~ Enya Geil to DIO. |
Enya Geil (Enyaba in some English translations), also known as Enya the Hag, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Enrico Pucci) of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, serving as the secondary antagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part III: Stardust Crusaders.
She was the mother of J. Geil and the one who awoke DIO's Stand, serving as his advisor and right-hand woman up until her death. It is later revealed that she had a key role in developing the Stand population, and had acquired the bow and arrow from Diavolo. Even after her death, her actions had an impact on the entire series.
In Japanese, she was voiced by Rika Fukami in the OVA, Sanae Takagi in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future, Katsue Miwa in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle, and Reiko Suzuki in the anime. In English, she was voiced by Elaine Clark in the OVA, and Barbara Goodson (under the alias of Janis Carroll) (who also voiced Mother Talzin in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rita Repulsa in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Prince Sprocket and Orbus in Power Rangers Zeo and Mandilok in Power Rangers Wild Force) in the anime.
Biography[]
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders[]
Enya was an old Egyptian woman who worked as a fortune-teller. One day, a young man called Diavolo came to her with a collection of strange arrows. These arrows were capable of giving Stand powers to anyone pierced by them. Enya bought all the arrows from him, except for the one that he used to build the mafia family Passione. Enya gave one of the arrows to an acquaintance named Yoshihiro Kira, and kept the others.
One day, one of the arrows she kept started reacting to something. She followed to where the arrow was pointing, where she found a strange man of stunning beauty. The arrow immediately stabbed into him of its own accord, granting him the Stand known as The World. The man introduced himself as DIO and Enya started following and worshiping him as the destined ruler and One True God of the world. When DIO told her about his rivals, the Joestars, Enya responded by sending mercenaries and assassins to eliminate them for her beloved master. Among these stand-using mercenaries was Enya's son, J. Geil, who teamed up with Hol Horse.
By the time the Stardust Crusaders had reached Pakistan, all of the assassins she had sent were lost, either killed or released from DIO's mind control. This included her son, who was killed by Polnareff as revenge for raping and murdering his little sister. With her son's death, Enya felt the same pain as him, even having holes open up in her face in the same places he had been stabbed. Losing her mind, Enya decided to enter battle herself, with her personal goal being to kill Polnareff and avenge the "innocent and pure-hearted angel" she believed her son was.
Justice[]
Enya confronted the group in Pakistan, in an abandoned cemetary which she shrouded in fog and used sorcery to reshape it into a small town. The Crusaders were immediately put off by how quiet and unfriendly the town was compared to others they had visited, with the people refusing to lift a finger even after a murder victim was discovered.
Enya made her appearance then, attempting to trick them into believing she was just a local hotel owner. Though Jotaro was immediately suspicious of her calling him Mr. Joestar when he didn't think anyone had said that name, Polnareff believed her wholeheartedly and tried to become friends with her, asking about her family and telling her she could think of him as her son.
As the Crusaders went to make their rooms, Enya was visited by Hol Horse. Seeing him, Enya began crying and asking if he was close to J. Geil. Hol Horse lied, saying that he was best friends with her son when they were really more just allies. Enya told him that was exactly what she wanted to hear, since it meant she could kill him for betraying her son to die. Though Hol Horse tried to explain he hadn't been there when J. Geil was killed, Enya wouldn't hear it and attacked him with a pair of scissors, cutting his wrist. She then activated her stand, Justice, turning the tiny scissor stab into a gaping hole and flowing into Hol Horse's body. Hol Horse tried to use Emperor to defend himself, but Enya's stand controlled him, making him shoot himself in the mouth instead.
Just then Polnareff showed up again, having heard the commotion. Enya hid Hol Horse's body and tried to shoo Polnareff away, but Hol Horse wasn't quite dead; he had managed to release his stand just before the bullet could make contact, and he called out to get Polnareff's attention. At that moment, Enya revealed that she was J. Geil's mother and attacked Polnareff as well, backed up by all of the townspeople who she revealed were corpses being manipulated like puppets by Justice, a stand made of fog that could flow into peoples' bodies and control them. Polnareff had no choice but to flee from the woman.
Polnareff ran into the bathroom by mistake, and prepared to make his final stand there, but the sound of his pursuers stopped. After a moment, Polnareff took a look through the keyhole to see if they were still there. He discovered to his horror they'd been waiting outside the whole time. One of the zombies shot its tongue through the keyhole, stabbing Polnareff in the tongue. With a wound on him now, Justice's fog entered Polnareff's body and forced him to open the door. Enya then proceeded to humiliate him, ordering her zombie minions to laugh as she made Polnareff lick the toilet boil.
At that moment Jotaro showed up, looking for Polnareff. Enya told him to check the bathroom, then tried to stab him in the back with her scissors, but he turned back to her suddenly, making her trip and almost stab herself. Enya asked Jotaro what was the matter, calling him by his name, and Jotaro told her that proved she was their enemy. Having been suspicious at being called Joestar earlier, he'd signed the hotel guestbook with the name Qtaro Kujo, and had told everyone else to not use his name, so the only way she would know his name was Jotaro was if she already knew who he was. Revealed, Enya decided to attack him at full force.
Zombies spilled into the room and Star Platinum sent them all flying with a flurry of punches. Jotaro tried to have Star Platinum attack Justice as well, but it was no good. Enya explained, Justice was made of fog which can't be punched or cut with a sword or shot with a gun. Just then, a baby zombie which Jotaro had missed earlier stabbed him in the leg with its tongue. Hol Horse and Polnareff, who had both crawled into the room, reacted in terror that Jotaro had been defeated as he was the only one they'd thought would stand a chance here.
Jotaro reacted calmly, saying it didn't matter that he'd been struck as he was going to defeat Enya before she could draw another breath. Enya laughed and said that she was going to go ahead and take a breath now, but suddenly found herself unable to do so. Star Platinum was sucking in all the air, creating a vacuum to suffocate the hag, rendering her unconscious. They decide to take Enya captive in the hope of interrogating her about DIO.
Polnareff tried to get the others to give him some mouthwash to disinfect his mouth while Joseph teased him about licking the toilet. As they went outside the hotel, everything changed. The fog cleared, revealing the town as an abandoned cemetary in the desert, and the hotel itself nothing more than a crumbling ruin.
As the sun rose, Hol Horse stole their car and drove away, calling back to thank them for saving him but to tell them he's sticking with DIO after all. He warned them to kill Enya, or else they will discover just how horrifying DIO really is.
The Lovers[]
The Crusaders took Enya's carriage to Karachi, Pakistan where Joseph Joestar went to buy doner kebabs for everyone. As he turned back to the carriage he was shocked to find Enya awake and staring at him with a horrified expression. Even though the kebab vender was wearing sunglasses and a keffiyah, Enya recognized him as Steely Dan, another of DIO's assassins, who was usually tasked with assassinating other members of the organization who had gone traitor. Enya asked why he was there and insisted she had never and would never sell out DIO to anyone.
Enya's face exploded in a burst of tentacles. Dan explained that this was the mature form of DIO's flesh buds, and that this was also the fate that would have befallen Kakyoin and Polnareff if the flesh buds hadn't been removed from them. Enya refused to believe that DIO would have planted a flesh bud in her, saying this was all Dan's doing instead. Joseph tried to interroate her before the end, saying that DIO had betrayed her after she'd entrusted him with the lives of her and her son, but she still refused to believe that DIO would betray her, and died saying she would also never betray him.
The OVA[]
In the 1993 OVA, Enya's character is a bit different. She spends most of her time in the form of a young and scantily clad woman, looking much like Nena. She fights the heroes in this form, and after being defeated she comes back in her true form and joins the Stardust Crusaders, though this is only a trick to get them to let their guards down so she can kill them. Jotaro reveals her using the same cigarette trick he used to reveal Impostor Captain Tennille (who doesn't appear in the OVA) and he defeats her.
After her defeat in the OVA, DIO's flesh bud activates on its own and rips her apart. Steely Dan does not appear in the OVA.
Legacy[]
Despite her death, Enya's legacy influences many of the later story arcs. It is revealed in Diamond is Unbreakable that DIO's stand was not something he was born with but was given to him by Enya using one of the stand arrows. Other arrows were later passed on to individuals such as Mansaku Nijimura (and later inherited by his son Keicho Nijimura) and Yoshihiro Kira.
It is also revealed in Vento Aureothat Enya obtained the arrows from Diavolo, in return for a huge sum of money that he used along with the one arrow that he kept to help him start up the crime family Passione.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven[]
Enya appears as an NPC in the story mode of the game, aiding Heaven Ascension DIO in conquering every possible reality.
She appeared often throughout the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable timeline. After Koichi Hirose and Rohan Kishibe defeat Yukako Yamagishi (who was brainwashed by Over Heaven DIO), Yukako is then teleported away, and it's unknown if she ever escaped the mind control, which makes Koichi sad. Then Enya is teleported into place, with her summoning Egyptian zombies to attack the heroes. She is lastly ordered by Heaven Ascension DIO to give the remaining pieces of the Saint's Corpse that he stole from the heroes to his subordinates.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | Just one little wound is all I need... then Justice will do the rest! | „ |
~ Enya |
Enya's stand, Justice, is a stand made entirely of fog. She can control the fog, and can use it to also control others. If a person is wounded, her stand turns their wound into a gaping hole which it uses to flow into their body, allowing Enya to freely control the person's actions. Enya can also use this to control corpses.
Enya also possesses sorcerous powers, being able to read fortunes using tarot cards or to scry on distant people and objects. She can create complex illusions such as making a desolate cemetary look like a town and a crumbling ruin look like a functional hotel, though it's unclear if this is a function of her stand, Justice, or if this is something she can do on her own.
In the OVA for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, she is shown to be able to reshape her own body as well to look young and beautiful, with her young self looking much like the disguised Nena. As with the other illusions and transformations she does, it is also unclear if this Justice's doing, or the result of some other magic she knows.
Trivia[]
- Enya is named after the Irish singer of the same name.
- Enya's Stand is named after the 11th tarot card of the major arcana, Justice, which symbolizes consequences and a need to recognize them.
- The light novel JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Over Heaven reveals a few things about Enya that may or may not be considered canon.
- DIO states that he would have considered starting a family with Enya if she was younger.
- DIO's flesh buds were a concept created by Enya.
- Enya suggested eliminating Holy Kujo to break the Joestar Group mentally.
- DIO respected Enya as a subordinate, as he praised her deviousness and saw her death as a huge loss to his organization.
- The flesh bud implanted into Enya caused her to not be as effective as she would be without it, explaining her performance against the Joestar Group.
- In the OVA, Enya mentions J. Geil's father, revealing that he was a Stand User as well, and that his ability was to control the spirit of one person.
- Also in the OVA, Enya is defeated after Jotaro used the cigarette "trick" he used against Captain Tennille in the manga.
- Enya is arguably one of the most influential antagonists in the entire JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, being the reason why DIO awakened his Stand. It is heavily implied that most of DIO's knowledge about Stands come from Enya's teachings, meaning that if it wasn't for Enya, DIO and none of the Joestars would have awakened their Stands nor would DIO know about "Heaven". This would make her the main reason for the ending of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean.
- Enya is the only non-main antagonist to have major influence and be mentioned outside of their respective part.
- Enya is one of the few enemy Stand Users in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders to actually die after their defeat, instead of simply "retiring".
