The Closed are an unnamed species of near-humans from an unknown world, who immigrated to Carnelion IV, and are an overarching antagonist of the 2016 canon comic book miniseries Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin. Physically, they resemble humans, but have three horizontal slits in place of ears. Their warriors commonly sport blue tattoos on their faces. Grecker, a Closed warrior, is one of the miniseries' main antagonists.
History[]
In the time of the Old Republic, members of this species were attacked by a Sith warrior, the event recorded in a holographic tablet. At another unknown point in time, they immigrated to Carnelion IV alongside humans, creating an advanced society, but remaining outside Republic jurisdiction. Generations before 32 BBY, for reasons unknown, a violent civil war broke out between this species, now known as the Closed, and the humans, who became known as the Open. The war destroyed their civilization and filled their cities with toxic gases, which became known as the Celadon Sea, driving survivors to the mountains. Ever since, the Open and Closed continued to fight, and blamed each other for the war. While the Closed claimed the Open created the Celadon Sea, the Open blamed the Closed for it, and claimed that the Closed were driving the planet to ruin. As the Closed had lost all advanced technology in the war, they resorted to using primitive ballistic weaponry and gasbag-powered airships, and soon discovered a number of small artifacts of the pre-war civilization, dubbed "skygifts" being sent by a lone human survivor in the ruins. Seeking to rid themselves of the previous civilization, the Closed destroyed all skygifts they came across, and remained suspicious of pre-war technology.
In 29 BBY, the lone survivor, Sera, managed to send a message to the Galactic Republic, and two human Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi and his padawan Anakin, crash-landed on Carnelion IV to investigate. They soon came across Grecker, a Closed warrior, in an aerial battle with two Open warriors, Mother Pran and her assistant Kolara, seeing Grecker shoot the Opens down. However, the Jedi saved the Opens, and then brought down Grecker's airship, although he bailed out just in time. After Obi-Wan and Anakin managed to briefly pause the hostilities between the two sides to demand answers, they managed to get Grecker and Pran to work together upon telling them of receiving a message, as both realized it could've only been sent by Sera, and both sought to kill her. Eventually, Pran betrayed Obi-Wan and Grecker by kidnapping Anakin for his technological expertise, abandoning the airship with him and Kolara while leaving Obi-Wan and Grecker to fight an onslaught of Fishers, mutated survivors who were stranded in the Celadon Sea. After the airship crashed, Grecker ranted about the treachery of the Open while he and Obi-Wan made their way through a ruined city with gasmasks before finding Sera's fortress, where they were attacked by Carnelion dragons, prompting Grecker to fire off a flare to attract Closed soldiers. While Obi-Wan fended the dragons off, Grecker managed to get inside the fortress and drew a flare gun on Sera, intending to leave Obi-Wan to die, but Sera shot Grecker in the chest first and let Obi-Wan in.
Within the fortress, Sera showed Obi-Wan the recording of Closed being slaughtered by Sith, thinking that the Sith warrior in the image was a Jedi, and believed that the Jedi would destroy the hostiles on both sides. While Obi-Wan was inside, a squad of Closed soldiers arrived at the fortress, meeting Obi-Wan when he exited. However, Grecker, who had survived being shot, ordered the Closed to kill Obi-Wan and burn the fortress down, prompting the Closed to immediately open fire on Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan was able to evade the Closed, just as Mother Pran returned with a squad of Open soldiers in fully-functional war mechs, rebuilt by Anakin, quickly overwhelming and killing many Closed, including Grecker, as other Open soldiers without mechs rushed the fortress and engaged surviving Closed soldiers in close combat. With the Closed off of him, Obi-Wan met up with a freed Anakin and got back into Sera's fortress, sending a message to the Republic claiming that the planet's atmosphere had a high supply of valuable tibanna gas. Shortly afterwards, ships of the Republic Judicial Forces arrived in the sky, quickly stopping the battle outside, deploying officers and Jedi to deal with the wounded. Obi-Wan explained to Anakin that while the Republic probed the atmosphere for the gas, they would ensure all fighting on the ground was halted, and hoped that the forced standstill would make the Open and Closed decide if they preferred peace or war. It is unknown what became of the Closed or their relation to the Open after the Republic personnel left, or during the Imperial era.
