Dr. Scum is the secondary antagonist of the Dog Man franchise.

He is an enigmatic green-skinned scientist and genius roboticist who, under the acquaintance of his company, regularly creates and invents evil and villainous robots, such as Robo-Chief or the Burgle Balls, to aid him in trying to destroy the titular character and his allies and ultimately conquer the world and finally show a threatening name to others rather than just being a simply "new" villain.

Biography[]

This never-before-seen bad guy may have a fresh, unfamiliar face, but his heart harbors a horror that could heighten him to a household name.
~ His official description in The Scarlet Shedder under the alias of Mysterious New Villain

History[]

Before the series[]

Even as a young baby, Dr. Scum was an assumed bully, as while he doesn't physically appear in a backstory Big Jim has, he is imagined to be in a Baby Jail. Due to this, it's possible that the children playing thought that the young Scum deserved to be imprisoned.

As an adult, he had created the company of Robo-Time Industries and had met the mayor before. The mayor had made him her assistant, and Dr. Scum made the mayor the second-in-command of Robo-Time Industries.

Dog Man[]

Dr. Scum first appeared in the first book of the Dog Man series as a supporting antagonist.

Apparently, he had been chosen to create Robo-Chief and had been working on him. Eventually, he finished and told the mayor after she threatened Chief that she would fire him and replace him with a robot. While the mayor went to the factory, she didn't notice Dog Man closely behind following her, and creating a video of her and Dr. Scum talking about the evil plan.

Then, the mayor sent a can of Invisible Spray, a spray can that turns anything sprayed with it invisible, to Petey the Cat, who sprayed it on himself to confuse the guards and escape jail. Then, news spread and the mayor collected a newspaper of Petey's recent escape. So, she takes it with her to the COPS station, with Dr. Scum and Dog Man closely behind. The mayor shows Chief the newspaper, and then fires him. Then, she orders Dr. Scum to send in Robo-Chief, who became the new chief.

Later, Dr. Scum and his bandit friends had created a series of illegal stores, with Robo-Chief guarding the cops so that they couldn't stop it. Meanwhile, Petey, still under the effects of the Invisible Spray, notices the evil stores and sabatoges them by going into the stores and pulling customer's pants up and down, scaring them away.

Dr. Scum learns about this and tells the mayor, who orders Robo-Chief to destroy Invisible Petey. However, Invisible Petey makes Robo-Chief destroy the stores, and eventually, himself. Dr. Scum tells the news of the destruction of Robo-Chief to the mayor, who angrily orders Dog Man to arrest Invisible Petey. Dog Man is able to wash the effects of the Invisible Spray off of Petey and arrest him.

At the ceremony to celebrate Dog Man for capturing Petey, Dog Man shows the video he had made of the mayor and Dr. Scum talking about their evil plan, causing the mayor to be arrested and sent to Mayor Jail. However, Dr. Scum was never arrested.

For Whom the Ball Rolls[]

Dr. Scum reappears in the seventh book, For Whom the Ball Rolls, as the main antagonist.

He was first seen when 80-HD went to go find where Petey's Dad is, where Dr. Scum gets annoyed by the fact that the narrarator calls him "new". However, he ignores it and shows the idea he had for his next invention: The Crime Crabs! While they are strong enough to destroy the world, Dr. Scum worries they won't be able to destroy Dog Man.

Later, a news report comes on with Dog Man getting scared by a ball that Chief sent to him, due to the fact Petey's son Li'l Petey had given Dog Man therapy to make sure that consequences would happen if he collected the ball. That gives Dr. Scum the idea to change the Crime Crabs to the Burgle Balls.

After a while, Dr. Scum unleashes the Burgle Balls, which rob many stores, including childish stores. When Dr. Scum sees what the Burgle Balls stole from the childish places, Dr. Scum immediately brings them back to steal something more "age-appropriate".

However, Petey's new invention, the Robo-Rat 2000, had eaten up all of the Burgle Balls, turning it into a robot caterpillar. Angrily, Dr. Scum goes into the cockpit of the Colossal-Bot 2000 and goes outside to battle the Very Hangry Ratterpillar. The Ratterpillar eats all of the Colossal-Bot 2000's arms. However, Dr. Scum unleashes a ray from the chest of the Colossal-Bot 2000 and zaps it on the Ratterpillar and Petey, trapping them into a makeshift charcoal chrysalis.

Then, Dr. Scum brings out the exoskeleton arms and kidnaps the heroes, who all scream for help. A prisoner named Big Jim hears this, and, due to the fact that he was hypnotized by Crunky and Bub to turn him into a cupcake themed superhero that only eats cupcakes, dresses as a superhero and starts eating cupcakes right next to the Colossal-Bot 2000.

Meanwhile in the chrysalis, Petey and the Ratterpillar, which had now turned into the Ratterfly with a ray at the end of the body, escapes and goes back to the Colossal-Bot 2000, where Petey zaps the Colossal-Bot 2000 with the ray, destroying the robot.

Dr. Scum then escapes the cockpit and tries to run away. However, he trips on Big Jim, where two cops come and congratulate Big Jim on saving the day, despite the fact that he didn't do anything. Then, Piggy falls down in Big Jim’s hand, so he gives Piggy to the cops to be arrested. Then, the cops wonder where Crunky and Bub are, to which Big Jim scratches his head, and finds Crunky and Bub on his finger afterwards, and he gives them to the cops to be arrested.

As a cop is sending Dr. Scum to Dude Jail, they walk by Dr. Scum's factory, where Dr. Scum asks if he can go to the bathroom. So, the cop, being really dumb, allows Dr. Scum to go inside the factory to use the bathroom. Inside, Dr. Scum unleashes an invention he had been working on: the A.I. Buddy! So, Dr. Scum sends a robot that looks like him and sends it outside to go to jail for him.

Mothering Heights[]

Dr. Scum reappears as a minor antagonist in a dream of Chief’s in the tenth book.

In the dream, Dr. Scum had somehow kidnapped Dog Man and a cop named Milly and threatened to kill them using the Robo-Shark Duck. However, a really buff Chief smashes into the wall and crushes Dr. Scum and tosses him away like a speck of dirt. Then, he puts his arm inside the Robo-Shark Duck's mouth and rips out its exoskeleton.

The Scarlet Shedder[]

Dr. Scum reappears in the twelfth book as one of the two main antagonists (alongside the Leader Dr. Scum A.I. Buddy).

On the day Chief was married, he had given a cop named Maude the ability to become temporary chief while he's gone for his honeymoon. However, she abuses her new power and, with the help of the corrupt judge, unlawfully arrests Dog Man for infinity years.

Dr. Scum uses this opportunity to blackmail Petey by forcing him to work for him so that he would give him an A.I. Buddy that looked like Dog Man so that he could swap it with Dog Man and have it go to jail instead. Petey signs a contract to join Robo-Time Industries, and Dr. Scum gives him the Dog Man A.I. Buddy. The next day, Petey goes to Dr. Scum's factory, where Dr. Scum moves his factory next to Petey's repairing lab.

Then, Dr. Scum creates a 3D face scanner for the public to use to mass-produce A.I. Buddies while they do important stuff (which is just playing on their phones). Soon enough, the entire population was filled with A.I. Buddies. That's when the Dr. Scum A.I. Buddy that was used to go to jail for Dr. Scum, who had destroyed and escaped Dude Jail, comes to the top of a hill and gives a speech to make all of the other A.I. Buddies to join together to make one massive robot. When Dog Man, Li'l Petey, 80-HD, and a tadpole named Molly try to destroy the robot, they get trapped by it.

Meanwhile, Petey had been hard at work on creating A.I. Buddies, and eventually slept on the job, where he has a dream of his deceased mother telling him to react the right way to any negative situation. So, Petey hijacks one of Dr. Scum's airplanes and uses the propeller to rip up the contract that he signed to join Robo-Time Industries and used it to go into the nose of the giant robot and turned it off. Then, Li’l Petey's new lightning mittens destroy the Dr. Scum A.I. Buddy, destroying the robot.

Dr. Scum gets mad at how his entire life's work was just blown up. Molly asks who Dr. Scum is, and he accidentally confesses that he was the villain of the entire book. Then, a cop comes out of nowhere and handcuffs Dr. Scum and takes him to an unknown jail, presumably shutting down his company.

Trivia[]

  • A running gag started in For Whom the Ball Rolls mistakes most everyone except for the narrator that Dr. Scum is a new character, considering the long absences he has from book to book.
    • Despite it being a running gag in most of his appearances since For Whom the Ball Rolls, a few books break this trend, such as Mothering Heights and Big Jim Begins, however this could be due to how minor of a character he is in it.
