The Blue Sea is a huge body of water spanning across the entire world. Nearly everything in the world can be found on the Sea, save for sky islands such as Skypiea and Weatheria.

Nearly a millennia ago, the Blue Sea used to be around 200 meters lower than its current levels, but the events of the Void Century caused it to rise by that much, sinking many continents in the process.[1] Dr. Vegapunk predicts that the Blue Sea is set to engulf the rest of the world's landmasses in the future.[2]

Layout[]

The Blue Sea itself is divided into five oceans by the Red Line and the Calm Belts:

  • Grand Line is the part of the Blue Sea enclosed by the Calm Belts. It is divided into two parts by the Red Line. The first half is known by those who have been to the second half as Paradise. The second half is known as the New World. Notable pirates from the Grand Line are Buggy, Tony Tony Chopper, and Jinbe.

The main governmental body of the Blue Sea is the World Government which currently exercises control over a hundred-seventy countries. The Revolutionary Army is the main force opposing the World Government and they control multiple islands including Baltigo and Momoiro Island. The Four Emperors are the four strongest pirates who rule over the New World. Moving from one section of the Four Blues to another is no easy task, as they are separated by either the Red Line or the Calm Belt, which would entice a full voyage to go through.[3]

History[]

Over a thousand years ago, it is known that the Blue Sea used to be at a much lower level than the one it displays in the present (by roughly 200 meters). Continents were more prevalent back then, with many modern islands having been once part of a single, whole landmass.

When the Void Century came, a Great War occurred between the Great Kingdom and the Twenty Kingdoms. This was followed by the usage of highly advanced weaponry with enough destructive power to destroy whole nations. Those weapons, whenever they were used, contributed to a massive rise of the sea levels, causing whole civilizations to disappear under the expanding ocean. With the Twenty Kingdom's victory, the Ancient Weapons were no longer active and the sea stopped rising, maintaining its newfound level for the next 800 years.

Underwater Ruins

The underwater remnants of an ancient civilization.

The rise of the sea caused worldwide destruction and the death of millions, forcing survivors to seek mountaintops and higher grounds in order to establish new communities, which led to the formation of many of the world's islands in the present time. Because the sea is considered a dangerous environment, travel between locations became harder and most people now prefer to stay in their homelands, remaining ignorant of other cultures besides their own, a mindset that persists today. As for the older civilizations that were engulfed by seawater, very little evidence of their existence remains save for a few underwater ruins, which are now inhabited by a variety of marine creatures. [1]

Six days after the destruction of the Lulusia Kingdom, via the Mother Flame, the Blue Sea's level started rising once again, this time by approximately one meter, leading to worldwide flooding of several islands.[4] Dr. Vegapunk noticed this, which motivated him to produce a global broadcast alerting the people of the world of the things he had learned through his studies of the ancient past, while predicting many of the consequences that would come if the sea levels were to keep rising.

Trivia[]

  • It is theorized that those with Devil Fruit powers exist in an "unnatural state", and the sea, being the mother of nature, detests them for it, thus taking away their ability to swim as punishment.[5][6]
  • Donquixote Doflamingo once stated that if the sea levels were to increase by 5 meters, most towns would end up destroyed by the rising tides,[7] implying that most urban areas in the world are located by the seaside.
