History[]
Biography[]
Ray Donovan was born in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, while Sydney Manning was born in Spokane, Washington. In childhood, both suffered sexual abuse at the hands of their fathers. As a result, both were put into foster homes. As teenagers, they began abusing drugs and alcohol to help them cope with the trauma, which would ultimately end up getting them in trouble with the law. Some time after, Raymond and Sydney met in Alcoholics Anonymous, where they were able to relate with one another. Ray was still not over his ex-girlfriend, Amy Wichowsky, so Sydney decided to poison her and make it look like she overdosed. Raymond began to date Sydney, but they had trouble with completing the last steps of the program, and this trouble and relapse would lead them to committing a spree of crimes.
"The Thirteenth Step"[]
In 2011, the duo, young and in love, stop at a gas station in Miles City, Montana. While inside, they start contemplating marriage, which a customer overhears, and tells them that marriage is a mistake. Offended at the man's remarks, Ray pulls out a gun and shoots him. Joining in with her lover, Sydney pulls out her gun and begins shooting various people. The duo claimed six victims in Miles City and then went on to claim more in Billings, Montana, afterwards blowing the gas station up.
In Helena, Montana, Ray stops at an Alcohol Support meeting where he tells his story to a group and tells them he's having trouble with the eighth and ninth step. While Ray is in the meeting, Sydney seduces and robs a man named Jason, pistol whipping him after they have sex. When Ray is told by the group leader Tim, that he needs to accept his shortcomings and make amends, Ray takes this to mean that Tim is blaming him for being molested. Offended, Ray begins shooting, starting with Tim, to which Sydney comes in and starts shooting as well. After the massacre, Ray and Syd flee in Jason's convertible.
While driving through Missoula, Sydney suggests that she and Ray should stop the senseless killing and go take revenge on their fathers. Agreeing with Syd, Ray drives to his old house and confronts his father, holding him at gunpoint. He torments his father by playing Russian roulette, but Sydney grows impatient and ends up shooting the elder Donovan. After a brief fight and make-up session, the duo head to Spokane, Washington, to take revenge on Syd's father. Sydney confronts her father at his gas station and holds him at gunpoint.
Her father apologizes to her and claims that he has found God, but neither Syd nor Ray believe that what he did can be forgiven. Both Syd and Ray relentlessly beat him, but his daughter walks in. Sydney, believing that her father is molesting the girl, too, tries comforting her, while Ray takes the father to the back room and kills him.
The duo attempt to leave the gas station, but the BAU pull in, and get into a gun fight. Agent Derek Morgan ends up wounding Sydney, so they flee back into the station. While acting as a hostage negotiator, Morgan tells Raymond that Sydney murdered Amy, which finally pushes Raymond over the edge. He tearfully strangles Sydney to death, and then gets in his car and drives at full speed toward the BAU, forcing them to shoot him dead.
