Ace is a cutlass that was owned and wielded by the Pirate King Gol D. Roger, serving as his trademark weapon. It ranks as one of the 12 Supreme Grade swords.[2]
Ace is a normal-sized cutlass with a slightly curved blade, with a saw hamon pattern adorned on the sides of the blade. It possesses a yellow hilt with diamond shape pattern, a golden and dome-shaped guard, as well as a thinner hand guard running atop the hilt and a black sheath.[1]
Abilities[]
As one of the 12 Supreme Grade Meito, the quality of Ace's blade is ranked among the best, being one of the most powerful weapons ever created, rivaled only by a select few other weapons such as Whitebeard's Murakumogiri. It was used by the Pirate King Roger, and was never shown taking any damage, which served as proof of its immense durability. Roger was capable of applying both Armament as well as Supreme King Haki to the sword.[3]
Techniques[]
Kamusari (神避,Kamusari?, literally meaning "Divine Avoidance"): Holding his sword in his right hand, Roger imbues it with Supreme King Haki and then swings his sword horizontally, creating a powerful Haki imbued slash attack to strike his opponent. It was first seen used against Kouzuki Oden, hitting him in the torso with a burst of dark lightning-like energy, and was powerful enough to overwhelm the samurai's two-sword defense, sending him backward a great distance.[4] Kamusari (神避り?) is a word used in the Kojiki, where it refers to the passing away of a kami. In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, this is called Divine Departure. In One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, it retains its original Japanese name of Kamusari even in the English localization and the Supreme King Haki imbued slash has the added effect of causing weak enemies to foam at the mouth. The technique would be later used by Roger's apprentice, Shanks, in his adult days.
Non-Canon Techniques[]
Encompassing Haki (?): Roger imbues his sword with Armament Haki and Supreme King Haki. Roger's Full-Force Burst Special Move in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 which causes charge attacks to no longer require the button to be held down.
Conquer's Strike (?): Roger imbues sword with Supreme King and unleashes a powerful attack into the vicinity with an upward slice. One of Roger's Special Moves in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4.
History[]
Roger was first shown wielding Ace 27 years ago during the Battle of Edd War.[1] A year later, Roger used Ace in his final battle against the Whitebeard Pirates which lasted for four days.[3] Ace's last known location was with Roger during his crew's search for the Road Poneglyphs,[5] leaving the current status and location of the sword unknown.
Trivia[]
Ace as a human.
Between the end of his voyage and death, Roger would sire a son named Ace with Portgas D. Rouge, with Roger having specifically chosen Ace as the name were the child to be a boy. It is not known if the name of this sword played a part in Roger's naming decision for his son.
In SBS Volume 108, Oda drew Ace personified as a human. It took the form of a middle-aged man with the sword's hilt for hair, dark sunglasses, and a handlebar mustache, as well as a tattoo of the letter "A" on his shoulder. The man stands with his arm crossed, and says "Kamusari".
Roger originally appeared to have used Ace during the God Valley Incident,[6] but later he was depicted using another sword.[7]
