~ Charles before he is shot by the FBI.

Charles Holcombe is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Legacy". He is a vigilante serial killer who preys on homeless people and prostitutes.

He was portrayed by Tahmus Rounds.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Little is known of Holcombe's background, what is known is that he was born in Missouri and his father owned a meat-packing facility. After his father's death, Holcombe became obsessed with cleaning the streets of Kansas City of homeless people and prostitutes. After inheriting his father's facility, he turned it into a death maze for his future victims. He bullied and intimidated his friend, Steven Foster, into helping him by abducting victims in the disguise of a social worker. Now with everything he needed, he put his plan into motion and claimed over 63 victims. Because his victims were vagrants, nobody, not even the police noticed their disappearance, and he was able to continue his murders with impunity.

"Legacy"[]

In 2007, Kansas City Police Department Detective Cal McGee, who is tasked with keeping an eye on the vagrants of Kansas City, receives a commendation from the city. Immediately afterwards, Charles writes an anonymous letter to Cal, claiming that he shouldn't be the one getting the credit. Along with the letter and him noticing the alarming amount of missing people, Cal decides to go against his boss's orders and contact the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) about the issue. In the cold open, Charles tortures and dismembers an old homeless man named Nate.

At first the BAU aren't able to get the Kansas City police chief to grant jurisdiction to them, but Agent Jennifer Jareau notices that the letter sent from Charles, is from Kansas City, Missouri, officially making it a federal case. The BAU profile the killer as a "house-cleaner", a type of serial killer who believes they are cleaning up the streets by killing homeless people, prostitutes, vagrants, and anyone else they view as "dirty" or a "waste of space".

Meanwhile, Holcombe kidnaps a prostitute named Maggie, and takes her to the facility. Upon waking up, she notices her shoes are missing and proceeds to walk to a big metal door. She tries to pull it open, but it's locked with a chain lock, and it bounces back and bashes her in the nose. Maggie, annoyed, backs up and runs towards the door pushing it open, but also falling in a room filled with broken glass on the floor.

Maggie uses her jacket to sweep away some of the glass and continues over into a white room, where Charles finally begins talking to her from a control room. He explains to her that she has two hours to make it out of the facility or she will be killed.

Despite several obstacles Maggie manages to reach the end of the maze. However, before she can escape Holcombe closes the door and renders her unconscious using gas. He straps her down and prepares to vivisect her, but is interrupted by the arrival of the BAU, who discovered his identity after apprehending Steven. Holcombe lifts his knife to them, but BAU Agents Derek Morgan, Aaron Hotchner and Emily Prentiss gun him down before he can attack them. As he dies, Maggie mockingly tells him that "I won".

Trivia[]

  • Charles is inspired by multiple real-life and fictional serial killers:
    • The late Stuart Alexander, a.k.a. "The Sausage King", who murdered three health inspectors and ground their remains into meat patties.
    • "The Cleveland Torso Killer", an unidentified serial killer of numerous transient people across Ohio, who were found dismembered in industrial drums in a local stream. Most of the victims haven't been identified to this day.
    • The late Robert Pickton, a.k.a. "The Pig Farmer Killer", a Canadian serial killer/rapist of women in prostitution who disappeared without a trace, and whose deaths were originally ignored by police. Pickton operated from his family's farm and fed the women's remains to his pigs so they were never found.
    • The late H. H. Holmes, a.k.a. "The Beast of Chicago", one of America's first serial killers with a rumor of having constructed a labyrinthine, torture-chamber filled "Murder Castle" to butcher victims in.
    • The late Maury Travis, an American serial killer/rapist of Black-American women in the Central U.S., who sent a letter insulting attention to the victims by the press, leading to his arrest. He hanged himself while in jail.
    • The late Robert Hansen, a.k.a. "The Butcher Baker", an Alaskan serial killer of women in prostitution, kidnapping them in his van, raping and torturing them, and then setting them off into woods to hunt them by shooting them with a rifle as part of a sadistic game.
    • The inventors of the deadly labyrinth in the Cube film franchise, where captives deduce the make up the cube and maneuver through twists, turns, and fatal traps to find their ways out.
    • John Kramer from the Saw franchise, as both their captives are kidnapped and taken to an unknown location filled with various traps, where they must go through extreme levels of pain in order to escape.
  • As shown with Maggie, Charles doesn't intend for his victims to escape. If they do make it to the end of his maze, he closes the door and knocks them out with gas. He just wants them to think they have a chance.
