The Gallery is an area in Luigi's Mansion and its Nintendo 3DS version.
Description[]
The Gallery is located near Professor E. Gadd's Lab. In here, one can see the paintings of the Portrait Ghosts that Luigi has captured. The design of the Gallery is different between the original Nintendo GameCube version and the Nintendo 3DS remake.
Each of its two halls leads to a room with a large portrait of King Boo, if he has been captured at the end. On either side of his painting are two angel statues, which will flap their wings if they are interacted with. A picture of Luigi's NEW Mansion can also be seen after completing the adventure. Professor E. Gadd stands in front of a door in the Gallery, and according to the Game Boy Horror, the door leads to the Portrificationizer Chamber, according to the Game Boy Horror. However, it cannot be entered.
The Nintendo 3DS remake's Gallery has a more open-spaced room design that houses all 25 portraits organized on each floor by Area, a double door leading to a dedicated room that holds King Boo's painting, a silver statue base to the right of the double door to check achievements, and a room to the east with three paintings of ghosts, the Mansion's ranking, and the 35 named Boos. Luigi can interact with the portraits by changing their frame color to bronze, silver, gold or platinum. The Gallery now also hosts a Boss Rush mode for each individual portrait of a Portrait Ghost that Luigi has captured before, and it involves Luigi in a rematch with the selected Portrait Ghost, whom he has to capture in a rematch against it in the fastest time possible.
To toggle between portrait frames, Luigi must have caught the Portrait Ghost within the requisites for that frame first, so if Luigi only retrieved enough pearls for a Portrait Ghost with a silver frame, he can only toggle the frame between bronze and silver, not gold and platinum as well. The only way to also be able to toggle between the Portrait Ghost's gold and platinum frames is if Luigi recaptures that Portrait Ghost with a sufficient number of pearls, which is possible to do in Boss Rush. Platinum frames are exclusively obtainable in the Nintendo 3DS remake's Hidden Mansion, being the highest-ranked frame and requiring Luigi to suck up at least 140 HP in a single pull and, in the case of Area Bosses, have 95 or more HP at the end of the battle.
In Luigi's Mansion[]
Visiting the Gallery is optional, and it is one of the menu options for whenever Luigi is inside of Professor E. Gadd's Lab. The first opportunity that Luigi gets to visit the Gallery is after completing a session in the Training Room, upon which E. Gadd offers Luigi to go to the Gallery, stating that he is proud of it.
In the Nintendo 3DS version, visiting the Gallery is required after the Training Room because Luigi has to retrieve a part for the Game Boy Horror to activate its a third-person camera search function. The part is located inside of a blue treasure chest placed left of the larger portrait reserved for King Boo.
