Penguins are a species of flightless birds in real life that have sometimes appeared in the Mario franchise, the first instance being in Pinball.
Profile[]
Habitat[]
Penguins inhabit arctic regions, notably Antarctica, in both real life and the Mario franchise.
Variants[]
Two species based on real-world penguins have been introduced prior to the Penguins in Super Mario 64, including Penkoons from Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Penpens from Donkey Kong for Game Boy. Penkoons are more specifically a hybrid between a penguin and a raccoon.
Later on, with the release of Super Mario 64, the Mario franchise went on to introduce their own species of Penguins. Because of their similarity to real-world penguins, the Penguins from the Mario franchise have often substituted for them.
Notable members[]
Similarly, a few characters based on real-world penguins have been introduced prior to the Penguins specific to the Mario franchise. In the Nintendo Adventure Book Leaping Lizards, there is a Penguin named Feldspar, who hosts the International Mushroom Games. In Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, there is a boss named Penguin, who is fought in Sherbet Land.
In Pinball / VS. Pinball[]

In scene A, there are three penguins, depicted with a dark blue body, that are the default icons on each of the three slot windows. If the player stops a slot window on a penguin while it is rotating, they earn 500 points. If all three slot windows land on a penguin, the up-post is raised, during which any points earned is doubled.
These penguins later made an appearance in the Family BASIC accessory for Family Computer, being among the sprites that can be used while programming. The sprites for the penguins in Pinball were later reused for Binary Land, for the male and the female penguin, but recolored light green and pink respectively.
In Mario is Missing![]
Penguins appear in the PC version, as part of the background of Antarctica. The game's narrator states that dozens of Penguins will become homeless if Bowser successfully melts Antarctica.
In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$![]
Regular penguins appear in the microgame Penguin Shuffle, where the objective is for the player to navigate a small, blue-feathered, baby penguin between several adult, black-feathered penguins. In the WarioWare Gold equivalent, Paddle Parade, the penguins were replaced with ducklings.
In other media[]
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[]
During Big Mouth Koopa's reign over Antarctica, he brings an Abominable Snowkoopa to life in order to terrorize the penguins. Later on, when Luigi stole Big Mouth's Wand, he used it to destroy the Abominable Snowkoopa as well as enlarge the penguins, who then angrily chase after Big Mouth.
