Rescue Mission

I have heard from a scholar in Juteaux that the Divine Weapon hidden here is Armads, the Thunder Axe.
— Elffin to Roy

The Thunder Axe (Japanese: 天雷の斧 Thunder Axe) is Chapter 12x of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. In order to play this chapter, the previous chapter must have been completed before the enemy phase of turn 20, and Elffin must be alive if he was recruited.

Plot

Main article: The Thunder Axe/Script

Because of Elffin's words, Roy heads for a cave near Juteaux to retrieve the Thunder Axe, Armads. Elffin tells him of Durban the Berserker, one of the Eight Legends and the original wielder of Armads. However, Bern hired bandits to seal of the cave's entrance. Due to the bandit leader Guerrero's aim to steal the treasure for himself, the entrance remains open long enough for the Lycian Army to enter and fend the bandits off.

After Roy and Elffin retrieve Armads from a hidden hollow inside the altar's throne, a messenger arrives, bearing grave news. High Chancellor Roartz and Lord Arcardo have staged a coup in Aquileia, taking Etruria's King Mordred hostage. Mage General Cecilia has fled to the Missur Peninsula, and the other Etrurian Generals have been blackmailed into the revolutionaries' service using the king's life.

Roy hopes for Cecilia's and Princess Guinivere's safety. Now, the Lycian Army sails for Missur to save them.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This chapter is relatively straightforward as long as you have sword users. If you're looking to level up certain units, make sure to bring them along. You'll also need at least one or two Thieves equipped with Torches. Although you can't grab all the treasures before the enemies do, you can always steal them from the enemy Thieves. Focus on obtaining the gems and Elixirs, as these are the most valuable items.

Divide your team into either one or two groups depending on how much you care about treasure. Each group should have a Thief and a healer. Study the map to identify enemy positions. Pay attention to the red-marked holes in the walls; they release poisonous gas. While the poison damage isn't severe (about 10 points), you can use Antitoxin to cure it or a Vulnerary to counteract its effects.

Key Enemies:

  • The Druid: One of his tomes, Eclipse, can reduce your HP to one. It's a rare occurrence but dangerous. Using a Thief with a torch to reveal his position and then eliminate him using strong and accurate units works well, as he cannot retaliate while having it equipped. His other tome, Nosferatu, is also fairly dangerous, as it can restore HP and make killing him difficult. Attacking him on enemy phase and using the Longbow is recommended.
  • The Boss and his lackeys: One is a Brigand with a powerful Devil Axe and the other is a Myrmidon with a Killing Edge. They only attack if you are adjacent to them, but their weapons make them dangerous. A Mage can take them down without much trouble.

The Berserker boss has massive strength a high critical rate. He uses inaccurate weapons, but due to his high bulk and throne bonuses, it is not too unlikely for him to get a critical hit as you try to whittle him down. Because a silver axe critical is almost certain death (especially on hard mode), it is imperative to force him to use the much weaker Hand Axe. It is likely for a well-trained unit to survive a hand axe critical (The Angelic Robe obtained a few chapters earlier can help with this). Attacking him with high speed sword units, combined with dancing and heal support, will ensure that he eventually goes down.

If you do not have reliable options for the above strategy, or don't mind taking it slow, you can attack the boss with units that have access to 2 range (mages work best because they are very accurate), then rescue the units each turn until you kill the boss. Make sure he doesn't attack you with the Hand Axe if you decide to attack him that way. Note that the throne heals him every turn, so make sure you have enough firepower to overcome it.
