“ | I must crush my fear! Now is the time... I must overcome it right now! That is what it means to live! | „ |
~ Diavolo |
“ | It is only the results that remain in this world! All the actions you take in a world where time is erased are meaningless! | „ |
~ Diavolo to Bruno Bucciarati. |
“ | No one can escape the fate that was chosen for them. All that remains is the result, where you will all perish. Eternal greatness exists only within myself. Sing a song of sorrow in a world where time has vanished. | „ |
~ Diavolo speaking in Italian in the second opening of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, "Traitor's Requiem." |
Diavolo, also known as the Boss, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Kars) of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, being the overarching antagonist of Part III: Stardust Crusaders and the main antagonist of Part V: Golden Wind.
As the discoverer of the Stand Arrows, Diavolo is responsible for the proliferation of Stand Users in the world, including the likes of Jotaro Kujo and Dio Brando/DIO. Additionally, as the founder and supreme leader of the drug-dealing crime syndicate Passione, he serves as Giorno Giovanna and Bruno Bucciarati's superior and greatest enemy, as they both desire to dismantle his drug empire due to the harm it causes to Naples. Diavolo is also the father of Trish Una, and commands Bucciarati's Gang to bring her to him whilst keeping her safe from the traitorous La Squadra Esecuzioni.
Diavolo is secretly the alter of Vinegar Doppio, and is a Stand User who wields the incredibly powerful King Crimson.
He was voiced by Mitsuru Miyamoto in the PS2 game adaption of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Toshiyuki Morikawa in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, and Katsuyuki Konishi (who has also voiced Heracles in Record of Ragnarok) in the anime and all subsequent appearances. In the English dub of the anime, he was voiced by Kellen Goff, who also voices Funtime Freddy, Freddy Fazbear, Fiddlesticks, Kai Chisaki, Fat Thief, and the Techno-Pirate.
Biography[]
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind[]
Much of Diavolo's origins and past is left in mystery. He was supernaturally born in an all-female prison in Italy in the summer of 1967 to a two year pregnancy, with no possible subjects for a father within the prison. As his mother still had several years left in prison, Diavolo was adopted by a priest and moved to Sardinia, where he would grow up.
When Diavolo was a young man, he met and had a relationship with a girl named Donatella Una. He presented himself to her as "Solido Naso", showing an obsession with erasing his past and identity even before he was the boss of Passione. Diavolo unknowingly had a daughter with Donatella, named Trish Una.
One day, the priest who raised him found Diavolo's biological mother mysteriously hidden underneath the floor with her mouth and eyes sewn shut. Later, a fire would start and kill several people, with the priest and Diavolo himself listed among the dead. Diavolo is shown to have directly killed the priest himself in the anime, and it is implied Diavolo started the fire himself to fake his death.
For reasons unknown, Diavolo would then join an excavation in Egypt. He would there discover a box with six arrows, which intrigued him due to the power they gave off to him. He would take the arrows to Enya Geil and sold five of the six arrows to her. Enya would later introduce the arrows to people such as Dio Brando and Yoshihiro Kira, which would cause the spread and increase of Stand users around the world.
Diavolo would then found Passione and use his remaining arrow to create Stand users within his own organization, most likely creating his own Stand King Crimson with the arrow as well.
In 2001, Giorno Giovanna, a teenage Stand user, caught wind of the large-scale drug trade occurring in the crime syndicate. Due to Giorno killing Leaky Eye Luca, Diavolo sends Bruno Bucciarati after him, resulting in him joining Bucciarati's group. Soon after, Diavolo discovers he has a daughter, who is being hunted by traitorous forces inside Passione. With the death of the Capo Polpo, the Capo Pericolo gains the assignment that is soon given to Bucciarati's group, to protect Trish and bring her to him.
After this, Diavolo then traveled to various locales, dropping off items there, such as Mr. President's key in Pompeii or Coco Jambo in Naples. Giorno and his friends manage to collect each of these items, and Bucciarati, along with Trish, seek out the boss. Kidnapping Trish, Bruno chased after Diavolo to save her, getting a quick defeat as a result. However, Diavolo has to let the group escape from the scene, after all of Bruno's team shows up, but not before marking all of them as traitors.
Diavolo then orders his alter and subordinate, Vinegar Doppio, to check out the house Donatella once lived in, Diavolo coming back briefly to kill a fortune teller who harassed Doppio and nearly gouging the eye of a greedy taxi driver who did so as well, along the way. Risotto Nero planned to try and kidnap Trish around this time, and when he finds out Doppio has a stand, he attacks. He nearly kills him with his stand, but Doppio manages to gain the upper hand with Diavolo's help at the end, ending with Risotto dying to Aerosmith's bullets. Weakened from his wounds, Diavolo then devours a frog and drinks the blood from a child he kidnapped, regaining his lost iron, before using the kid's uniform to fatally ambush Abbacchio successfully.
Some time later, Diavolo gives Doppio back control to visit the house, later changing his goals to fight the heroes in Rome alongside Cioccolata and Secco. However, the latter holds Doppio hostage, forcing Bruno to save him. Using his soul to fool Bruno, he makes Bruno reveal who was helping him and allows him to sneak into the Coliseum.
When he sneaks in, he warnsDoppio to remain cautious, with their mysterious aide revealed to be a crippled Polnareff, who Diavolo brutally attacked before the events of the story. Revealing himself to Polnareff, he then attacks him, killing his body. However, as a last resort, Silver Chariot becomes Chariot Requiem, swapping Diavolo's soul into the body of Mista alongside Trish, resulting anger from Doppio in Buccirati's body being shot at resulting in Narancia's demise.
A restored Giorno takes the Arrow, as his group go after Chariot Requiem, with Diavolo trying to ruin their plans. Once the heroes realize this scheme, Diavolo attacks, taking full control of Mista's body. With this, he deduces that Chariot Requiem's shadow is parallel to where it is, striking behind him to ruin the soul swapping stand. Diavolo tries to make a grab for the Arrow, but Giorno uses his own severed hand to cut the arrow short, making Diavolo miss his prize. Realizing Trish and her stand is fighting him, he rips his hand straight through her body, mortally wounding his own daughter. Diavolo tries to stab himself with the Arrow again only to fail, with Trish being saving by Bruno, sacrificing himself to undo Chariot Requiem's mischief.
Diavolo attempts to run away, but when pointed out by Trish, he attacks Giorno, this causing his downfall as Giorno turns his stand into Gold Experience Requiem. Diavolo tries to kill Giorno, but is stopped by Gold Experience Requiem's ability, nullifying King Crimson. Gold Experience Requiem attacks him, destroying his stand and sending Diavolo reeling towards a river.
This attack starts Diavolo's infamous death loop, with Diavolo destined to die over and over, only to "return to zero" right before his death by having anything he does in this state cease to exist once he is revived once more. On-screen, Diavolo is stabbed, autopsied alive, and hit by a car. He was last seen begging a child not to come closer due to Diavolo never knowing how he would die, a far cry from the once proud, dangerous mafia boss he once knew, with Diavolo dying repeatedly forever.
In Purple Haze Feedback it is revealed that Giorno managed to convince all of Passione that he was the real boss, and gained more power by joining up with the Speedwagon Foundation.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven[]
Diavolo shows up in chapter 11, revealing his intention of defeating Giorno first to the heroes. After he is defeated by Giorno and Trish, Diavolo surrenders his Corpse Part to them and leaves.
Unlike his canon counterpart, he seems to have a sense of honor, something that the original version lacks.
Jorge Joestar[]
Diavolo serves as a supporting antagonist in the light novel. Like his canon counterpart, he wields the mighty King Crimson. However, instead of Vinegar Doppio, his alter is Giorno Giovanna.
Personality[]
“ | Fascinating how the past can wriggle its way back, not matter how many pieces I may cut it up into. You amaze me, I'd never thought I would deal with the same vermin more than once! | „ |
~ Diavolo to Polnareff. |
Proud, obsessive, ruthless and dangerous, Diavolo's personality makes for an easily intimidating nature. Having an extreme desire to erase his tracks, Diavolo will go to any length to see himself become an enigma. Due to his belief that the past and its mistakes are trials that he must defeat in order to grow as a human being, he is consistently paranoid and fixated on maintaining his anonymity by any means necessary. To that regard, he consistently takes measures to conceal his appearance and identity. Using Vinegar Doppio to hide himself, he is hinted to constantly travel around Italy, staying in hotel rooms and motels to sleep.
Diavolo's obsession with remaining in absolute anonymity is one that he engages in via callously violent methods. He will not hesitate to ruthlessly hunt any individual who discovers his past before disposing of them. This is prominently displayed in his attempts to murder his own biological daughter, Trish Una, in order to conceal any possible connections and links to his past. Another notable example of this is with Sorbet and Gelato, who he had Cioccolatta viciously murder as a warning to the Squadra Esecuzioni. Despite his brutal nature, however, he finds Cioccolata and Secco's methods to be deplorable, and thus only calls on them when he has to. However, this is likely due to how the two tend to leave a lot of bloodshed in their wake, rather than their deeds.
One of Diavolo's prominent traits is his immense pride and confidence in himself and his Stand. Due to King Crimson's abilities that allow him to foresee the "pitfalls" of the future alongside nullifying any events that would harm him, Diavolo tends to proclaim and boast about his inherent superiority over others. Because of his aforementioned fixation on conquering the past, Diavolo is utterly convinced that he is fated to remain at the apex as an Emperor. His prideful nature is also mostly thanks to his strange birth, the Arrows, and his position of power in Passione. Besides his belief in erasing the past and its mistakes, Diavolo is also primarily motivated by a philosophy that results are the only things that matter in the world. This is echoed by and perhaps the source of King Crimson's defining ability to erase everything save for the outcomes that arise from situations Diavolo finds himself in, something that the crime lord utilizes to his advantage via selecting outcomes that personally benefit himself.
However, despite his attempts to ensure his supremacy and complete anonymity, Diavolo ironically engages in actions and behaviors that sabotages himself in the long-term; this is in part due to the numerous impulsive acts he engages in throughout the story. Diavolo's obsession with concealing his identity is maintained through horrifically violent methods that inevitably alienate his subordinates; for example, La Squadra Esecuzioni ends up betraying him after the crime boss brutally murders Sorbet and Gelato for attempting to unveil his identity, as well as the fact that Diavolo continues to compensate them quite poorly for their assassinations. Additionally, Diavolo's desire for control over Italy via the drug trade, alongside his ruthless attempt to murder Trish Una in an attempt to erase all traces to his past, eventually leads to Bruno Bucciarati and his team rebelling against Diavolo out of disgust for the crime boss's actions. The attempt to kill his own daughter ends up backfiring on him as well, since Trish Una was able to awaken her Stand, Spice Girl, and pose a greater threat to his rule while allying with Team Bucciarati.
Finally, his sense of pride and doubtless belief of being the Emperor at the apex is what ultimately results in his crushing defeat at the hands of Giorno Giovanna, as the former refused to engage in a tactical retreat to replenish his strength in favor of relentlessly pursuing Giovanna and his allies, all despite the fact that Giorno had already attained Golden Experience Requiem and besting him in combat moments prior. His callous and impulsive nature, alongside his obsession with controlling Fate, eventually seal his doom: Giorno and Golden Experience Requiem is able to nullify King Crimson's abilities alongside engaging in a completely one-sided battle that ensures Diavolo's demise, where he subsequently suffers a fate far worse than death in the form of repeatedly dying for all of eternity without undergoing the final result. Giorno is thus able to usurp Diavolo's leadership of Passione while leading it in an honorable way and assuming his identity as the Boss, thus ironically ensuring that Diavolo was able to remain completely anonymous while having his tyrannical reign over Italy permanently quashed.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | When King Crimson wields its extraordinary power, time as we know it flits away and all memories formed therein completely cease to exist. Clouds are torn asunder and know not why. The flickering flame is blotted away without any consciousness of its demise. All that remains are consequences. The omnipotence of my time-obliterating powers renders all actions futile! Only I have the ability to respond to these actions! I can foretell the exact flavor of your intentions! Now feel the power of King Crimson! | „ |
~ Diavolo on King Crimson. |
Diavolo's Stand, King Crimson, has the power to “erase” time. To simplify it, he activates his power, which lasts for ten seconds. During this time, Diavolo becomes completely intangible and untouchable by his enemies. He can't attack his opponents, as he and his stand will simply phase through solid objects (though this is inconsistent, as Diavolo chopped off Trish's hand without Bucciarati noticing), but he can position himself to attack his target once time resumes to normal.
Anyone besides Diavolo himself will do what they were predestined to do (for example, if someone wants to cross the road and King Crimson's erasing time ability is activated, this person will walk to the other side as they wished to do). After his spell ends, anything that happened during the time his power was active will simply be erased out of existence, like it never happened (in the perspective of the person that crossed the street, they will immediately "teleport" to the other side, because the moment they walked will be erased from the universe). This not only will leave his enemy disoriented, but also allow Diavolo to predict his opponent's moves and not only dodge it, but also position himself to counter the attack.
Diavolo also has access to the sub-Stand Epitaph, allowing him to see ten seconds into the future to see if he should erase that time. When King Crimson is in effect, Diavolo's Epitaph allows him to see the movements of his opponents that will happen in the future in the form of a sketch, complementing his primary ability. In summary, Diavolo's King Crimson is the power to remove the cause but maintain the effect.

Simply put, your past self saw a future version. Now behold, know the almighty power of King Crimson! I obliterated time then leapt beyond it! It doesn't matter who it is, I shall never allow any cretin to threaten my eternal transcendence. Not. Ever. The time has come for you to fade away! Bucciarati, your mission as protector has been terminated. Now may the fires of Hell embrace you. | „ |

Trivia[]
- Diavolo's name means "devil" in Italian, rather befitting for his demonic motifs.
- Diavolo's namesake, if food theme naming is anything to go by (Such as Risotto Nero, and Cioccolatta), is subtly derives from an Italian style cooking centered on Fra Diavolo Sauce (Named after the nickname of Michele Pezza, Italian guerilla leader (Lit. Brother Devil)) that used for making pasta and seafood or Pizza alla Diavola, a type of pizza topped with spicy salami. This is supported by the fact that Diavolo's alter ego Vinegar Doppio is also named after Italian food.
- On a related note to the trivia above, Diavolo being named after a spicy Italian pizza fits perfectly with his (and King Crimson's) aggressive traits.
- Diavolo's Stand is named after the band King Crimson, in which two of its songs could reflect his character. "21st Century Schizoid Man" could reflect his brutal personality as a result of his paranoia from trying to keep his past a secret and his bloodthirsty nature, while "In the Court of the Crimson King" could reflect his goal of obtaining the Requiem arrow to gain total control over the passage of fate.
- Its substand, Epitaph is also named after the eponymous King Crimson song from the album In the Court of the Crimson King.
- When Silver Chariot Requiem swapped everyone's souls, Diavolo appeared as King Crimson, speaking to everyone while manifested as the Stand. This suggests King Crimson was always a latent Stand with a strong will of its own, much like Cheap Trick, and the arrow only allowed him full manifestation of his powers.
- It is an Internet meme in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fandom that some people do not understand how King Crimson works due to the complex nature of its ability. Some fans explain King Crimson's power by comparing it to a video editing software, others jokingly mimic King Crimson's ability in their explanation by saying things along the lines of "King Crimson works by- ...and that's how King Crimson works", and some just straight up reply with "It just works".
- A reocurring joke in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fandom regarding Diavolo is that any scenario, no matter how funny or wacky it is can be considered canon as long as Diavolo dies in the end. This is a joke on the fact that, since Diavolo dies infinite deaths after being trapped in the loop by Gold Experience Requiem, any death scenario is likely to happen.
- According to JOJO A-GO!GO!, Diavolo is Hirohiko Araki's fourth favorite character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
