"I am Mother!"
―Kthara to Daimon Helstrom[src]

Kthara is a demon who possessed Victoria Helstrom for many years, often speaking through her and tormenting her children Daimon and Ana Helstrom. When Ana freed Victoria from Kthara's control, the demon found her next host; the young novitiate Gabriella Rosetti. After possessing Gabriella, she made love with Daimon (while he was possessed by Kthara's son Basar) in order to conceive a new human body to live in. The pregnancy was accelerated and Kthara was born some time later into a new body. Although Daimon agreed to raise her as his daughter to make her a good person, Kthara was eventually approached by her original father, the demon Marduk, who remembered her of her origins as the demon known as "Lily".

Early Life[]

Attack on Kthara's Children[]

This section needs a rewrite

Long ago, the demonic Marduk Kurios fathered a child, a girl named Lily. After enough time had passed, Lily began going by the name Kthara and had forgotten her true name.[5] She fell in love with someone and had children with them, including a son named Basar, whom she loved dearly. She and her love ate strawberries by a lake, playing with her children, who would regularly pull her legs, fall asleep on her chest, and bring her things to play with.[6] Kthara watched Basar get killed by villagers, pained to hear him cry. Kthara went to the village elders to report the murder, and they said that they did not believe her. Basar came back and killed the entire village, and Kthara began to despise humans.[4]

Kthara met Galileo Galilei and asked whether or not he explained the principles of inertia to those intellectually beneath him, whom she described as "earthworms." Galilei told Kthara that he did not. Kthara's war against humans ended when humans decided to be merciless against her, causing her to build up a resentment toward humans.[2] After another possession, she died in an unpleasant way.[1] This would be the last time she felt the outside world, such as sunlight and wind, for a long time.[6]

Held Captive[]

Possessing Victoria Helstrom[]

Victoria Helstrom

Kthara using Victoria Helstrom as a host

Eventually, Marduk married a woman named Victoria. While Victoria's daughter Ana was taken by Marduk, her son Daimon remained with her. Victoria was marked for possession by Marduk. Victoria was considered a danger to herself and those around her and was institutionalized at the Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health by Daimon, who had become worried about her. Kthara eventually possessed Victoria's body, allowing Kthara to use Victoria as a host.

Tire Swing Story

Kthara visited by Daimon Helstrom

While Kthara was in control of Victoria, Victoria experienced torture in the form of reliving her worst memories over and over, rarely being able to fight against the possession and often losing her grip on reality entirely.[1] Kthara was forced to remain inside Victoria during this time, but was able to regularly rebel against the staff of the institution, especially Louise Hastings who she was able to infect with lung cancer using her demonic abilities. As the years went by, Daimon learned that he was able to exorcise demons and tried multiple times to remove Kthara from Victoria's body, however, he was unsuccessful. Continued exposure to Kthara caused Victoria to become weak and frail.[7] Over time, Daimon Helstrom managed to figure out a way to get Victoria to resume control of her body by describing a pleasant childhood memory, forcing Kthara to be pushed down for several minutes at a time.[8]

Liberation of Basar[]

Daimon Asks About Symbol

Daimon Helstrom demanding answers from Kthara

Eventually, Kthara grew tired of her prison and learned how to manipulate some of the staff. She manipulated Keith Spivey into breaking out two patients, Hock and Liddle, out of Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health. To her plan, Basar possessed Spivey and killed the patients. Following Kthara's instructions and a symbol she drew on the wall, Spivey got possessed by Basar and killed a security guard. The next day, Daimon Helstrom visited Kthara, believing at first that he was talking to his mother, Victoria Helstrom, asking about the symbol she showed Spivey. He tried unsuccessfully to coax his mother out by telling her a story about a time Victoria helped him through pain, and Kthara pretended momentarily that it worked. However, she revealed herself by claiming that Helstrom should not have been born, and taunted him for his faulty memory not realizing Victoria's true intentions behind helping him, claiming she wanted him to be less dependent on her. Helstrom stood up to Kthara, who dismissed him.

Kthara Meets Gabby

Kthara was later visited by Gabriella Rosetti, whom she attacked. Rosetti attempted to use prayers to exorcise Kthara, so she mocked the nun. She bragged about Rosetti not being worthy of knowing her plan, and continued to attack. However, Daimon Helstrom and Louise Hastings interrupted her, as Helstrom attempted to exorcise Kthara to no avail. However, Victoria Helstrom did manage to gain temporary control of her body, warning her son and the others to flee. They heeded her warning as Kthara resumed control.[2]

Visited by Ana Helstrom[]

Kthara is visited by Ana Helstrom

Ana Helstrom and Louise Hastings visited Kthara, and Helstrom tried unsuccessfully to talk to Victoria Helstrom. Hastings suggested bringing up a pleasant childhood memory, a technique employed by Daimon Helstrom, but Helstrom instead slapped Kthara, prompting her to throw Helstrom and Hastings against the wall. This led to an argument between the Helstrom siblings which Kthara sensed, pleased.

Ana Taunts Kthara

Kthara is taunted

Ana Helstrom returned with Hastings, and Helstrom again failed to bring her out by taunting. Helstrom suggested that the two become alone, so Kthara subtly used her abilities to cause Hastings to have a coughing fit. Hastings convinced Helstrom that she was not getting through to her mother, so she told Kthara about a memory in which Victoria refused to allow Ana to accept a gift from her father, since it was probably taken from someone he had murdered. Kthara worsened Hastings' coughing fit, forcing her to step outside.

Kthara Returns Attack

Kthara and Ana Helstrom attack each other

Kthara told Helstrom that she could not talk to her mother, so Helstrom declared her intention to talk to Kthara. Kthara taunted Helstrom for wanting to talk to her mother, claiming that she had always hated her. Helstrom demanded to know what demon had been set loose, and Kthara instead referred to Helstrom and her brother as spoiled, and Helstrom said that emotional manipulation would not work. She tried to use her demonic powers to kill Kthara, although it did not work, and Kthara instead rendered her unconscious, expressing disappointment at how easy it was. She then lay Helstrom on her lap and began stroking her head while she remained unconscious. until she woke up again and demanded to know what had been set free.

KtharaComesOut

Kthara laughs at the Helstroms

Kthara lied, telling Helstrom that it was her father, who would be proud of who she had become. This upset Helstrom enough to leave the room[8] and gave Victoria Helstrom enough strength to regain control of her body. When Daimon and Ana visited Victoria, Kthara regained control, explaining that their father had returned, realizing that Ana had not told Daimon. Kthara then revealed that their father had unfinished business to take care of.[9]

Attacking Caretaker[]

Last Thing Needed is a Family Reunion

Caretaker intended to visit Kthara, although she closed the panel on the door when he attempted to see her. She then used her telekinetic abilities to manipulate various board games in order to get a patient at Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health to kill Caretaker. She gave him the chance to do so by pulling the fire alarm using her telekinetic abilities while floating in her room. However, the plan failed and Caretaker was not killed.[9]

Getting Sunlight[]

―Kthara[src]

The next day, Ellis checked in on Kthara, and saw that she was doing well. However, as time past, Victoria Helstrom's health deteriorated and Kthara passed out. Louise Hastings discovered this and brought her outside in a wheelchair, where the two talked as Kthara reminisced about feeling the sun and wind, explaining that it had been a long time since she had felt that. She talked about her love and her children, describing the memory of them being taken away as too painful. Hastings asked why she was acting differently, and Kthara explained that she was appreciating being alive. When Hastings asked who she was, the demon introduced herself using a fake name, Kthara, and compared herself to Hastings, seeing them both as women betrayed by what they held dear.

As Kthara was getting brought back into her room, she locked her wheelchair, despite Hastings' pleas to cooperate as she sensed something new in the room. Hastings tried to get her to go in, so Kthara instead confessed to being responsible for Hastings' lung cancer. Hastings demanded that she be sent into her room, so the two guards present picked up her wheelchair and brought her in while she screamed in agony. She kept screaming well into the night as the Keeper sought to contain her.[6]

Battle with the Keeper[]

―Kthara and Victoria Helstrom[src]

While Victoria Helstrom continued living through the memory that Kthara had her experiencing on loop, Kthara struggled against the Keeper's power, causing the ceiling in Helstrom's memory to crack. She began scratching at the floor to get to the Keeper's Skull, and eventually went unconscious, continuing to scratch. Hastings found her and got her help.

KtharaAsAna

Meanwhile, inside Helstrom's mind, she altered the memory she was looping so that instead of getting taken by the Behavior Health Department, Helstrom opened the door to find her daughter had returned. In the new memory, her daughter was easily scared while her son was skeptical about her escape. The power in the house went out, causing her daughter to say that her father was coming. As a mysterious creaking sound had everyone on edge, Helstrom looked around with a flashlight, and Kthara momentarily revealed herself to be pretending to be her daughter, before quickly putting the disguise back on. As the windows burst in the memory, Kthara made her son disappear, so Helstrom frantically looked around. Kthara, as Helstrom's daughter, led Helstrom into another room, and attempted to convince Helstrom to protect her from the Keeper as her daughter, trying to guilt her into it by yelling at her.

Kthara (Former Host)

Kthara reveals her true self

Helstrom figured out that she was not talking to her daughter, and Kthara revealed herself in the form of the host she took before Helstrom. Kthara told her that she was not the enemy and that she was also punished. When Helstrom asked how long they had both been getting punished, Kthara simply said it had been too long and that time was running out, when the house started getting destroyed. Kthara explained that she had a plan, and took Helstrom with her out of the room which was no longer safe. She led Helstrom to the basement of the house, getting interrupted by the arrival of the Keeper, and the two rushed away. Helstrom began reliving the memory of her daughter getting kidnapped, but Kthara reminded her that it was merely in her head.

ScaredKthara

Kthara fears the arrival of the Keeper

Kthara insisted the pair hide, since the door could not keep the Keeper out forever. Kthara again asked Helstrom for help, but she realized that she only needed help because she had been weakened. She realized that her husband was not chasing them, but rather something Kthara could not control, and Kthara demanded that she listened to her. However, Helstrom refused and opened the door, allowing the Keeper to contain her.[1]

Helstrom kept the skull with her, until Basar arrived and orchestrated an elaborate plan which caused Helstrom to lose the skull. Ana Helstrom used the skull to destroy Basar's host body, allowing Kthara to regain control of her body. Kthara got in the back of a truck and brought Basar's still-conscious remains with her, closing the door and escaping.[7]

A Failing Body[]

Victoria Helstrom's body starting failing, and while Kthara and Basar remained on the Garibaldi II, Raum retrieved drugs to keep her alive. Kthara told Raum that he should have brought back the person who gave him the drugs to help Basar, Raum tried to explain that Basar was beyond helping and that they should look for more demons. However, Kthara threw him across the room out of anger and insisted that she would not abandon her eldest son, who still served a purpose. Raum told Kthara that Basar would not be able to mark people for possession, and Kthara asked why he would need to. Kthara took the drugs, giving her enough strength to sit up and comfort Basar, while Raum gave her more. Basar then drew a symbol on the wall, communicating to Kthara that someone else had been marked.[10]

Kthara sent Raum out to find the new marked people, while she sang to Basar. Raum returned empty-handed, upsetting her. Raum spoke disrespectfully of Basar, and Kthara scolded him, saying that it was important to respect suffering no matter what form they take. She then continued singing to Basar as she turned him on his side and ripped him out of his host body. She told Raum to find the people and take care of her son. Magoth visited the ship, and Kthara thanked him for distracting Daimon and Ana Helstrom, assuring him that there were still people she could possess. She told Raum to set a trap while Magoth went to the new host's house, and the two left to do their assigned tasks. Kthara lay down and told her son that they would have new hosts soon.

As people arrived at the ship, Kthara began taunting Daimon Helstrom. However, she was surprised to find that Ana Helstrom and Louise Hastings had come without Daimon. Hastings then showed Kthara that she had obtained her father's dagger, scaring her. She tried throwing several objects at the pair while Helstrom restrained her. Hastings was about to stab Kthara, who used her telekinesis to stop the attack. She had Hastings turn the knife around on herself and then stab Helstrom. Kthara mocked Helstrom, saying that the pain she had felt from the dagger is what her mother would feel. She let Helstrom's mother regain control, and Helstrom killed her, planning to revive her, and Kthara no longer possessed Helstrom.[3]

Now able to find a new host, Kthara took possession of Gabriella Rosetti while she was in Daimon Helstrom's house. She found Basar's heart and picked it up, then entered the bathroom, where Helstrom was. The two fought while Kthara made sexual comments towards Helstrom, and eventually revealed her identity. Kthara then took Basar's heart and put it into Helstrom, allowing her son to possess him. Kthara forced the two possessed hosts to have sex,[3] causing an unnatural and demonic pregnancy in Rosetti's body.

KtharaOnBasar

Kthara was able to remove herself from Rosetti and recreate herself as a demonic child growing inside Rosetti at an extremely accelerated rate. Kthara created an illusion of Daimon Helstrom waking up next to Rosetti in the abandoned carnival she was taken to and pretend not to know what happened to them. The illusion watched as Raum revealed to Rosetti that she was pregnant.

Kthara, posing as Helstrom, comforted Rosetti and declared "his" love for her, causing Rosetti to realize who she was talking to. Kthara changed her form to be Victoria Helstrom as Raum and Magoth tied Rosetti to the bed. She watched as time was sped up for Rosetti and she came to her full pregnancy, and Kthara asked her to stay calm, taunting her for joining the Catholic Church, who would prevent her from becoming a mother. Rosetti called her evil, so Kthara told her about when Basar was killed by villagers, referring to them as evil. She told Rosetti to get rest, although she continued struggling against her restraints. Kthara continued yelling at her, although Rosetti realized that she was no longer possessed and that Kthara could no longer control her.[4]

Kthara is reborn

After a horrific pregnancy lasting very little time, Rosetti was forced to give birth to the healthy baby girl which became Kthara's new form. Rosetti, disgusted and horrified with what she had gone through, refused to have any connection to the baby, leaving the newborn Kthara with Helstrom. She was brought to Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, the same room she was in when she possessed Victoria Helstrom, and watched by Chris Yen while she laughed and he realized that he could protect her and the world. Kthara was brought to Daimon Helstrom's house, where Caretaker put her to sleep. While the Helstrom family, Caretaker, and Louise Hastings had dinner together, Yen sneaked into the house and took Kthara, raising her himself.[5]

Taken by Marduk Kurios[]

One month later, Kthara had grown large enough to be comparable to an eight-year old human. While out with Yen, Kthara ate an oatmeal crunch bar and asked him for another, upsetting him. They were approached by Marduk Kurios, who reminded Kthara of her true name, Lily, and calmly convinced her to leave with him. Although Yen did not want to allow this, Helstrom began killing civilians nearby, so he hesitantly let go as Lily and Helstrom walked away together, suggesting they see Lily's siblings.[5]

Trivia[]

  • The show's version of Kthara merges two demons who in the Marvel Universe claimed the title of "Mother of Demons" for themselves: the actual Kthara, and Lilith, the most powerful and important one, whose name is referenced by the young Lily at the end of Hell Storm.
  • According to Gabriel Luna, Lilith was planned to be one of the villains of the uproduced TV series centered on Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider. In the "Adventure into Fear" team-up that was planned, Lilith was to play the main antagonist.[11]
