“ | I've got a real good eye for prime meat. Runs in the family. | „ |
~ Drayton's most famous quote. |
“ | I just can't take no pleasure in killin'. There's just some things you gotta do, don't mean you have to like it. | „ |
~ Drayton on why he leaves the killing to Leatherface and Nubbins. |
Drayton Sawyer, also known as the Cook, is a major antagonist of the 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the main antagonist of its sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. He is the eldest son of the Sawyer family, a family of cannibalistic serial killer rednecks.
He was portrayed by the late Jim Siedow.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He is effectively the leader of the cannibal family, as he is the oldest member apart from Grandpa Sawyer, who is too old and senile to do much of anything, and he bossed the others around. This means that he had effectively been responsible for all the murders that the family had performed since Grandpa became a decrepit old man, as he enabled all of their crimes.
- He sold some of the meat of the Sawyer family victims at his gas station, enforcing cannibalism with his unknowing customers.
- He is a hypocrite, as despite claiming that he sees murder and cannibalism as a necessary evil to survive and that he doesn't approve of taking sadistic joy in what the family does, he very clearly takes joy in tormenting Sally Hardesty by poking her with a stick while laughing maniacally.
- He also mocks her crying by howling and laughing (it’s implied that the real reason why he leaves killing to his brothers is because he prefers to torment his victims).
- The fact that his brother Bubba (Leatherface) and their grandfather lost their jobs at the slaughterhouse is not an excuse for resorting to cannibalism, as there were plenty of other ways they could have tried to obtain food, especially considering that the Sawyers still have at least one healthy chicken in a cage in their house.
- He is the sanest of the family and clearly knows right from wrong.
- He captures Sally after she escaped Leatherface and took her back to the Sawyer home to kill and eat her.
- Although he was polite to Sally and tried to calm her down, this was only when he believed that his brothers would kill her, and he still mocked her later about Grandpa attempting to kill her.
- By the time of the second film, he had continued selling human chili to people, even winning two consecutive cooking awards for it.
- He ordered Leatherface and Chop Top to kill Vanita as petty revenge for drawing police investigation by playing audio of Chop Top and Leatherface's latest murders on her radio station.
- He tried to encourage Leatherface to kill Vanita despite his crush on her.
- He ultimately broke his oath to never kill anyone himself when he prepared to finish Vanita off after growing impatient waiting for Grandpa to kill her.
- He doesn't really love his brothers.
- He constantly yelled at and argued with Nubbins and Chop Top and straight up assaulted Nubbins and Leatherface onscreen, also making mention of having assaulted Chop Top as well in the second film. He even prepared to kill himself with a grenade at the climax of the second film despite Leatherface being in close proximity (though in fairness Leatherface was doomed anyway as he had just been impaled with a chainsaw at that point, though Drayton did not see this and was not aware of this).
- Despite his apparent admiration for his grandfather, he subverted this redeeming quality at the climax of the second film when he prepared to use a grenade to kill himself despite Grandpa being in close range, thus ultimately getting Grandpa killed.
Trivia[]
- His 3D counterpart does not count, as he was reluctant to turn Leatherface over to the police, showing some care for him.
