Trials are a type of duty found in Final Fantasy XIV. They differ from other duties in that they feature only a single boss encounter, where other duties typically have multiple boss encounters and regular enemies in between.
There are generally three difficulty levels to trials. Normal modes require only 4 players, and only four of them are encountered early in the game. Once players finish the initial A Realm Reborn storyline at level 50, they will start encountering Hard mode trials, which require 8 players. The Hard descriptor is removed after the level 57 trial and function as the base difficulty for all subsequent trials. All Normal trials and most "Hard" trials are required for the main scenario. The highest difficulty mode is Extreme, which serves as an introduction to high-difficulty content in that Extreme trials are harder than Normal difficulty content, but easier than Savage or Ultimate difficulty raids. No Extreme mode trials are required for the main scenario.
Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers introduced Unreal trials, which are old Extreme trials re-released at the then max character level with tight item level syncs and no ability to run them unsynced, in order to preserve their difficulty regardless of equipment. Unreal trials offer unique rewards, but are replaced every patch with a new Unreal trial.
A Trials roulette can be found in the Duty Finder, which will enter a solo player into a random Hard mode trial that they have already completed with greater rewards than queueing for specific trials, as well as extra bonuses that can only be received once per day. Normal mode trials can instead be found in the Leveling roulette, as their difficulty is on par with leveling dungeons. Extreme mode trials cannot be found on any roulette except for Mentor roulette, as they are typically too difficult for a group of randomly matched players to complete. In North American and European data centers, most players use Party Finder to form premade parties for Extreme trials.

Behind the scenes[]
All Hard trials featuring primals prior to the Singularity Reactor featured the "(Hard)" tag in their duty name. This was an artifact from the first three Hard modes, which needed to differentiate themselves from their Normal modes. Once it became clear that Hard modes had completely replaced Normal modes, and that no new Normal trials would be released, the developers stopped appending the "(Hard)" tag to new trials.
