A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1 is the twenty-fifth episode of the second season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the fifty-first overall. It is the first half of a two-part season finale.
The Mane Six head to Canterlot to participate in the wedding of Twilight Sparkle's brother Shining Armor, though their sibling relationship becomes strained when Twilight begins accusing the bride of strange behavior.

The wedding announcement[]
Twilight reads part of the invitation.
As the Mane Six enjoy a picnic in the meadows near Ponyville, Spike rushes in with an urgent message for Twilight Sparkle but receives a letter from Princess Celestia before he can catch his breath. Twilight reads aloud the letter, which delegates various tasks to the ponies in preparation for an upcoming wedding in Canterlot. When she finishes reading, Spike hands her the original message announcing a wedding between Princess Mi Amore Cadenza and Twilight's brother, Shining Armor.
Twilight reacts with anger to the announcement, explaining to her friends via song that she and her brother had always had a close relationship such that it seems disrespectful to learn of his wedding through a formal invitation. In contrast, Twilight's friends express excitement about participating in the wedding, especially when they learn that Shining Armor is captain of the royal guard.
Arriving at Canterlot[]
"Hey. You're my little sister."
Spike and the ponies take the train to Canterlot, where they find a large bubble encompassing the city and royal guards posted everywhere. As Princess Celestia surveils the surrounding area from a spire, Twilight seeks out Shining Armor and scolds him for not telling her about the wedding in person. Shining explains that a threat has been made against Canterlot recently, and that he had to remain in the city to maintain a magical protective bubble around it. He reassures Twilight of their close relationship and invites her to be his best mare, to which she happily agrees.
A reunion gone wrong.
When asked who the bride is, Shining Armor tells Twilight that "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza" is Princess Cadance, her beloved former babysitter. She recalls Cadance with excitement and fondness, and when the bride to be appears in a nearby doorway, Twilight eagerly greets her with a nursery rhyme that they used to recite together. To her dismay, however, Cadance brushes impassively by to join Shining Armor, who informs Twilight that the princess will be surveying the wedding preparations while he returns to guard duties.
Directing the preparations[]
Please, call me Princess Mi Amore Cadenza.
Brooding over the disregard from her former babysitter, Twilight heads to the castle kitchen and finds that Applejack's catering preparation is going well. Cadance shows up to sample the food but reacts with only insincere praise, and when Applejack sends her off with a bag of fritters, she secretly tosses them in the trash on the way out.
Incensed by the incident, Twilight visits Rarity as she works on the princess' wedding dress and vents her frustration at the apparent personality change. Cadance enters with her bridesmaids soon afterward and requests several changes after looking over the dresses, overriding her entourage when they approve of the color choices. Rarity agrees to adjust the clothing accordingly, though Twilight tweaks the princess as overdemanding once she leaves the room.
Princess Cadance heads to the castle ballroom to review the reception plans drawn up by Pinkie Pie, which include various party games and dances. Twilight looks on from behind a pillar as Cadance derides the setup as a "six-year old's birthday party”, though Pinkie takes it as a compliment.
Disbelief[]
"Maybe there shouldn't even be a wedding!"
As Princess Luna takes over nighttime surveillance duties from Princess Celestia, the Mane Six and Spike gather at a cafe for drinks. Twilight casts Cadance as rude and insincere and tries to rally the others against her, though they reason that the bride to be's behavior is likely a result of nerves. When her friends suggest that she is being overprotective of her brother, Twilight angrily counters that her friends are too preoccupied with wedding preparations to notice the issue and storms off.
He'll be fine.
Twilight goes to share her concerns with Shining Armor, though moments after she arrives at his house, Cadance appears and asks to speak with him privately in the next room. With the door ajar, Twilight peers in to see the princess cast a spell on Shining after he complains of a headache, causing him to appear briefly entranced. Alarmed at the sight and convinced that Cadance is evil, Twilight flees the house.
At the ponies' castle suite, Twilight barges in to warn her friends about Cadance only to find them excitedly trying on a new set of dresses. Fluttershy tells her that the princess asked them to be her new bridesmaids as reward for their work on the wedding, though they weren't told what happened to the old bridesmaids. Seeing that her friends are thoroughly delighted with Cadance, Twilight realizes that she is on her own.
The wedding rehearsal[]
Twilight stands alone.
The next day, Princess Celestia, Princess Cadance, Shining Armor, Spike, and Twilight's friends rehearse the wedding in the Canterlot castle. The group soon realize that Twilight is missing only for her to burst into the hall moments later and declare that Cadance is evil, citing her behavior toward the Mane Six, the sudden disappearance of the bridesmaids, and the spell she cast on Shining Armor. After Cadance leaves the room in tears, Shining angrily confronts Twilight's accusations: the spell cast on him was to heal headaches brought on by summoning the protective bubble, the old bridesmaids were only in it to meet royalty, and Shining's guard duties have required Cadance to make all the wedding decisions alone, causing her emotional stress.
This is the face of true evil.
Embittered by the hostility towards his bride, Shining revokes Twilight's role as best mare and suggests she not attend the wedding at all. The rest of the group join him as he heads out to check on Cadance, leaving a devastated Twilight alone in the hall. As she laments the loss of her sibling bond and questions her understanding of the situation, she finds Cadance next to her and apologizes, only for the princess to encompass Twilight in a sphere of magic green flame that draws her down into the floor.

- Pinkie Pie: Okay, let me see. We've been over the games... the dances... I think this reception is gonna be perfect! Don't you?
- Princess Cadance: Perfect! ...if we were celebrating a six-year-old's birthday party.
- Pinkie Pie: [gasps] Thank you!
- Fluttershy: Can you believe it? We're gonna be Princess Mi Amore Cadenza's new bridesmaids!
- Twilight Sparkle: New bridesmaids? What happened to her old bridesmaids?
- Applejack: She didn't say. But she did tell us that she would love-love-love it if we'd fill in for them.
- Twilight Sparkle: Maybe I was being overprotective. I could've gained a sister. But instead... I just lost a brother.
- Twilight Sparkle: I'm sorry!
- Princess Cadance: You will be.
