~ Vasher referencing Oppenheimer to the BAU, also his last words. |
Hayman Vasher is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "A Thousand Suns".
He is a homegrown terrorist who begins terrorizing Colorado by hacking planes and forcing them to crash, causing widespread panic across the state before the FBI, specifically the Behavioral Analysis Unit, arrive to investigate the crashes.
He was portrayed by John Grady.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Prior to the episode, he stalked his former blind date, Kristina Morrow and swore to take revenge on her for humiliating him.
- After learning that Morrow was flying to a college reunion, he hacked the plane (Trans Alliance Flight 420) and sabotaged its wings, causing the plane to violently crash in the desert, killing 151 people, including multiple children and at least one infant.
- This would also cause copilot Frank Canvers (the sole survivor) to become overwhelmed by PTSD after surviving the crash and being driven more depressed than he was prior to the episode, to the point where he was constantly stressed and almost broken by the time the BAU got to interview him.
- The crash would also cause chaos around the town of Durango, with multiple people fearing the worst and many others becoming extremely paranoid. The latter of which would cause a towns member to distrust the police for fear of one of them being involved and a group of former army men being arrested.
- After learning that the copilot survived, Hayman began planning a new plane crash to fix his ego, even making a hang-up call to Canvers due to Hayman's belief that he should've died in the plane crash.
- He hacked Inter Atlantic Flight 61, which was stated to have 302 passengers, while it was flying, with the intention of crashing it into a football stadium, killing both the passengers and the attendants of the stadium.
- Due to this, the President authorized the use of fighter jets to shoot the plane down if ordered by the military, forcing the BAU to hurry in finding Hayman.
- When Hotch, Morgan and Kate finally corners him, Hayman threatens them with the plane crashing so they will force the jets that were helping to abort.
- Despite Hotch's attempts at appealing to Hayman, Hayman shows no remorse for his actions and attempts one last time to crash the plane, leading to Hotch shooting him dead and Morgan destroying the controls.
- While he does have a slight tragedy of being humiliated by Morrow online after an awkward blind date, thus forcing him to cut off society and live away in the forest, his tragedy comes off as petty and it's clear that he is motivated purely by narcissism rather than tragedy.
- Although it's made clear that Hayman is a fan of J. Robert Oppenheimer, this is only because Hayman was fascinated by the destruction Oppenheimer caused rather than him as a person. When Hotch brings up that Oppenheimer felt remorse for creating the atomic bomb, Hayman very clearly refuses to listen and focuses entirely on killing the passengers.
