~ Maccus after witnessing Jack Sparrow's death.
Maccus is a supporting antagonist in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and in its sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. He was the first mate aboard the Flying Dutchman and the right-hand man of Davy Jones.
Maccus first appears when he reports to his captain about the number of survivors on the Scuttled ship. He is watching as Davy Jones recruits the survivors into his crew, besides the wreck's chaplain who is killed. He then exchanges a surprised glance with his captain upon realizing that William Turner, the last one in the line, is in a healthy condition and moments after, joins the Dutchman crew in boarding the Black Pearl after learning of Turner's message. Maccus blocks Jack's way when he attempts to walk away and leaves with the crew after the negotiations have ended. Some time later, when the crew is working around the ship, Maccus is among those heaving on a cannon, before being crushed by it due to the Turners' mistake. After that, he watches as Bootstrap Bill Turner whips his son for the incident.
Later, he plays Liar's Dice with Koleniko and Clanker, but ends up losing. After, he watches his captain's turn with the Turners. After Will's escape from the Dutchman, Maccus is one of the crewmembers unleashing the Kraken onto Edinburgh Trader and several minutes later, reports to Jones that Turner isn't among the survivors. He asks what to do with them and after being told to execute them, Maccus gives out the order. Upon arriving to Isla Cruces, Maccus is put in charge of the group tasked with obtaining their captain's heart, much to his surprise. However, Jones replies that he trusts his first mate enough for him to know what should happen if he were to fail. Once they resurfaced at the shores of Isla Cruces, the Dutchman crew approached the chest, but found it empty. Upon hearing the bell tolling from a ruined bell tower they realized what must have happened and began to make their way in that direction, in the meantime ambushing Elizabeth, Pintel and Ragetti in the jungle. As the battle returned to the beach, Maccus was one of the crewmembers run over by the large wheel containing Will and Norrington. The Dutchman crew then gave chase to Norrington, who had taken the chest with himself, and left upon retrieving it.
Several minutes later, the Flying Dutchman confronted the Black Pearl off Isla Cruces and Maccus was at the ship's helm along with Greenbeard. As the ship got away, Maccus asked his captain if he plans on letting the Pearl get away, but upon noticing the latter's smirk he quickly understands his intention of releasing the Kraken. After Jack and the Pearl had been taken to the Locker by the Kraken, Maccus comments how not even Jack Sparrow could best the devil. Jones then ordered him and Palifico to open the chest in order to check on his heart's safety. As the crew gathered around their captain and his chest, they found that the heart has been stolen, which caused Jones to scream in fury, while Maccus and the rest of the crew recoiled in terror of his wrath.
At World's End[]
As East India Trading Company arrived onto the Flying Dutchman, Maccus went on to confront them with the rest of the crew, with his captain joining them soon after. Upon hearing of the Company's intentions, the first mate was as shocked and infuriated as the rest of the crew. Several days later, as the crew of the Flying Dutchman had been alarmed about the escape of the prisoners, Maccus arrived onto the scene where he was among those to witness Admiral James Norrington's death. Shocked, upon the arrival of Davy Jones Maccus ordered to make way to the captain's cabin, in order to secure the Chest. However, upon entering it he and those who followed were met with a dozen of E.I.T.C soldiers under the command of Mr. Mercer, all pointing their rifles and cannons at the Chest. Once they were all joined by Jones, Mercer revealed himself to be in possession of the key to the Chest, before proclaiming himself to be in the command of the Dutchman from now on.
During the battle of Maelstrom Maccus joined several of his crewmembers in regrouping with their captain, after the latter retrieved the key from Mercer. They all came across Jack Sparrow, who escaped from the brig, and then witnessed his further escape with the chest. Later, he was seen killing one of the pirates from the opposing crew, before eventually spotting William Turner in possession of the Dead Man's Chest. Calling out to his opponent, the first mate attacked Turner but was quickly stopped by Jack the Monkey, who had been fired from the Pearl's cannon by Pintel and Ragetti, causing the distracted Maccus to fall down onto the main deck of the Dutchman. After Davy Jones has been killed and Will Turner became the Flying Dutchman's new captain, Maccus reverted back to his human form like the rest of the crew.
Appearance[]
As with other members of Jones' crew, over time Maccus took on characteristics of the sea flora and fauna they resided amongst; most notably, his scarred head had the appearance of that of a hammerhead shark, and had sharp, fang-like teeth much like those of a shark.
During his painful mutation, his left eye migrated from its socket over to the left side of his extended hammerhead. Maccus' body was covered in coral, barnacles and starfish, and his left forearm and hand was encased in a lobster-shell gauntlet. Several pairs of lobster legs grew out of his back.
