Worm (
Appearance[]
Worm had the most warped and inhuman appearance out of all the Shadow Beasts. He was red-skinned and had changed his body in such a way as to resemble a worm. Long and thin with a pronounced potbelly, he took on an almost alien appearance. His sinuous body structure enabled underground movements impossible for a normal human. In fact, instead of digging with his arms, he used his pointed head to push into the earth while moving his neck in a circular motion to move through the ground.[5]
Personality[]
Despite his ominous appearance and voice, Worm observes formalities with the other members of the Mafia Community. He introduced himself to Dalzollene's group before demanding to know who they were and warned them against fighting the Phantom Troupe.[5] Despite his lethal injuries, he spoke with a poised tone. He seemingly prioritized the success of the Mafia over his own life, never mentioning his own condition. He shows a more gloating side of himself while on the offensive.[6]
Plot[]
Yorknew City arc[]
In the Gordeau Desert, Worm first appears in front of the remaining Nostrade Family bodyguards after tunneling out of the ground. He introduces himself as one of the Shadow Beasts and asks the bodyguards which family they belong to. Dalzollene informs Worm that they are with the Ritz Family and are bodyguards for Light Nostrade. After Worm warns them to stay out of the fight, the Shadow Beasts Leech, Porcupine, and Rabid Dog appear and add that the Phantom Troupe aren't just petty thieves, telling the Nostrade bodyguards to leave it to the experts. As the Shadow Beasts approach Uvogin, Worm tunnels back underground. When Leech, Porcupine, and Rabid Dog confront the Spider, Worm suddenly appears behind him and punches him hard in the face. However, as Worm sees that the punch completely broke his hand, Uvogin counters by smashing in the right side of Worm's face, causing teeth and one of his eyes to fly out.[5]
Worm then retaliates by grabbing Uvogin's arm and pulling it underground as he continues to drag him further down. Giving him an ultimatum, Worm says that he can either die by being pulled underground or be killed by the three Shadow Beasts above. As the three quickly leap toward Uvogin, he tells Worm that he is the one who can't escape and suddenly uses his Big Bang Impact ability to create an enormous crater in the ground. The three Shadow Beasts quickly leap back and notice Uvogin's Spider tattoo as Worm's severed arm is seen still hanging on to him. Although thought to be dead from the attack, Worm crawls out of the ground somewhere in the distance missing his right arm and severely wounded on the lower half of his body. He calls someone and mentions the Spiders, telling them to bring everyone, or they will be in trouble. Light later informs the Nostrade bodyguards that all the Shadow Beasts are dead except for the captured Owl.[2]
Abilities & Powers[]
As a Shadow Beast, Worm was very influential within the Mafia Community. He was also a capable fighter, one of the best serving under the Ten Dons, since he was chosen as one of their personal bodyguards. However, he was no match for Uvogin. His burrowing ability [note 1] played a central role in his fighting style, which seemed to consist of sneak attacks, dragging his opponents underground to kill them, or immobilizing them for other Shadow Beasts to finish them off.[6]
Enhanced Strength: Worm had a high level of physical strength. Uvogin, who was nearly unscathed after taking an anti-tank missile head-on, slightly praised his punch after being shown with some blood near the corner of his mouth. Despite having five broken fingers,[5] Worm managed to muster enough strength in that hand to restrain the Phantom Troupe's physically strongest member by grabbing his arm and diving underground.[6]
Immense Endurance: Worm seemed to hardly feel any pain at all. He showed only surprise when his hand broke upon hitting Uvogin's face. An instant later, he took a punch from him that completely crushed half of his face, and still did not even falter for a moment before reacting. He then used his broken hand to keep Uvogin pinned down. Although gravely injured by Uvogin's Big Bang Impact, he managed to drag himself away from the fight and call for backup.[6]
Nen[]
Worm was considered among the ten most powerful Nen users in the Mafia Community. He was a Transmuter*[3][4] whose great strength seems to signify good control over Enhancement as well. A punch to the face from him caused Uvogin to have some blood near the corner of his mouth and claim that the attack was effective. Worm's signature ability enabled him to travel underground without effort, much like his namesake. It allowed for effective stealth, as Kurapika only noticed him when he was very close and after Melody's warning, even though Worm had no hostile intentions toward them. He also managed to carry out a sneak attack on Uvogin. Other uses of his burrowing ability included retreating underground to avoid damage and diving after grabbing opponents to kill them in an environment where he had the advantage or simply to immobilize them while others dealt the finishing blow.[6]

Worm has the ability to burrow through the ground swiftly and relatively silently He can use this ability to approach the target unseen and launch sneak attacks[5] or to drag them underground, where they will be at a disadvantage compared to him.[6] It is unknown if his unusual appearance is connected to this Nen ability. |
