Ghosts are non-corporeal human spirits who are tethered to the Earthly Plane due to personal regrets or unfinished business that prevent them from passing on to the afterlife.

History[]

Evanora Harkness[]

By 1693, Evanora Harkness, the matriarch of the Salemites, had discovered that her daughter Agatha Harkness was practicing dark magic. Evanora informed the other Salemites, who tied up Agatha during a witch trial where they tried to execute her. However, Agatha drained them of their magical powers, killing them in the process.^[1] Having failed to kill her daughter, Evanora's regret caused her to remain on as a ghost. In 2026, Evanora appeared within the Witches' Road, where she possessed Agatha during the Spirit Witch Trial. She then emerged out of Agatha's body and berated Agatha Harkness' Coven for having joined up with Agatha when her own coven risked their lives trying to kill her. Evanora then asked Agatha's coven to leave Agatha with her. When the coven was hesitant, Evanora possessed Agatha again, although she was forced out by Alice Wu-Gulliver's protection magic.^[2]

Agatha Harkness[]

In 2026, Agatha Harkness chose to sacrifice herself by initiating a Kiss of Death with Death herself.^[3] However, she did not wish to pass on to the afterlife as she could not bring herself to meet her son, Nicholas Scratch, whose song she had used to kill many witches throughout centuries. Her powerful desire to remain out of the afterlife caused her to become a ghost, and she chose to remain next to Billy Maximoff's side to serve as his spirit guide.^[4]

Characteristic Traits[]

Ghosts are translucent and non-corporeal, although they can make themselves invisible. As spirits, they can possess living bodies to serve as temporary vessels. However, when such a possession occurs, the living body's appearance is altered to clearly denote a possession, as evidenced when Evanora Harkness possessed Agatha Harkness' body. Ghosts typically cannot interact with their environment without the use of a possessed vessel, although with enough will, talent, and power, a ghost can learn to do so, as shown when Agatha Harkness was able to knock her locket out of Billy Maximoff's hand.
