Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Adventure

The Final Egg (ファイナルエッグ Fainaru Eggu?) is an Action Stage that appears in Sonic Adventure, its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and the 2010 remaster of the game. It is the tenth and final Action Stage as Sonic, the third and final Action Stage as Amy, and the first Action Stage as Gamma. The Final Egg is Dr. Robotnik's secret base of operations in the Mystic Ruins. As with most other Action Stages in its games, the Final Egg has different level designs for each character, which have three optional missions each.

Description[]

Sonic Adventure DX Final Egg outside

Final Egg as seen from outside, from Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

The Final Egg is a massive base built by Dr. Robotnik. It can be acceded from the Mystic Ruins Jungle Area. From the outside, it looks like a tall, massive, silver cylinder with a yellow circle that has the Robotnik Empire symbol on it. This cylinder stands on top of a giant, disc-shaped metropolis that is glowing red and has many yellow lights illuminating the sky above. To enter the Final Egg, there is a long bridge that extends from the base itself to an area near the ancient ruins.

When the playable character has entered the Final Egg, they will find themselves inside a giant, spherical, double-story room with some machinery, including some tubes where Metal Sonic and Mecha Sonic Mark III are stored, and the machine in which E-102 Gamma was awakened for the first time. To enter the Action Stage itself as Sonic and Amy, the player has to open a door with three yellow switches on the sides, with six in total. When the player presses a switch, others will either activate or deactivate, similar to the Lights Out video game. To open the door, all six switches must be activated. With Gamma on the other hand, the player has to simply enter a standard door that is automatically opened when the robot approaches it. While Gamma can also open the door with the six switches, he is unable to access that door.

The inside of the Final Egg itself has an inconsistent look, though it is overall a dark, massive base with lots of machinery. In most sections in particular, the walls consist of metallic plaques with some chain link-patterned fences that allow the player to see the outside, which is just a pitch-black background. Platforms here are yellow with small fences on the sides and a metallic grill on the center.

According to Sonic, the Final Egg "smells like oil".[1]

Story[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

After exiting Lost World, Sonic sees Dr. Robotnik run to the Final Egg. He thus gives chase to him in the base. The hedgehog eventually encounters the doctor piloting his Egg Viper. In the end though, Sonic manages to destroy the Viper.

Amy Rose[]

Whilst trying to find Birdie's siblings, Amy and Birdie both infiltrate the Final Egg. There, they have to flee from E-100 ZERO, who is still hot on their trails. Though they manage to barely escape from the base in one piece, they find no trace of Birdie's siblings. Amy thus decides to keep looking.

E-102 Gamma[]

The Final Egg in particular would be where Dr. Robotnik awakened E-102 Gamma. After having him practice in the base's shooting range, the doctor makes Gamma fight his older "brother", E-101 Beta.

In the Sonic X anime series, the Final Egg was Dr. Eggman's hidden base in the Mystic Ruins. After the Egg Carrier's crash and an unsuccessful attempt to destroy Station Square, the doctor returned to the Final Egg to devise a new strategy. Sonic, however, followed his nemesis to his fortress. There, the hedgehog destroyed the gate leading into the Final Egg. After then avoiding numerous traps set by Eggman, he reached the center of the Final Egg. There, he fought the Egg Viper, eventually defeating the doctor and destroying the Final Egg.

Battle For Angel Island[]

After Dr. Eggman had lost his memory and took up a new life as the kindly "Mr. Tinker", Rough the Skunk and Tumble the Skunk kidnapped the doctor from Windmill Village and brought him to the Final Egg. There, Dr. Starline began the process of restoring Eggman's memories.[2] After three sessions however, Starline had failed to make much process with Eggman. This made Rough and Tumble grow impatient with Starline, who had promised that Eggman would make them weapons to use against Sonic. After a damaged Metal Sonic arrived in the Final Egg however, Eggman regained his memories and old personality upon seeing Metal Sonic. Taking control of the assembled group of villains, Eggman was brought up to speed by Starline while repairing Metal Sonic. Introduced to Rough and Tumble as well, Eggman agreed to make them weapons to use against Sonic once he heard that the skunk brothers hated the hedgehog. After hearing about Starline's Warp Topaz as well (which did not interest Eggman), Starline provided Eggman with the seven Chaos Emeralds as his "apprenticeship application". Impressed, Eggman took Starline in as his new lackey.[3]

After reviewing Neo Metal Sonic's past activities in the Final Egg, Eggman went to work on his Metal Virus and assigned Starline to keep Sonic occupied while he got ready. Meanwhile, Eggman sorted out a misunderstanding Rough and Tumble had about their weapon schematics.[3]

Infection[]

While Eggman worked on his Metal Virus, Starline would report that he had baited Sonic and Tails to Windmill Village with a letter, as Eggman had instructed. Although Starline wondered why they had to use such overt means of luring Sonic into a trap when an ambush would suffice, Eggman assured him it would mess with Sonic as Starline wanted. Immediately after, he and Starline began experimenting with the Metal Virus. After a couple of tests, Eggman declared his Metal Virus a success. This made Starline express happiness over their collaboration, which let Eggman to ask Starline of how he located him in Windmill Village. Explaining that he used the Warp Topaz for that, Starline used it to provide Eggman with a "window" to the site of Sonic and Tails' battle with Rough and Tumble. When Rough and Tumble stood to lose, Eggman began implementing the Metal Virus for the next phase of his plan, although Starline thought it was too early. When Rough and Tumble later asked Eggman for another chance to fight Sonic, Metal Sonic stepped in to receive that honor. However, Starline requested to be next to fight Sonic, believing he knew exactly how to hit him.[4]

After noticing his Metal Virus's slow infection rate, Eggman conducted an experiment to see if there was a way to accelerate the infection. Discovering that the infection accelerated the more a victim was exposed to an infected victim, Eggman was satisfied enough with his Metal Virus to properly prepare the next phase of his plan. It was then that Rough and Tumble came and demanded that Eggman gave them a new edge to achieve revenge on Sonic with. In response, Eggman told them his "latest weapon just got out of beta". Later, after trying to kill Sonic with a bomb, Starline made a portal back to the Final Egg, only for Eggman to angrily pull him through the portal and tell him that Sonic was his to kill and that simply destroying him was unsatisfying to him. After Starline apologized, Eggman let him go and checked the video feed from the bomb site. As Eggman had suspected, Sonic survived the explosion. Eggman then asked Starline why he saved his "obsolete junk" at the bomb site, to which Starline explained that they were collectibles to him. Allowing this, Eggman asked Starline of his impression of Sonic, to which Starline said that the experience had "put a lot of things into a new perspective."[5]

Later on, Dr. Eggman, Orbot and Cubot were preparing special backpacks filled with the Metal Virus when Starline informed Eggman that Sonic and Amy had broken into the base in Echo Mine. Eggman thus had Cubot bring Rough and Tumble to hangar three so he could send them after Sonic and Amy. There, the doctor equipped the skunk brothers with his backpacks, but chose not to reveal the consequences of their usage. He also provided them with a tank. Later, Eggman and Starline watched Sonic and Amy fight Rough and Tumble via surveillance transmitted to the Final Egg. After they saw Sonic get infected with the Metal Virus, they decided to move onto the next phase of Eggman's plan and share the Metal Virus with the world.[6] Soon after, the Badnik work force finished building the Faceship in the Final Egg's hangar. With the Faceship completed, Eggman, Starline, Orbot and Cubot got onboard the vessel and left the Final Egg in it.[7]

Trivia[]

  • Near the end of Sonic's version of the Final Egg, there is a particularly slow-moving platform which leads to four extra lives. This was most likely intended as preparation for the battle with the Egg Viper within the level itself. In the final game, the battle was split from the level (so progress is saved), so the extra lives are unnecessary. However, they were possibly left there for the player to discover.
  • Beyond the Capsule, there is an unused tunnel that is blocked off, but it can be accessed using the Light Speed Dash. It was intended to trigger the cutscene for the Egg Viper battle within the level itself. However, in the final game, the battle was split from the level. As a result, a Capsule was implemented and the area was sealed off, probably due to the difficulty of the level.
  • An unfinished duck Badnik was intended for this level, but completely removed in the final game. It can be found in pre-release copies, where it shoots at the player and attempts to run away.
  • The Final Egg is nowhere to be seen when using characters that do not go into it. The only notable exception is Knuckles, who can see the base from the Mystic Ruins Jungle Area, but cannot enter it.
  • In an scrapped cutscene in the Final Egg, Dr. Robotnik scolds Gamma for him disappointing the doctor, before reluctantly giving him a second chance. Apparently, this cutscene would have played if the player failed to complete the Final Egg as Gamma. Oddly, despite being removed, it was still dubbed into English.
Sonic Adventure Final Egg Pokeball

A "Pokéball" on the screen.

  • Blue screens with a Robotnik symbol show flickering images of what looks like a Pokéball from the Pokémon series.
  • At the start of Sonic's version of the Final Egg on the Dreamcast, there is a hovering, offline Egg Keeper that activates once the player gets near it. This Egg Keeper was removed from the Action Stage in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, but returned in the 2010 remaster of the game.
  • This is the only Action Stage in Sonic Adventure that reuses a theme first heard in an Adventure Field, as the area leading into Final Egg plays the same music ("Mechanical Resonance ...for Final Egg") and one of only two Action Stages that use a single theme in more than one section in the same Action Stage, being the theme for the first and third sections as Sonic (the other being Sky Deck using "Skydeck A Go Go! ...for Sky Deck" in the first and second sections as Sonic).
