of Kung Fu Mynahs.[29] Hae-tataki (also written as 蝿叩き in kanji) is the term for a fly swatter, literally meaning "fly thrasher".
  • Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Corkscrew Magnum (ゴムゴムのグリズリーコークスクリューマグナム, Gomu Gomu no Gurizurī Kōkusukuryū Magunamu?): A combination of Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum and Gomu Gomu no Gigant Rifle. Luffy inflates both his arms and covers them with Armament Haki. He then activates Gear 2 and throws his arms backwards, twisting them around as he does. Finally, he throws his hands forward and puts them together, creating a massively powerful attack. This was first seen being used against Charlotte Katakuri.[30]

Video Game Only[]

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Gatling (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガントJETジェット銃乱打ガトリング, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Jetto Gaturingu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Jet Gun Battering"): In One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World, post-timeskip Luffy uses a variant of Gigant Gatling from Jump Ultimate Stars, mixing it with Gear 2, Armament: Koka, and Elephant Gun. Visually, the attack looks identical to the Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling.
  • Armament Koka Rush (武装色硬化ラッシュ, Busōshoku Kōka Rasshu?, literally meaning "Armament Color Hardening Rush"): Luffy's Victory Burst Super from J-Stars Victory Vs., which involves him enlarging his arms and coating himself automatically in Armament no Haki, and as he carries himself into the air via the cinematic, from his peak he then performs a Gomu Gomu no Gigant Gatling (which repeatedly pounds his foes and but can be blocked throughout). Then afterwards another cinematic occurs as he brings his arms back to finish with a Grizzly Magnum towards the ground, blasting all targets away. This is one of the many Victory Burst Supers that can inflict zero-damage friendly fire towards Luffy's own ally in team battles.
  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Storm (ゴムゴムの象暴風雨エレファントストーム, Gomu Gomu no Erefanto Sutōmu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Elephant Storm (Raving Wind Rain)"): A combination of the Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun and the Gomu Gomu no Storm. Used as his Secret Attack in One Piece: Super Grand Battle X. Luffy activates Gear 3 and covers both of his arms with Armament Haki, then sends himself spinning through the air. During his flight, Luffy can aim his continuous punches from the foreground via a targeting reticle for the duration of this attack.

Situational Techniques[]

Gomu Gomu no Gigant Thor Axe

Gomu Gomu no Gigant Thor Axe.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Thor Axe (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント雷斧トール・アックス, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Tōru Akkusu?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Thunder Axe"): A lightning-enhanced version of Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Gigant Axe technique. A Gear 3 move performed when Luffy enlarges his leg and thrusts it high into a low-lying thundercloud. When he brings it down, the charged limb unleashes a massive shock wave, powerful enough to cause the entire island underneath to crumble and be destroyed. Later, the lightning travels through giant cracks to give more damage. This was first seen being used against Shiki.[31] The attack was named after Thor, the Norse god of thunderstorms, who wielded a hammer rather than an axe. It is also said that every time Thor hit with his hammer, a lightning bolt would be brought from the skies, not always hitting the opponent, but usually just for demonstrating its powers.[32] In the Funimation adaptations, this is called Gum-Gum Giant Thor Axe.

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Thor Bazooka (ゴムゴムの巨人のギガント雷斧トールバズゥカァ, Gomu Gomu no Tōru Bazuukaa?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Thunder Bazooka"): A Gear 3 move in which Luffy enlarges his arms and thrusts it high into a thundercloud. When he brings them down, the charged limbs unleash a massive shockwave. This attack is a combination of Gomu Gomu no Gigant Bazooka and Gomu Gomu no Gigant Thor Axe. This was first seen being used in conjunction with Nami. It was used in One Piece Party.[33]
  • Gomu Gomu no Gigant Yukidama (ゴムゴムのギガント雪玉, Gomu Gomu no Giganto Yukidama?, literally meaning "Rubber Rubber Giant Snowball"): A Gear 3 move in which Luffy enlarges his arms, creates a giant snowball, and uses it to crush his oppponents. This ability relies on Luffy being in a snowy environment, and having sufficient time to create the snowball. It was used in One Piece Party.[33]

Concludes non-canon section.

Trivia[]

Bonney Beats Alpha

Bonney using the Toshi Toshi no Mi to tap into a future where she has powers like Nika's.

  • In an interview between Oda and Kishimoto, the author of the manga Naruto, it is revealed that the "Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol" highly resembles the "Partial Expansion Jutsu" used by Chōji Akimichi, which prompted Oda to inform and apologize to Kishimoto of the similarities between the two techniques after its debut.[34]
  • Chronologically speaking, the Toshi Toshi no Mi was the first Devil Fruit to demonstrate a transformation technique like that achieved by Gear 3, as Jewelry Bonney used her Distortion Future technique via the Toshi Toshi no Mi to tap into a future where she has rubbery powers like that of Nika and inflating her arm to defeat Alpha with a punch, with the incident taking place before Luffy began his pirating career and developed Gear 3 as a technique.
  • During the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Italian athlete Massimo Stano paid homage to Luffy's Gear 3 pose while crossing the 20 km race walk finish line, then going on to win the gold medal.[35]
