Suited For Success is the fourteenth episode of the first season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. In this episode, Rarity wants to make dresses for her friends for the upcoming Grand Galloping Gala but has trouble satisfying all their requests. The title of the episode is a play on the phrase "dressed for success".
Production and development[]
The fourth Evolution of a Scene video states that the original title of this episode was "Dress for Failure", a more immediate reference to dress for success. Lauren Faust later confirmed this fact on Twitter.[2] The ninth MLP scenes season 1 video features a shot of Sea Swirl, Lemon Hearts, Cloud Kicker, Merry May, and Minuette at the beginning of the first fashion show, which isn't included in the final version of the episode.
The episode was #4 in the We Heart Ponies Fan Favorite Mare-a-thon, in the leadup to Hearts and Hooves Day.
Summary[]
Arranging for a fashion show[]
At Carousel Boutique, Rarity enlists the help of her pet Opalescence while making her gown for the Grand Galloping Gala in Canterlot. Later, Twilight Sparkle and Applejack enter the room, and Twilight asks for help fixing a button on her dress for the Gala. Rarity remarks that the dress is too old and insists on making a new dress for her instead, as well as sprucing up the "work duds" Applejack intends to wear to the Gala.
When Rainbow Dash crashes into the room after a flying trick goes awry, Rarity comes up with an idea to produce Gala dresses for all of her friends and feature them in a fashion show afterwards. Applejack questions whether Rarity can handle the workload, but Rarity dismisses her concern and proceeds to make the dresses while singing a song.
Designing the dresses[]
Rarity leads her friends into the boutique and shows them their new outfits, proudly describing how each dress matches the personality of each pony. After a pause, her friends gingerly express that the designs are not what they had hoped for. Rarity offers to redesign them to their specifications but questions her decision to do so after they leave.
Later on, Fluttershy returns to the boutique to see the new design for her gown. Fluttershy expresses only weak approval, however, and when Rarity presses her for her real opinion, Fluttershy goes off on a stream of detailed complaints about the fabric and sewing work that leaves Rarity stunned.
Rarity continues singing as each pony tells her what they want for their dress: technically accurate constellations for Twilight, party ornaments for Pinkie Pie, French haute couture for Fluttershy, galoshes for Applejack, and a vague request to be "about twenty percent cooler" for Rainbow Dash. Afterward, having finished all the dresses but her own, Rarity tells Opal that they are the ugliest she's ever made.
The fashion show[]
Rarity presents the revised dresses to her friends, who all happily proclaim they're exactly what they asked for. Spike appears at the door and reports that, thanks to his mention of the upcoming fashion show, Hoity Toity will be in attendance to see Rarity's work. Despite Spike's positive framing, Rarity appears visibly dismayed at the news.
At the fashion show, Rarity spots Hoity Toity from behind the curtain and tries to calm her nerves. After the lights dim and the music starts, Spike announces the "breathtaking designs of Ponyville's own Rarity" as Twilight and her friends step out onto the catwalk wearing the new dresses. The designs are received poorly by the audience, however, and Hoity Toity haughtily demands to see who designed them. Spike, still excited for Rarity, introduces her in front of the silent crowd as her friends realize they went too far with their requests.
The drama[]
When Rarity's friends don't see her after several days, they approach her bedroom door and ask if she's okay. Rarity responds in dramatic fashion:
- "I'm never coming out! I can't show my face in Ponyville ever again! I used to be somepony. I used to be respected. I made dresses. Beautiful, beautiful dresses! But now everypony is laughing at me. I'm nothing but a laughing stock!"
- — Rarity
After Twilight tries in vain to coax her out, she spots Rarity's unfinished dress through the keyhole and devises a plan.
As Rarity contemplates aloud about living in exile, she hears Opal mewling and looks out the window to find her distressed and shivering on a tree branch. Rarity runs outside to rescue Opal only to discover it was a ruse by her friends to show off her Gala dress, now finished according to her original design with the help of Fluttershy's "freaky knowledge of sewing". Rarity approves of the dress and forgives her friends when they apologize for rejecting her original designs. As she laments her ruined career, Hoity Toity appears and agrees to attend a revised fashion show.
The other fashion show[]
Inside the boutique, Rarity generates music and a magic light show as her friends model each of the original dresses one by one. Hoity Toity is amazed by the display and applauds Rarity when she steps out in her own dress. In dictating her friendship report to Spike after the show, Twilight observes that trying to please everyone often results in pleasing no one, and that you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given.
Hoity Toity congratulates Rarity on her fashion debut and asks if he can feature the dresses in his boutique in Canterlot, though his request for a dozen of each dress "by next Tuesday" sends her into nervous laughter.
Quotes[]
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Rarity: I-dea! I'll make you an outfit for the Gala too, Rainbow Dash.
- Rainbow Dash: Outfit for the what now?
- Applejack: So all you have to do is make a different, stunning, original, amazing outfit for one, two, three, four, five... plus yourself, six ponies? And lickety split?
- Rarity: Oh, Applejack. You make it sound as if it's going to be hard.
- Applejack: They sure are... sumth'n.
- Twilight Sparkle: Yes! Something.
- Pinkie Pie: I love something! Something is my favorite!
- Fluttershy: It's... nice.
- Rarity: Tell me, tell me, tell-me-tell-me-tell-me!
- Fluttershy: All right! Since you really wanna know... [inhales] The armscye's tight, the middy collar doesn't go with the shawl lapel, the hems are clearly machine-stitched, the pleats are uneven, the fabric looks like toile, you used a backstitch here when it clearly called for a topstitch or maybe a traditional blanket stitch, and the overdesign is reminiscent of prêt-à-porter and not true French haute couture. But, uh... you know... um, whatever you want to do is fine.
- Rarity: Aren't you going to tell me to change something too?
- Rainbow Dash: No, I just want my dress to be cool.
- Rarity: Do you not like the color?
- Rainbow Dash: The color's fine, just make it look cooler.
- Rarity: Do you not like the shape?
- Rainbow Dash: The shape's fine, just make the whole thing you know, cooler. It needs to be about twenty percent cooler.
- Hoity Toity: Those outfits are the ugliest things I've ever seen, oh for shame! Who is responsible for subjecting our eyes to these horrors? Not to mention wasting my valuable time.
- Rarity: Hide me.
- Applejack: Well, we can't just leave Rarity like this.
- Pinkie Pie: She'll become a crazy cat lady!
- Twilight Sparkle: She only has one cat.
- Pinkie Pie: Give her time.
