- "Maybe not, but I am her son. And I made her a promise, to stand up to tyrants like you. Always!"
- ―Cole, "The Son of Lilly"
Cole is the black ninja of Earth Minifigure from the Ninjago theme. He is the Ninja former team leader. Cole also had a former fear of dragons; however, he conquered it and adopted the Earth Dragon, Rocky, becoming more attached to his dragon than the others. He is the main protagonist of the theme's special Day of the Departed as well as the Master of the Mountain storyline.
Description[]
2011[]
In 2011, Cole received Ninja Trainee, DX, and microfigure variants.
As a Ninja Trainee, Cole has the classic ninja wrap, first used in the Ninja theme from 1998, in Black. Cole's face print (which would normally be covered by the ninja wrap with the exception of his eyes and eyebrows), is made up of two black eyes with white pupils, a large frown, and two large, bushy eyebrows. His torso is a black ninja robe with black hands and no back-printing. The printing that is on the front, reveals black clothing under his robes. Also on the torso, is a little golden emblem, which is the Earth emblem in Ninjago. It also appears on Cole's spinner. Cole's legs in this variation are black with a Dark Stone Grey belt knot pattern printed on the hips and legs.
As a DX ninja, Cole uses the same face and headgear as his first variation but utilizes a special torso and legs combination. Cole's DX torso features printing on both the front and back; on the front, a golden depiction of the Earth Dragon. On the back, the name Cole is printed on in gold and the same golden emblem appears below it. On the legs, a different knot tied to his right. Also on the legs, is a continuation of the Earth Dragon design, here the tail is printed.
Cole as a microfigure is similar to Cole as a normal ninja but in a smaller scale, and all one piece.
2012[]
As a ZX Ninja, Cole's cowl has a silver visor which resembles the top of the earth dragon design. He still wears mostly black, but in ZX form he also wears silver shoulder armour which can hold two katanas in the back. Cole's face is the same as his previous versions. His torso also shows a printed design of some lightweight armour. And on the back is the golden earth dragon symbol, which is absent from the front. Cole's torso pattern continues onto his legs.
As a Kendo Ninja, he has a mask with white grilles showing part of his face, Samurai armour and his old original black ninja suit. Cole's face print is, once again, made up of two black eyes with white pupils, a large frown, and two large, bushy eyebrows. His torso is a black ninja robe with black hands and no back-printing. The printing that is on the front, reveals black clothing under his robes. Also on the torso, is a little golden emblem, which is the Earth emblem in Ninjago. Cole's legs in this variation are black with a Dark Stone Grey belt knot pattern printed on the hips and legs.
As an NRG Ninja, his head is black with the yellow eyes and streaks depicting his earth energy. His ninja hood has more red markings where the visor would be. His torso and legs have earth red streaking across them, representing his power of Earth. This form is mainly black, except for the streaks and eyes. The gold Ninjago earth symbol also appears on the upper left of his torso.
2013-2014[]
Kimono Cole has a black hood with a silver visor, he has a new torso printing all in black and silver. He has a black belt on, his arms are dark gray, he has black hands, the same face as Cole ZX and has silver marking on his torso.
Techno Cole has all black arms and legs, and has a black half-mask and hair piece in place of a ninja hood. His torso is printed with three gray strips of fabric, two of which are decorated with an orange pattern resembling lightning and rocks. Two black sections with dark brown zig-zag patterns are also visible, with a golden undershirt visible below his head. Two releases of the figure gave it gold shoulder armor, and one of these also used an all black ZX hood in place of hair and a half-mask.
2015[]
In 2015 Cole received four all-new variants. The first was his tournament variant, which carried on the black hairpiece and half-mask combo from Techno Cole. Like the other Tournament Ninja, Cole has bare yellow arms with black hands (presumably representing gloves) and a printed torso that leaves his upper chest at the base of his neck exposed.
Cole's second variant was his Jungle robe version, which sported a black Zukin hood with a symbol on top of the now black visor piece.
Cole's third variant was his Deepstone outfit, which incorporated a new hood piece that was black with gray accents representing fabric across the lower face and around the forehead.
Cole's Airjitzu variant has orange arms and hands, a unique orange-printed head, and an all black Zukin mask. His torso and legs are black with crackling orange energy printing, with a large version of the symbol from Cole's Jungle mask printed on his chest.
2016[]
Cole received several new variants in 2016. One of these was a Stone Armor variant, based on suits that Zane and Lloyd received in 2014 and Kai in 2015, while Jay joined Cole in receiving his version in 2016.
Cole also received a new set of robes for the Skybound theme. One of these figures used the new Deepstone style mask and a standard minifigure face, while another swapped out the face for a green head representing Cole's status as a ghost. Another figure also used the green head while also using the half-mask and hair piece introduced for Techno Cole.
For the Day of the Departed theme, Cole was given two variants: an Honor robe and his RX form, both of which introduced a new head with a green "scar" near Cole's left eye. The Honor robe combines elements from several of Cole's previous suits, with a new version of the Deepstone hood that swaps the black and gray color sections. The RX design is based on the Honor robe version, but with orange hands, translucent gray arms, and orange energy printing around Cole's Ninja emblem on his torso.
2017[]
Cole's Fusion variants reused the Day of the Departed face print, with one of them also reusing the Honor robe hood while the other reverted to the Techno hair/mask combo.
In conjunction with the release of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Cole received a number of new variants. One of these was a civilian version of Cole clad in black pants and a sleeveless blue shirt. The shirt is printed with white "Ninjargon" letters, and Cole's arms and hands are all plain yellow. He also received a new hair piece and face print.
One of Cole's Ninja variants for the movie theme also featured bare arms, but with black hands; the others would feature printed cuffs at the wrists. Two of these variants featured a new two-piece hood, black with a brown headband decorated with a symbol on the forehead. The other came with another new hairpiece, in which Cole's hair is in a small topknot and he also has a headband going around his forehead. The latter would later be recolored for the teenage version of Wu from 2018's Hunted subtheme. Cole's movie Ninja robes resemble those of his Tournament variant.
2018[]
Another civilian version of movie Cole was introduced in 2018, this one sporting a dark blue shirt with a graphic of equalizer bars on it worn under a black jacket. Cole's top knot hairpiece also returned for a Black Wu-Cru variant. The black Wu-Cru legs were also used for Cole's Spinjitzu Masters variant, which featured a unique printed torso with elemental Earth and energy printing on top of a torso similar to his movie Ninja design. The Spinjitzu Masters Cole also used the two-piece movie hood design.
Cole's Sons of Garmadon variant appeared similar to his movie design, reusing the two-piece hood design and new face printing.
Cole's Hunted variant was based on his Sons of Garmadon design but altered so as to appear battle-damaged, with the left shoulder of the robes torn out and slight scarring visible on the torso underneath. This variant appeared in two different sets, one of which featured a golden symbol on the hood bandana while the other used an orange symbol.
Another variant, Dragon Masters Cole, used the same hood design as the other variants released this year. Its torso and legs were printed with a black, dark gray, and brown airsuit design.
2019[]
A new hood piece was introduced in 2019 for the Ninjago: Legacy theme, with Cole's hood being black with a dark brown headband. This hood would be combined with Cole's Sons of Garmadon variant for a LEGO Ninjago Magazine release. A version of Legacy Cole with a gold shoulder armor/scabbard piece was released in 2020.
A version of the Legacy hood with an orange headband, decorated with a black symbol, was used for Cole's Forbidden Spinjitzu variant.
Cole's FS variant used the same parts as his Forbidden Spinjitzu variant, but with a black hood featuring translucent orange flames on top. Like Nya, Cole did not receive a Spinjitzu Slam variant.
2020[]
Cole received a second Legacy variant in 2020, this one having robes combining elements from his Techno and Tournament variants. His hairpiece for this figure was updated to the movie version. An updated version of this figure, correcting a typo in the Ninjargon script on his toros, was released in 2021.
Like the other Ninja (except Zane), Cole received a "Digi" variant with a new hood piece and face printing. Cole's version appeared in two sets, one of which came without the new white shoulder armor piece introduced for the Digi Ninja.
Cole also received an "Avatar" variant for the Prime Empire theme, but unlike the versions introduced for Jay, Kai, Lloyd, and Zane his reused parts from City. These included plain black legs and a torso printed with a red flannel shirt print. "Avatar" Cole also reused the movie hairpiece and a black mustache piece, presumably as a reference to Cole's "Rocky Dangerbuff" persona from Sons of Garmadon and Hunted.
For the Master of the Mountain theme, Cole also received a Hero variant, introduced a new hood design resembling an armored helmet that was black with gold neck and forehead plates. He also received a new gold shoulder armor piece and gold arms, while his arms and torso received an updated version of his Forbidden Spinjitzu printing with new armor elements.
Cole was one of three Ninja to receive a Spinjitzu Burst variant in 2020. This figure used the same legs as the 2020 Legacy figure and the 2019 Legacy hood. The head and torso were new, featured orange printing on black plastic that depicted Cole's eyes and bare torso crackling with elemental energy.
2021[]
Cole received a new "Epic Battle" variant along with the other four original Ninja, sporting his 2018 hairpiece and an orange half-mask. This figure sported bared arms, but with orange "gloved" hands as opposed to the usual black.
Cole reverted to a black half-mask for his Island variant, but received a new version of his topknot movie hairpiece with orange colored fabric elements.
Like the other Ninja, Cole received a golden Tenth Anniversary variant, which used the same printed legs as the other Tenth Anniversary Ninja and Wu. Cole's golden torso included unique printing elements, with gray robes visible underneath the gold. This figure reused the shoulder armor from Hero Cole, and its hood/helmet piece was the same mold but with the metallic elements in black and the fabric elements in gold.
Cole also received a Scuba variant like the other Ninja, with a new black hood piece that included translucent goggle elements and was meant to work with a new scuba gear piece.
A third "Urban" version of Cole was released, bearing some resemblance to his civilian movie form but with tan printed legs/pants. His torso retained his bare arms and hands but was updated with a black sleeveless shirt featuring a guitar. His head and hairpieces both remained the same as those used since 2018.
2022[]
Cole received four new variants in 2022, the first being released as part of the winter "Core" wave. This figure received a new version of the Legacy hood piece, as well as new exclusive torso and leg printing. The left arm of this figure is orange while the right arm is black, and the figure comes with the Legacy back scabbard/shoulder pauldron piece. Like Nya and Zane, Cole did not receive a "Spinjitzu Ninja Training" variant.
For the summer "Crystalized" wave, Cole received three new variants, the first being a new Ninja gi with exclusive torso and leg printing. His new Legacy-style hood came in black with an orange molded headband decorated with a white symbol. His arms were gray, and he came with a gunmetal scabbard piece.
Cole's second Crystalized variant was based on his first variant, but with gold arms and detailing on the torso and leg prints. This figure came with a gold scabbard piece, and a new gold hood with a black molded headband sporting a gold symbol.
Cole's fourth variant for the year was his Golden Dragon version, which used new hood and wing pieces also created for the other original Ninja; all four sets are gold, with Cole's being molded in translucent orange to distinguish it from the others. His head, arms, and legs were also molded in translucent orange, and his black torso along with his legs and head featured exclusive printing.

Background[]
Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu[]
Cole is the leader of the ninja team and is strongest in defense. He claimed to be afraid of no living creature, excluding dragons, but eventually overcame his fear. Cole's weapon of choices include the Staff of Dragons, the Scythe of Quakes, the Gold-Bladed Saw Staff, and the Golden Tri-Scythe.
Preluding the storyline, Cole was found by Sensei Wu testing his strength by climbing a mountain with no equipment, and was recruited to the Monastery to train along with Jay and Zane to become masters of Spinjitzu.
In The Golden Weapon, the three ambushed Kai whom they mistook as an intruder, only to be revealed as Sensei's fourth student, the Ninja of Fire. He then sent the newly-formed team of ninja on their quest to defeat Lord Garmadon's forces and reclaim the Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu, currently being hunted by Samukai and his forces, the Skulkin Army. Accompanied by Wu, the ninja travelled to the Caves of Despair and rescued the Scythe of Quakes, narrowly escaping the skeleton legions and the Earth Dragon protecting the Scythe.
In King of Shadows, the ninja head to the Frozen Wastelands to salvage the Shurikens of Ice, and successfully retrieve the Nunchucks of Lightning from the Floating Ruins. Unfortunately, Kai was lead into a trap at the Fire Temple by Garmadon, who made him think his kidnapped sister, Nya, was located within the temple. As Sensei Wu fought his brother, Cole, Jay and Zane were caught by Samukai and tied to a tree, and stole the remaining Golden Weapons. However, Wu sacrificed himself and travelled to the Underworld, along with the Sword of Fire, to prevent the weapons from uniting. Meanwhile, the others were chasing the Skull Truck and trying to retrieve the stolen weapons, only to fail when it travelled to the Underworld.
In Weapons of Destiny, Kai and the others recruited the dragons whom protected the weapons and flew to the Underworld, where they defeated the Skulkin by performing the Tornado of Creation. They then found Samukai and Sensei Wu fighting within Garmadon's throne room, where Samukai was vaporized by the power of all four golden weapons. This caused a portal to open into an alternative, netherworldly dimension into which Garmadon escaped through, planning on growing strong enough to possess the four weapons upon his return. Having defeated Garmadon's plans, the team returns to the Surface World of Ninjago, where they are renounced as heroes throughout the land.
Cole also appears in the mini-episodes Flight of the Dragon Ninja, in which he takes part, and wins, in a race around Ninjago against his fellow ninja. He also appears briefly in The New Masters of Spinjitzu, but more prominently in An Underworldly Takeover, in which he questions Sensei about how Garmadon took control of the Underworld Skulkin army.
The Green Ninja[]
In Rise of the Snakes, Cole follows the other ninjas to Jamonicai village after the report of Lord Garmadon's return. After discovering that it was only Lloyd Garmadon, Garmadons son, he and the others left him to the villagers. When they discover the scroll that prophesies of the Green Ninja, he tells them to ignore it. Nevertheless, he fights Zane in the dojo to determine the Green Ninja. After Sensei Wu broke up the fight, the ninjas go to Jamonicai village to see the report of the serpentine return. During the impending battle, Skales hypnotizes Cole. But before he can be fully entranced, Nya kicked Skales and he ran off. Afterwards, Skales reveals that he can now see what Cole sees, and Cole's eyes turn red when Skales does so.
In Home, he and the other ninjas make fun of Zane for his odd behaviour, such as going into the bathroom when Cole is still in. Cole and the others make fun of him when he wears a pink apron, something they find funny. The next day, he follows Zane to the treehouse of Lloyd, not convinced a bird showed him. Once they arrive, they began to sever the ties to the treehouse. But before Cole could cut it, Skales fully entranced him and pitched him against the other ninjas as a distraction. After being beaten by Jay, he goes to destroy the treehouse, and the ninjas. But Sensei Wu and Nya fly in on the Fire Dragon and de-hypnotize him. After they return home to the ruined monastery, he unleashes the dragons and yells at Zane, and when Zane leaves, he cooks an underground creature. After they find Zane and the new ship, he follows the other ninja and runs toward the boat.
In The Royal Blacksmiths, Cole reveals that his father is a Royal Blacksmith because he recognized the Fang blade as part of a talent show trophy called the blade cup, which his father had won several times. He then reveals that his father believes that he is a student at a dance school. The ninjas then visit Cole's father. Cole knocks on his father's door at which he angrily tells him to ring the bell. Cole does and his father welcomes them in. After a series of comical events, his father believes that the ninjas are there to replace his quartet. while training for the talent show, Cole's father reveals that when Cole was seven, he failed to complete a move called the triple tiger sash (a move so difficult no one had ever successfully completed). At the competition Cole discusses their plan to steal the cup. Cole's father overhears this and is shocked that his son was going to steal the prized trophy. Cole then reveals that he is a ninja. His dad goes away extremely disappointed. Cole then decides that they were not going to steal the trophy but win it. They change the name of their group from "The Royal Blacksmiths" to "Spin Harmony". They perform spinjitzu to the theme song. During the act Cole successfully performs the triple tiger sash. The ninjas get tens from the first two judges and 0 from Pythor (who had swallowed the real judge) but the real judge sticks his arm out and wrote a 1 next to the 0 making it a 10. All the ninjas celebrate, all that is except for Cole who doesn't think his father saw him. His dad reappears and is very proud of his son, not for dancing, but for fighting. Pythor then appears and orders several Constrictai to drop studio equipment on Cole and his father. Cole then unlocks his true potential, by lifting the debris, saving his father.
In All of Nothing, Cole goes with the ninja to the Serpentine Fortress for the Fangblades. There, he gets more into dancing and uses the Triple Tiger Sashe as a fighting move against Skalidor. During the fight, however, he is impassioned by Snake-like chains rushing to the Fangblade. Also, he plays checkers with Jay, and nicknames Kai's escape attempt. He is then last seen where he takes the Fangblades from Pythor P. Chumsworth.
He appears again in Rise of the Great Devourer when he saves Sensei Wu from the lava in Torch Fire Mountain. He also reveals he hates metaphors. He is also seen driving his Tread Assault vehicle towards the Serpentine Truck and uses it to blast Skales off of it.
In Day of the Great Devourer, he gets gleeful seeing Rocky finally return.
The Final Battle[]
In the episode Child's Play, he and the other ninja are turned into kids by The Mega Weapon when trying to prevent Garmadon from bringing to life a Grundal fossil, much to Cole's dismay, as he had hated being a kid. Later, the ninjas attempt to use Illuma-Swords (which, oddly, resemble lightsabers) to defeat the Grundal, but are unsuccessful. Sensei Wu brings them a tea that turns forward the clock, turning him and the other ninjas older again. This also included Lloyd, who is now taller and has new hair. Lloyd then defeats the Grundal, and he and the other ninjas are saved.
In Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Cole is helping to train Lloyd. He and the other ninja head to the city and arrive at night. While Fang-Suei works on the Fangpyre truck, Sensei Wu and the Ninja confront Lord Garmadon. Fang-Suei, Chokun, and Mezmo battle the heroes with their power tools. When the time portal opens, Sensei Wu tells the four Ninja to save the past and preserve the future. The four Ninja jump into the portal and land in a muddy rice field, not far from Four Weapons in the episode, Way of the Ninja. After Past Sensei Wu leaves the shop, the four Ninja tell him about their situation. Later, Cole hides so that he can kidnap Nya, along with Jay and Zane. Then Cole helps use the Scythe of Quakes to hurl the Mega Weapon into space.
The Stone Army starts when the ninja are awoken by their alarm clock. Later, Cole helps to fight the Stone Warriors. One stone warrior keeps the ninja running away. They stop inside a large room and close the doors, and as the Stone Warrior begins to break it down Lloyd suddenly comes up with a plan and tells the Ninja to distract it, which Cole helps do.
In The Day Ninjago Stood Still, Cole is helping to train Lloyd to fight without using his eyes. Later, in Ninjago City, the Ninja save a woman who was trapped by the collapsing street. Sensei Wu tells the Ninja to gather everyone to an evacuation point to be picked up by the Destiny's Bounty, which the only suitable evacuation point was the roof of the NTV office building. The citizens all head to the building while the Ninja hold off the Stone Warriors using the Ultra Sonic Raider and the Ultra Dragon.
The Last Voyage sees the Ninja use the Bounty to travel to the Dark Island, only to find Zane's father Dr. Julien and face a Leviathan along the way. Island of Darkness sees the Ninja search for and locate the Temple of Light, which grants Lloyd enhanced powers and restores the Elemental Powers of Cole and his three peers. In The Last Hope they attempt to halt the final battle before it begins, only for Nya to be captured. In Return of the Overlord the Ninja are forced to fight a corrupted Nya while Garmadon turns the same process against Ninjago, allowing the Overlord to take possession of his body. Rise of the Spinjitzu Master finds the Ninja returning to Ninjago to face off with the Overlord, with Lloyd finally defeating him after Cole and Jay are temporarily corrupted.
Rebooted[]
The Surge revisited the Ninja some time after the defeat of the Overlord, finding them all-except Lloyd-working as teachers at Sensei Wu's Academy. While visiting Cyrus Borg, the Ninja obtained new outfits and the Techno-blades from him prior to discovering that the Overlord had returned as a computer virus. They then fled the city after the arrival of Lloyd, though Wu remained behind and was captured. In The Art of the Silent Fist the Ninja join forces with the reformed Garmadon, and are forced to contend with the Overlord's new Nindroids. Nya also begins to wonder whether she's more interested in a relationship with Cole than with Jay.
Blackout finds the Ninja taking refuge in Ed and Edna Walker's junkyard, with Jay becoming furious with Cole after learning that Nya may be more interested in him. The two are later trapped in a trash compactor due to fighting and later freed by Nya. The Curse of the Golden Master finds the group traveling underground to find the Serpentine after identifying a new ally of the Overlord's is a member of that species, and eventually learn that their old foe Pythor has returned. In Enter the Digiverse the Ninja enter Cyrus Borg's computer system to delete the Digital Overlord, and despite achieving a victory fail to stop him from achieving a weakened physical form.
Codename: Arcturus finds Cole and Jay trying to get Nya to decide between them while their allies try to track down Pythor and the Nindroids, culminating in the five Ninja traveling into space. In The Void they arrive on an asteroid where the Golden Weapons landed after the events of Wrong Place, Wrong Time only to be stranded after the Nindroids escape. In The Titanium Ninja the heroes succeed in returning to Ninjago only to find New Ninjago City under attack by the Overlord in his Golden Master form. After a failed attempt to shrink the Overlord, Zane sacrifices himself to destroy the villain, and in her grief afterwards Nya embraces Cole; all the Ninja later attend Zane's memorial.
The Tournament of Elements[]
Possession[]
Following the Tournament of Elements Cole joins his fellow Ninja in working at Wu's new tea farm in Winds of Change, only to find their powers lost after Lloyd is possessed by Wu's former student Morro. Ghost Story reveals that Morro is searching for the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master, with the Ninja setting out to find their old adversary Ronin to obtain the Scroll of Airjitzu, the first of three clues to the tomb's location. They engage Wrayth in battle only for him to disappear after being doused with water. In Stiix and Stones the Ninja find Ronin-who also has the Blade Cup-and after failing to make the money needed to pay him for the scroll reluctantly follow Jay's plan to steal it from Ronin. Following a confrontation with Morro and his ghosts that sees Morro obtaining the scroll, Kai is able to learn of an alternate means of learning Airjitzu from Ronin in exchange for the Ninjas' shares in the tea farm.
The Temple on Haunted Hill finds the Ninja visiting the haunted Temple of Airjitzu in order to learn Airjitzu from Sensei Yang; they succeed, but Yang's curse turns Cole into a ghost. In Peak-a-Boo the Ninja use their mechs to travel up the Wailing Alps in pursuit of Morro, with Cole initially struggling until he begins to accept and take advantage of his new ghost abilities. Kingdom Come finds the Ninja battling Morro in the Cloud Kingdom in order to obtain the Sword of Sanctuary, the second of the three clues to the tomb's location. The Crooked Path finds the Ninja robbed of the Sword by Ronin, and then lured into a trap in the Caves of Despair only for Ronin's R.E.X. vehicle to save them and take them to the tomb.
In Grave Danger the Ninja enter the tomb and find crystal walls that foretell the future in their reflections, only for Cole to not cast one despite Ghosts doing so. They then engage Morro and lose the Realm Crystal but recover Lloyd and their powers. In Curseworld, Part I and Curseworld, Part II, the Ninja travel back to Stiix to confront Morro's forces after receiving new vehicles from Cyrus Borg. Cole later sacrifices his new bike in a futile attack on The Preeminent, but then watches as Nya unlocks her true potential as the Water Ninja and defeats the queen of the Cursed Realm once and for all.
Skybound[]
The Dark Island Trilogy[]
Day of the Departed[]
In Day of the Departed, Cole's ghostly condition worsens, and the fear this causes leads him to steal the Yin Blade and confront Sensei Yang in search of revenge. Doing so plays right into Yang's hands, allowing him to bring back several foes of the Ninja to attack Cole's teammates while he is held prisoner. After escaping his guard, whom he dubs "Chuck", Cole faces Yang's students in a grueling battle and finally manages to defeat them. He then confronts Yang, and despite being badly weakened manages to muster the power to destroy the Yin Blade and free Yang's students, who then pass through Yang's Rift of Return to regain human form. After helping Yang see that he will be remembered due to inventing Airjitzu, he attempts to bring the Sensei through the Rift only to learn that one ghost must remain. Yang then allows Cole to pass through, returning him to human form while the Temple of Airjitzu is restored to its former glory, prompting Cole to suggest that the Ninja move into it as a new base.
The Hands of Time[]
The Hands of Time finds Cole and the other Ninja helping out at the Ninjago Museum of History, with Cole still getting used to being physical again. A temporal disruption leads the Ninja to the old monastery, where they engage Acronix in battle before saving Wu from falling to his death.
The ninja eventually defeat the Time Twins and Vermillion, but Master Wu is lost in time.
Sons of Garmadon[]
A year after Master Wu's disappearance, the search for him is interrupted as the Ninja reunite to deal with a new threat: the Sons of Garmadon.
Hunted[]
Cole, the other members of the original Ninja team, and Wu in child form find themselves trapped in the First Realm, home of the Dragons, Dragon Hunters, and Oni.
March of the Oni[]
In "The Darkness Comes", Cole travels with Zane and P.I.X.A.L. to an event in his Earth Driller but get stuck in traffic. Ditching the vehicle, they travel to the Ninjago City docks and are pleasantly surprised with the gift of a new Destiny's Bounty 3.0, built for them as thanks for their heroism. The craft is soon put to use helping evacuate citizens from Ninjago City as a mysterious darkness sweeps over the city. During the course of this, Cole is seized by a dark tentacle and spots an ominous figure in the shadows. Desperate to save Ninjago, the team heads to Kryptarium Prison to collect an unlikely ally: Emperor Garmadon.
In "Into the Breach", the Ninja and Garmadon head back to Ninjago City so that Garmadon and Lloyd can destroy the Realm Crystal and hopefully halt the Oni invasion. In the process, Cole learns of Jay's intent to propose to Nya, but provides some less than helpful advice. After receiving a distress call from Vinny, he and the rest of the team head off to help while keeping an eye on Lloyd and Garmadon's progress through Lloyd's headcam. In "The Fall", the Ninja arrive at Ninjago News Center and evacuate the citizens, but an accident leaves Cole tangled in a rope ladder that breaks. He falls into the darkness and is presumed dead, but unbeknownst to his friends he falls through a skylight in the news center and survives.
In "Endings", Cole awakens in the news center and, after some crude repairs to his remote, is able to summon the Earth Driller. Escaping Ninjago City, he makes his way to the Monastery of Spinjitzu in time to join the battle against the Oni. Wielding the reforged Scythe of Quakes, he assists his teammates but is forced back to the monastery, where Jay finally proposes to Nya. Cole then joins his teammates, Wu, and Garmadon in forming a Tornado of Creation, which defeats the Oni.
Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu[]
Some months after the defeat of the Oni, Cole and his friends have become relaxed in their vigilance, mostly spending their time relaxing as opposed to staying in fighting shape. This irks Wu, who soon subjects the group to a fearsome gauntlet and even defeats all six of them himself in a sparring session to demonstrate just how much they've slipped. Determined to prove that they're still capable of defending Ninjago, the group set out to find a quest to accomplish. After a number of failures, they learn of a pyramid recently discovered by Clutch Powers and set out to help him explore it. After receiving a new vehicle and traveling with the other Ninja through the Desert of Doom, Cole takes part in exploring the pyramid only to encounter the evil Serpentine Aspheera.
Aspheera steals Kai's elemental powers and traps the Ninja in the pyramid, while she departs to attack Ninjago City with her army of Pyro Vipers. The Ninja manage to escape and return to the city to confront her, only for her to obtain one of the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu. While Nya, Lloyd, and Zane go after the other scroll to level the playing field, Cole and the others return to the monastery, where they learn that Aspheera is seeking revenge against Wu for defeating her long ago. Joined by P.I.X.A.L., the group attempts to prepare an answer for Aspheera as her forces fight their way through the monastery's existing defenses. Ultimately, after a battle in which Cole and several others use their scroll to battle Aspheera, she and her army are encased in ice by Zane.
Unfortunately, Aspheera is able to fire off a final blast of her magic, which seemingly destroys Zane. However, Wu later discovers that she has in fact sent their friend to the Never-Realm, and the Ninja become determined to follow him there. Wu objects, insisting on going himself, and later confronts the Ninja using the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu left behind in Ninjago. They manage to overpower him, and Pixal then uses the scroll to send them to the Never-Realm aboard the Land Bounty.
Upon arriving, the Land Bounty ends up on the edge of a cliff, and as the Ninja are escaping before it falls Cole forgets the Traveler's Tea meant to carry them back to Ninjago, unaware that it wouldn't have been effective in any case. After traveling through the wilds, the group encounter the Ice Fishers, who bring them back to their village on Great Lake. The village is subsequently attacked by the Blizzard Samurai, who operate from a castle where the Ninja learn that Zane is from Sorla, the village elder. The Ninja succeed in beating off the attack, and Kai is able to use his returning fire powers to reignite the village's sacred fire after one of them extinguishes it.
Despite the victory and Lloyd's setting out to find Zane, Cole is despondent over losing the Traveler's Tea, though none of the other Ninja blame him for what happened. Upon hearing of a "Traveler's Tree" from one of the villagers, Cole sets up a nearby mountain to find it, in spite of rumors of a monster named Krag haunting the area. Eventually, Cole encounters the creature, whom he briefly mistakes as hostile, but soon learns that Krag is the last of his kind and that he tackled Cole not to harm him but to save him from a collapsing bridge. With Krag's help, Cole retrieves leaves and fruit from the Traveler's Tree, and-after a brief altercation with Nya and Jay, who are likewise misinformed about Krag's nature-the group heads back down the mountain.
Unfortunately, the team arrives back at the village to find that it has been attacked by the ice dragon Boreal, with Kai the only inhabitant to avoid being frozen. Determined to stop the Ice Emperor once and for all, the group-including Krag-heads to the Land Bounty and gets it running again, and head for the Ice Emperor's castle only to be attacked by Boreal themselves. They succeed in defeating the beast, and realize that the Ice Emperor is Zane himself, under the influence of a wicked advisor named Vex. Luckily, the Ninja arrive just as Zane regains his memory and puts a stop to Vex, who had been about to harm Lloyd. Using the leaves and fruit gathered by Cole, Sorla is able to open a portal to Ninjago for the Ninja, and Cole departs after a fond farewell from Krag.
Prime Empire[]
When the video game Prime Empire inexplicably spreads across Ninjago and begins causing disappearances, Cole and Ninja set out to uncover the cause. After failing to locate game designer Milton Dyer, the Ninja-minus Jay, who is among those lost-enter Prime Empire itself in an effort to locate the lost citizens. The Ninja discover that a villain calling himself Unagami is responsible for everything, and attempt to beat the game in order to stop him. However, after losing a number of their limited lives, Cole and Kai sacrifice themselves to enable their friends to win The Speedway Five-Billion, and are turned into energy cubes to fuel Unagami's scheme. Fortunately, Jay later persuades Unagami to abandon his quest for vengeance, and the captured and transformed Ninjago citizens-including Cole-are returned to normal and brought home.
Master of the Mountain[]
Cole and the other Ninja travel to the legendary kingdom of Shintaro after receiving an invitation from King Vangelis. Upon arriving, Cole befriends Princess Vania, and attempts to allay Lloyd's suspicions of her. His room is invaded in the night by Gleck, a strange creature who stuns Cole when he proves to possess a locket once owned by Cole's mother, Lilly. Wu and the other Ninja fail to believe him, as Gleck disappears leaving no evidence behind, but Vania recalls a similar experience from her youth and leads Cole into the tunnels beneath the city. There, they discover that the native Geckles and Munce have been enslaved by the villainous Skull Sorcerer.
The Island[]
After Misako, Wu, and Cluch Powers go missing while exploring the Island of the Keepers, Cole and the other Ninja travel there to search for them. They soon run afoul of the Stone Golem and the Keepers, and are imprisoned along with their missing friends. Eventually, the Ninja discover that Ronin has been using a mock-up of the legendary sea serpent Wojira, and capture him and his gang of escaped criminals. They also catch Clutch in the midst of an attempt to steal the Keepers' Storm Amulet.
Seabound[]
During an attempt to capture the criminal Miss Demeanor, who has been smuggling vengestone, Nya's elemental powers go haywire, prompting Kai to summon their parents. When the source of Nya's troubles proves to be somewhere out in the Tartarus Trench, Cole and Kai remain at the monastery with Wu and Ray while the others seek out the trouble. The crew of the Hydro Bounty later call to reveal that Clutch replaced the Storm Amulet with a fake, and Cole informs the others. Joined by Misako, they had to the Explorer's Club to retrieve it, only to end up in a battle with Kalmaar and his Maaray Guards for possession of the artifact.
The Hydro Bounty crew returns shortly thereafter, and after their apparent success in recovering the amulet Cole takes it to Shintaro and entrusts it to Queen Vania for safekeeping. Unfortunately, this amulet is Clutch's fake, and Kalmaar uses the real one to reawaken Wojira. Cole returns to the flooded Ninjago City in time to help his friends battle Kalmaar's forces. However, victory is only achieved after Nya merges with the sea, losing her humanity in the process. Following Nya's departure, Cole and the other Ninja hold a ceremony in her honor at the monastery, with Cole comforting Jay before both are stunned at the numbers of attendees.
Crystalized
In "Farewell the Sea", a year has passed since the battle with Wojira, and Cole and Zane are the only Ninja remaining at the monastery. The pair are in the midst of helping Pixal work on vehicles when they see a news story on the New Ninja, which leaves Cole outraged. Seeing the state of his team and worrying about the ongoing vengestone smuggling, Cole speaks to Wu about bringing the Ninja back together again. He and Zane, who disabled his emotions after being overwhelmed by grief at Nya's sacrifice, manage to collect Kai from his new martial arts dojo. Lloyd initially refuses to rejoin them, but he and Jay both come around after they see a fleet of lanterns set adrift in honor of Nya's heroism.
In "The Shape of Nya", the Ninja attempt to figure out how the vengestone is being smuggled, and Jay hits upon the idea of an abandoned subway line. The group investigates and finds a shipment of vengestone, only to be engaged by Miss Demeanor and her minions, who are ultimately defeated by the New Ninja. Frustrated over this embarrassment, Kai and Jay come to blows, but their fight is interrupted when Nya appears with a plan to restore her to human form. After Zane freezes Nya to keep her from destabilizing, the Ninja contemplate how to drain her elemental powers as she suggested, and determine that they will need the help of Aspheera.
In "A Mayor Problem", the Ninja ask Mayor Trustable to release Aspheera so she can help Nya, but he adamantly refuses to even heed the suggestion. With no apparent alternatives, the Ninja decide that they will have to break Aspheera out of Kryptarium and steal her staff from Borg Tower. Cole and Jay are assigned the latter task, but forget the elevatoar passcode to the vault and subsequently discover that all the artifacts have been removed. In "Public Enemies 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5!" they appraise the other Ninja of this development, and soon determine that the artifacts are being transported by an armored convoy. Using new vehicles, including a car for Cole, they intercept the convoy and manage to recover the staff, though not without having their identities revealed to the New Ninja.
In "A Painful Promise", the Ninja return to the monastery with the staff, only for Aspheera to attack them with it until the authorities arrive to apprehend them all. Cole and his fellow Ninja are forced to engage the New Ninja while Aspheera drains Nya's powers in exchange for being led to a secret escape route. Nya is restored to human form, but the Ninja are taken into custody for breaking Aspheera out of prison and stealing her staff. In "Ninjago City vs. Ninja", .
In "Kryptarium Prison Blues", . In "Hounddog McBrag", the Ninja are freed from a Kryptarium work detail by Dareth and Nya, and escape in Dareth's van. Pursued by the authorities, they decide to split up, with Cole accompanying Lloyd and Jay along with their annoying stowaway Fugi-Dove.
In "The Fifth Villain", Fugi-Dove proves to be a considerable annoyance, dumping out water onto the dry desert sand through which the group is traveling to Cole's particular dismay. However, he also informs them of the existence of the Council of the Crystal King, the membership of which already includes Aspheera, Pythor, and Vangelis. With his unexpected assistance, the Ninja and Dareth are also able to escape when the police intercept them at Twitchy Tim's gas station. They then track down the Mechanic and capture him, allowing Lloyd to impersonate him and travel to a meeting of the council. In "The Council of the Crystal King", the Mechanic escapes and handily defeats Cole and the others as they try to recapture him, and Cole's attempt to warn Lloyd is thwarted by unexpected signal interference.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie[]
Cole appears in the movie as a student at Ninjago High School and a member of the Secret Ninja Force; he and his teammates are all in the same homeroom.

Notes[]
- He was the third ninja to reach his full potential.
- His mother and father are named Lilly and Lou respectively.
- In season 2, he appears to have a slight cake obsession. He mentions cake several times in episode 16, "Double Trouble", before actually getting cake.
- In "The Surge", when Cyrus Borg said he would give the Ninja a gift, Cole asked if it was cake.
- In episode 23, "Island of Darkness", he gets a new suit and his earth powers. After he uses his earth powers, he dances a bit of Michael Jackson.
- In "Curseworld, Part II", it is revealed that Lloyd took over as leader.
- Cole was voiced in English by the late Kirby Morrow from the pilot episodes through Seabound. Morrow also voiced Anakin Skywalker in The Yoda Chronicles. It was subsequently announced that, beginning in 2022, the role would be taken over by Andrew Francis, who has voiced several other Ninjago characters, most notably Morro.
- In the English release of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, he is played by Fred Armisen.
- Baxter Stockman from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reuses his ZX shoulder pad armour.
- In the third season Nya starts having feelings for him, because a "perfect match-finding machine" said that he was her perfect match.[1]
- His favorite color is orange.
- He still appears to have his cake obsession in the third season.
- In "The Art of the Silent Fist", he holds hands with Nya.
- His Techno-Blade is the only one that appears in only one set.
- Cole's last name is revealed to be Bucket in the Ninjago Exclusive Blooper Reel.
- Tournament of Elements revealed elemental powers are passed down from each generation. This means his father/mother had the element of earth, since one had to be the descendant of the first elemental master of earth.
- It was later revealed that his mother, Lilly, was the previous Elemental Master of Earth.
- He is the fifth loser in the Tournament of the Elements. Unlike the others, however, he willingly loses to his opponent Jay, thus forcing the other masters to reassess who their true enemies and friends are. It is due to this sacrifice that Sensei Garmadon comments that Cole "fought like a true ninja".
- As of 2015 he and Lloyd are the only Ninja who don't have a love interest. However he was interested in Nya for a while until he finally backed off in the Tournament of the Elements .
- Cole's elemental symbol is the Kanji character "牛", meaning "Earth"
- As seen on the "Episode 45 - 49 DVD Cover" and pictures from Master Wu Dragon, many hypothesized that Cole would get possessed by Skreemers in Season 5.
- He was named after Matthew Cole Larson, a young boy and a LEGO fan who was died in 2009 before the Ninjago themed introduced.[source?]

Notes[]
- Cole is the main character of Way of the Departed, an unofficial story by Tommy Andreasen taking place between the events of season seven and season eight of the animated series. It serves as an explanation for the disappearance of Cole's scar between seasons, and also involves various other characters such as Clouse and Seliel.
- Cole is the second Ninja to have a grandparent introduced in the form of Cole's Grandfather; Cole inherited his Elemental Power from him by way of his mother.[2]
