Biography[]
Early lives[]
When the brothers' mother developed cancer, Ben, the middle child, went to medical school and graduated with the knowledge he hopped would buy time for their mother to live. But the family's debts increased, and the mother began to sick, so eldest brother Amajagh decided they needed extortion scams to acquire the funds they needed, believing couples arriving as tourists in Africa would be the bargaining chips for their families to pay under duress. Starting in 2012, the brothers traveled across Northern Africa for three years, kidnapping three different couples in three countries for ransom, with the occasional help of paid accomplices where the Tuareg people were stopping at merchant markets to trade.
The couples would be snatched at cruise ports, emails with photos of them sent to their families, and ransom demands in Bitcoin communicated through phone calls routed through darknet servers by Ben. Amajagh kept a steady pattern of killing the men a day into the negotiations, then the women four days in, even with the money being paid, by shooting them dead with a pistol to leave no witnesses. Their demands became more expensive with each abduction, and Cadi was the only one of the brothers who never knew the families were killed. John and Lindsey Trembles were killed in Tunisia for 50 grand, Alex and Holly Scott in Algeria for 75 grand, and Ezra and Allison Baumann in Libya for 200 grand.
"Citizens of the World"[]
In 2015, in Casablanca, Morocco, the brothers pay a con artist and a merchant for their complicity in kidnapping Peter and Kate Carson from the marketplace, for a 400 grand ransom. The cruise line calls the International Response Team of the FBI, Ben being alarmed when Agent Jack Garrett answers the phone. He refuses his request to speak with the Carsons, saying they'll die in three days without the ransom from their daughter Grace. While Ben informs Amajagh in a panic, Cadi brings the Carsons water and quiets them when they plead to be released.
As their mother grows sicker, the brothers pass onto Garrett a decreased timeline for the ransom. Amajagh panics, and Ben tries to quell him, but Amajagh insults him by saying medical school made Ben soft. When Cadi finds Peter's hands are callused from house building, he becomes sympathetic, something the Carsons noticed could happen due to his young age. Cadi says they should be released for being hard workers like them, Amajagh rejects the notion, and when Cadi tells Ben Amajagh should stop calling the shots, Amajagh hits Cadi. When Peter says violence against his family makes him a coward, Amajagh beats Peter with in an inch of his life in front of Kate. Amajagh gives Cadi the gun, finally admits he's been killing the families they extort from, and orders Cadi to kill Peter in the desert.
Cadi mercifully releases Peter into the care of a hospital. When he returns, Ben reports the ransom's been paid. When Amajagh moves to kill Kate, Cadi pleads for him not to, enough a distraction for the IRT and local police to storm their hideout. Garrett approaches the brothers unarmed while they hold Kate hostage, swearing to get their mother the care she needs if Kate is released unharmed. Ben's without hope, and Amajagh becomes unwaveringly desperate to the point he hits Cadi again for insisting they stop. When Amajagh refuses to hear Garret convince Ben to get them all to surrender, Amajagh moves for the gun laying on a table. Garrett gets their first and shoots Amajagh dead. The agents and police arrest Ben, and under Moroccan law, Cadi won't be charged due to his age not meeting criminal liability statutes.
Trivia[]
- The brothers are inspired by multiple real-life killer groups:
- Jurijus Kadamovas and Iouri Mikhel, a former Soviet Union-born duo responsible for kidnappings and murders of Americans for ransom once they entered into the country.
- The Briley Brothers, a trio of brothers, along with an accomplice, responsible for a killing spree that escalated to entire families, the brothers with similar levels of involvement based on age and facing similar legal penalties.
