The Cutie Pox is the sixth episode of the second season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the thirty-second episode overall. In this episode, Apple Bloom grows impatient for her cutie mark and finds a way to get one immediately, only to end up with more than she bargained for. The term pox is used to describe a variety diseases characterized by pockmarks, and in the archaic sense, it may refer to disease in general.
Production[]
The library scene was at the animation rough cut stage on August 2, 2011.[2][3] Two name options for the owner of the bowling alley that weren't used were Pony Bowl-ony and Mr. Incredi-Bowl.[4] There were several deleted scenes of Apple Bloom displaying more cutie mark talents, one of which was a 'scootering' talent, which outraged Scootaloo.[5]
Summary[]
Heart's Desire[]

Goodbye, Cutie Mark Crusaders - hello, Bowling Dolls!
Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, and Apple Bloom gather outside a bowling alley in Ponyville and determine that the new name of their group will be "The Bowling Dolls" in anticipation of earning cutie marks in bowling. They end up performing poorly, however, and after watching another pony in the alley earn his cutie mark, Apple Bloom becomes discouraged.

"I bet you could mix up a brew to fix... anything."
Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle try in vain to cheer up Apple Bloom, who eventually wanders off alone into the Everfree Forest. Not far in, she trips on a root and tumbles down a steep hill just as Zecora passes by. Seeing that the fall chipped one of Apple Bloom's teeth, Zecora brings the filly back to her hut and produces a potion to restore the tooth. Apple Bloom expresses her frustration with not yet having a cutie mark and insinuates that a potion might be able to "fix" it, to which Zecora responds that only time will create a mark.
With Apple Bloom's tooth back to normal, Zecora starts to brew a new potion to help a rooster fix his morning call. She uses a flower called Heart's Desire, which she says will cause the rooster's talent to "come into view" and help it crow again. Finding herself short on an ingredient, Zecora heads outside, leaving Apple Bloom alone in the hut. Sometime later, as Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo chat outside the Ponyville Schoolhouse, Apple Bloom approaches them and excitedly flaunts a brand new cutie mark.
Apple Bloom's cutie mark[]

Apple Bloom shows off her cutie mark.
Apple Bloom explains that her cutie mark depicts a "loop-de-hoop" before pulling out a large metal hoop and showing off a number of tricks while her classmates look on in amazement. Cheerilee approaches and asks that she give the class a lesson in loop-de-hooping, and after performing some more tricks that show up Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara, Apple Bloom proceeds to use the hoop as a propeller around her tail to lift off like a helicopter. While in the air, however, Apple Bloom becomes distracted when a second cutie mark appears on her flank, causing her to fall back to the ground.
Diamond Tiara claims the cutie marks are fake as Silver Spoon demands that Apple Bloom demonstrate the talent depicted on her new mark: spinning plates on chopsticks. When Snips and Snails toss plates and sticks at her, however, Apple Bloom instantly balances them on her nose while simultaneously twirling the hoop around her tail. Surprised by her own ability and pleased with the positive attention, Apple Bloom takes the class with her as she tours around Ponyville performing various feats with the spinning plates and loop-de-hoop to amazed onlookers.
The cutie pox[]

Apple Bloom can't stop tap-tap-tapping!
That evening, Applejack, Big McIntosh, and Granny Smith congratulate Apple Bloom for earning her cutie mark before everyone heads off to bed. Applejack wakes up a short time later when she hears tapping coming from Apple Bloom's room and, upon investigation, finds her sister dancing uncontrollably with a tap dancing cutie mark on her flank alongside the other two marks. After trying in vain to manually stop the dancing, Applejack determines to ask Twilight Sparkle for help.
The Apple sisters head to the Golden Oak Library, where Twilight and Spike find a book that identifies Apple Bloom's condition as cutie pox. Dismayed to read that the pox has no known cure and alarmed when Apple Bloom starts speaking French, the ponies decide to seek out Zecora for help.
Seeds of Truth[]

Weightlifting is just one of her many talents.
Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, and Apple Bloom try to make their way to Zecora's hut but are slowed down as new cutie marks begin to appear more frequently, causing Apple Bloom to constantly perform the talents they depict. The wild behavior scares the townsfolk, who retreat into their homes just as Zecora walks into town. When Twilight and Applejack tell her of Apple Bloom's affliction, Zecora remarks that she came to town to get more Heart's Desire flower since her own supply went missing after Apple Bloom's last visit. She produces some seeds from her saddle bag and explains that they will grow into a cure for the pox, but that "one must speak the truth" in order for them to sprout.
Applejack quickly plants the seeds in the ground in front of her and pleads for someone to tell the truth. After a confession from Pinkie Pie to eating more corncakes than she previously admitted to fails to grow the seeds, Apple Bloom finally admits that her cutie marks are just the result of a potion she brewed at Zecora's hut using Heart's Desire. This causes the seeds to instantly bloom into a flower that Apple Bloom quickly ingests, dispelling the cutie pox and erasing the marks across her body.
Apple Bloom apologizes for lying to everyone and stealing the flowers from Zecora, who forgives the misdeed before suddenly disappearing. When asked by Twilight to write a friendship report to Princess Celestia, Apple Bloom obliges, observing that taking dishonest shortcuts to get what your heart desires doesn't work because you didn't earn what your heart desires. Moments after remarking how that all good things come to those who wait, however, she joins Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle as they head for Zecora's hut to try earning a cutie mark in brewing potions.
Quotes[]
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Scootaloo: Come on, Apple Bloom, it's just a cutie mark!
- Sweetie Belle: Or lack of a cutie mark!
- Scootaloo: Shh! That's not helping!
- Zecora: Yes little one, it is true, I have many a healing brew.
- Apple Bloom: And not only stuff that fixes the bad, but stuff that brings the good! Good health, good hair... good heavens! Hmm... I bet you can mix up a brew to fix... anything.
- Zecora: There are many mixtures in this room, but none for what you want, dear Apple Bloom. A magic potion does not hold the key. For a cutie mark, time is the only remedy.
- Sweetie Belle: Two cutie marks?
- Scootaloo: Two talents?
- Apple Bloom: Aw yeah!
- Sweetie Belle: Our friend is the most...
- Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle: ...special pony ever!
- Applejack: Three cutie marks?!
- Apple Bloom: Help me!
- Twilight Sparkle: Cutie pox. This puzzling pony plague afflicted a population of ponies back in the Paleopony Period.
- Spike: Say that ten times fast!
- Apple Bloom: Sacré bleu! Plus de marques de cutie! [gasp] Qu'est-ce c'est?! Je parle Français?!
- Applejack: My sister's speakin' in Fancy!
- Lily Valley: She's cursed!
- Rose: Hexed!
- Daisy: Enchanted!
- Spike: No, she's not.
- Daisy, Lily Valley and Rose: [sigh]
- Spike: She just has some weird mysterious disease with no known cure called cutie pox.
- Ponies: Cutie pox?!
- Applejack: I sure am proud of you, sis. Seems like you finally learned the importance of patience.
- Apple Bloom: Yup. All good things come to those who wait. [pause] Well, I've waited long enough.
- Scootaloo: Actually, that was way too long.
