LM Lightning Strikes the Mansion

The blackout is caused from a lightning strike on the mansion, as shown in the original Luigi's Mansion

The blackout is an event that occurs in Luigi's Mansion and its Nintendo 3DS version.

In Luigi's Mansion[]

The blackout occurs right after Luigi unlocks the door to Area Four, when a large lightning strike causes all the lights in the mansion to go out, including rooms that Luigi has already cleared.

During the blackout, set groups of ghosts appear in rooms, usually more than what the rooms had prior to the blackout. Even rooms that have not yet been cleared have a different set of ghosts, replacing even the Portrait Ghosts. If Luigi captures every ghost and reenters the room, the same set of ghosts respawn there. The only rooms without ghosts are the Foyer, the Bottom of the Well and the Breaker Room, but all of them still remain dark. The player cannot save during the blackout as none of the Toads appear and no Boos can be caught.

A Gold Mouse can still appear in the same rooms where they appeared to the blackout, so if Luigi had previously cleared a room without capturing its Gold Mouse, the blackout gives him second chance to catch any that he missed. There are also a few Speedy Spirits available only during the blackout, but unlike Gold Mice, the Speedy Spirits that appeared in rooms before the blackout do not appear during the blackout.

Telephone Room Blackout

The optional phone call conversation with E. Gadd in the Telephone Room during the blackout

In order to turn the power back on, Luigi must go in the Wardrobe Room and capture Uncle Grimmly, the only Portrait Ghost who appears during the blackout. Professor E. Gadd even provides a hint to this during the optional phone conversation with him in the Telephone Room. After capturing Uncle Grimmly, a treasure chest containing the key to the Breaker Room appears, the only time that a treasure chest appears without the lights going on. After unlocking the door to the Breaker Room, Luigi must pull a switch that turns on all the lights in previously cleared rooms. However, rooms that Luigi had not previously completed stay dark, except the Breaker Room, which lights up.

In the Nintendo 3DS remake, during the blackout, Luigi cannot go back to Professor E. Gadd's Lab from the mansion's entrance because the door is locked by a "mysterious force."
