“ I tried working with Alan a couple of times, and I just couldn't handle it. You know he...he pushed his people to the limit, demanding everything, including blood. And talk about paranoia. God have mercy on his soul, he was one ruthless son of a bitch. „
~ James Brabant to Harold Moroe about Alan and his true nature.
“ Here we are at the edge of the world in human history. Things like this happen all the time in the jungle; it's survival of the fittest. In the jungle, it's the daily violence of the strong overcoming the weak. JACK!! „
~ Alan Yates preparing to burn down a native village and pin the massacre on another tribe.

Alan Yates is the main antagonist of the 1980 extremely controversial Italian exploitation film Cannibal Holocaust.

He was portrayed by Carl Gabriel Yorke.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • For starters, he was quite a sadistic person who loved to put gritty realism in his own documentaries, even if it meant to hurting others along the way, as shown in his movie "The Last Road to Hell".
    • The first hint at Alan's true nature came when it was revealed he paid the Ugandan and Vietnamese armies to execute political prisoners for said documentary.
  • According to a former employee named James Brabant, who tried working with him a couple of times and couldn't handle it anymore, he pushed his people to the limit, demanding everything, along with blood.
  • When the crew's tour guide, Felipe, was bitten by a snake, he filmed Jack Anders amputating his leg with excitement, along with Mark Tomaso, and showed no care when Felipe died from blood loss, instead taking advantage of the opportunity to do whatever he wanted with no witnesses around.
  • After Jack wounded an innocent man from an indigenous Yacumo tribe, which resulted in him and his crew finding out about his village, he and his minions forced the people of the Yacumo tribe, children included, to stay inside a hut while he burned it down with them inside.
  • He planned to alter the footage of his attack on the Yacumo tribe to frame it as an attack by the Ya̧nomamö for his phony documentary. He was ecstatic watching the villagers die and immediately started having sex with Faye Daniels in front of the suffering Yacumo.
  • After he and his crew found the cannibalistic Ya̧nomamö tribe, he and his minions then proceeded to gangrape an innocent Ya̧nomamö girl on the spot for no reason other than sadistic pleasure.
  • Afterwards, he and his crew were then seen laughing and joking while standing next to the corpse of the girl, now impaled on a stake. When Mark announced they're filming, he feigned shock and announced they discovered that the girl had been killed by the "barbaric" Ya̧nomamö tribe and that he couldn't imagine what kind of person would perform such cruelty, stifling a laugh as he said this.
    • This heavily implied that he himself impaled the girl off camera and framed the Ya̧nomamö tribe for it to gain footage of the tribe's "savagery".
  • He ultimately lost his only redeeming quality when he seemingly felt concerned about Faye Daniels' safety even going as far as to consider saving her. That was until Mark Tomaso, the last remaining member of his crew, convinced him to continue his film, which resulted in him abandoning Faye completely without a second thought and causing her to be gangraped, beaten to death, and beheaded. Furthermore, given how most of their interactions revolved around them having sex, it was likely that he at least just desired her as a sex partner in the first place. What also didn't help his case was that he was just as horrible even before it.
  • While it may seem like his friendship with Mark Tomaso was genuine at first, their interactions suggest this was more of a mutual sadism, and on top of that, he also left him behind to be slaughtered and tortured just to save his own skin.
  • Despite Cannibal Holocaust being an exploitation film, his crimes were not played entirely for shock value, as the film had a clear message condemning sensationalism in the media.
  • Despite the cannibalistic Ya̧nomamö tribe being heinous in their own right, partaking in rituals; involving cannibalism, rape - raping and bludgeoning a woman with a stone dildo, and even forcibly aborting and burying a fetus, Alan has much fewer resources than them and is treated as the "real savage" as, despite his civilised upbringing, engaging in activities that horrified even the savages themselves.

Trivia[]

  • He's the current icon of the wiki's Article Stubs template.
  • Alike to other actors of Pure Evildoers such as Edwin Epps, Joffrey Baratheon, and Dolores Umbridge, actor Carl Gabriel Yorke was reportedly very uncomfortable performing some of Alan's actions - especially since real animals were being killed - and nearly botched a monologue due to his horror at the pig's dying squeals, and during the infamous gang-rape scene, shoved away another actor due to his distress.
