A final boss (ラスボス, Rasubosu?, lit. Lasboss (abbr. of "Last Boss")) is the last boss in the game's main quest. After its defeat, the ending cutscene and credits will play. In some games the player can still do post-ending optional content by loading their save from a completed game file. A common theme among the final bosses is that they wish to destroy all existence and return the world to a state of nothingness, and that they are some kind of god or a being wanting to become one. Final bosses generally transform before facing the player and are fought in multiple forms. Final boss battles are often elaborate and cinematic, accompanied by a final boss theme, a battle music specific to the final boss that often become iconic pieces in the Final Fantasy oeuvre.
Final Fantasy[]
The final boss is Chaos. When the Warriors of Light killed Garland, the Four Fiends sent him into the past where Garland absorbed their power to become Chaos. He then sent the Fiends of the past into the future, creating a time loop that made Garland immortal. The Warriors of Light travel back in time to kill the original Four Fiends and destroy Chaos to close the loop.
Final Fantasy II[]
The final boss is the Emperor. Having been killed by Firion and his allies, the Emperor was sent to hell, but he conquered the realm and was reborn as the King of Hell. Infiltrating the palace of hell, Pandaemonium, which the Emperor had raised over Palamecia, Firion kills him a second time, destroying his soul.
Soul of Rebirth[]
The final boss is the Emperor as the lord of Arubboth. When Firion and his allies killed him, the Emperor's soul was split into two. The Emperor's "dark half" fell to Hell and acquired more power, while his light half–the Emperor they now see–ascended to Heaven. Knowing that this Emperor is no different from the other, Minwu, Josef, Scott and Ricard defeat the Light Emperor. As he dies, he tells them the struggles of violence and war will continue as long as humans exist.
Final Fantasy III[]
The final boss is the Cloud of Darkness. When Xande attempted to destroy the Crystals to freeze time so he would never die, he created an imbalance in light and darkness. This summoned the Cloud of Darkness, whose purpose is to return everything to nothingness when the balance is disrupted.

However, Zeromus claims he cannot die, for he will exist as long as hatred lurks in the hearts of men.
Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-[]
The final boss is Rydia?. Appearing within the Sealed Cave, Cecil and his allies mistake her for the real Rydia and take her to the Tower of Babil, where she gains the power to summon Rydia's Eidolons and then vanishes. Followed further up the tower she is revealed as an imposter and attacks the party with the Eidolons, eventually calling Bahamut. The real Rydia arrives to call Bahamut to his senses with the Mist Dragon, and the group defeats her.
Unbeknownst to the party the fake Rydia was the first Maenad, and her success prompts the Creator to mass-produce the Maenads in Rydia's image with the power of Black Magic and the art of summoning as she has.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]
The final boss is the Creator. It occupies the True Moon, which it uses for interstellar travel. Concerned about whether evolution is a necessity and wishing to conduct experiments regarding the evolution of life, it created a host of Crystals to record the history of a world and distributed them upon planets which held the promise of life, including the Blue Planet. It has since deemed the races of the Blue Planet failures and returned to reclaim the Crystals and exterminate all life on the planet.
The party confronts the Creator in a multitude of forms as its life support systems malfunction and cause it to mutate and lose control of its senses. After the Creator's defeat, the party flees the True Moon as he attempts to destroy them. The Maenads aid in their escape, and the True Moon departs the planet in peace.
Final Fantasy V[]
The final boss is Neo Exdeath. When Exdeath merged the two worlds to unleash the powers of the Void, he entered its deepest depths to seize control of it.
The party first engages Exdeath in his true form as an evil, sentient tree. Upon his defeat Exdeath is consumed by the Void and transforms into Neo Exdeath. Upon his destruction the two generations of the preceding Warriors of Dawn and the current Warriors of Light recreate the Crystals and the Void is sealed away.
Final Fantasy VI[]
The final boss is Kefka. Using the power of the Warring Triad, Kefka shifted the planet into the World of Ruin, destroying the world as its people knew it. He rules over the civilization's ashes as a god. Deciding that the fate of all life is to be destroyed, Kefka makes it his goal to destroy the planet and all life on it.
The party first battles the Statue of the Gods, nine enemies divided among three tiers, in sequential order. After they are defeated, the party battles Kefka himself. With his destruction, the source of magic is gone and magicite, espers and magic vanish from the world.
Final Fantasy VII[]
The final boss is Safer∙Sephiroth. After using the Black Materia to call Meteor to hit the Planet, Sephiroth prepares to absorb the Lifestream and become a god. The party descends into the Northern Cave and enters the planet's core where Sephiroth is containing Holy, the only force strong enough to stop Meteor.
The party first fights Jenova∙SYNTHESIS, the final Jenova spawn, before being drawn into the deepest part of the cave to engage Sephiroth as Bizarro∙Sephiroth. When it is defeated Safer∙Sephiroth emerges. After Safer∙Sephiroth is defeated, there is one final battle against Sephiroth fought one-on-one with Cloud, but is a scripted encounter and cannot be lost.
Final Fantasy VII Remake[]
The final boss is Sephiroth. After defeating the Whispers in the singularity, the space warps into a surreal terrain of debris. Sephiroth separates the party and Cloud fights him alone for a while before being pushed back. He receives help from another party member, and after Sephiroth paralyzes them, yet another party member. The party defeats Sephiroth, cancelling his special attack, but he persists and pulls Cloud to a metaphysical dimension he describes as the "edge of creation" and offered an alliance to defeat fate. Cloud refuses and duels Sephiroth in a cinematic battle. Sephiroth disarms Cloud and leaves with a statement that he has "seven seconds until the end".
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth[]
The final battle sequence was mostly based on Kazushige Nojima's script, but the first proposal has two more fights, which were cut for length and being too tiring for the player. Getting a Game Over initially meant starting from the beginning of the entire sequence, and the developers made a feature to allow the player to continue from the current phase just because of this.[1]
The final bosses are Jenova Lifeclinger, Sephiroth Reborn, and Sephiroth.
Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII-[]
The final boss is Zirconiade. A so-called "Ultimate Summon", Zirconiade is summoned with four support Materia, in the meantime draining the life energy of Avalanche's leader Elfe, who had Zirconiade's Materia implanted in her hand by Professor Hojo. Fuhito, Avalanche's scientist, plans to use Zirconiade to eradicate all life on the planet and return their energy to the Lifestream so it can heal from Shinra's damaging influence.
With the combined efforts of the Turks, their former leader Verdot, and Elfe's second-in-command, Shears, the Turks gather the four support Materia, which are seized by Fuhito. Attempting to summon Zirconiade, Fuhito offers his own body as a sacrifice, transforming from the power surge from Zirconiade. With Fuhito killed, Avalanche enters a pocket dimension Zirconiade is emerging from and destroy it, saving the planet.
Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-[]
The final boss is Omega Weiss. When Deepground kills many innocents to call the strongest Weapon, Omega, it appears over Midgar. Believing the mass deaths are a sign the planet is dying, Omega prepares to gather the Lifestream and depart into space, leaving the planet a lifeless husk.
Omega was taken over by Weiss, the Deepground commander. Vincent Valentine, a human with the power of Chaos, goes inside the Weapon to fight Weiss directly. Vincent defeats them both, destroying Omega and saving the planet.
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-[]
The final boss is Genesis Rhapsodos. Orchestrating a war against Shinra with Dr. Hollander to stop his degradation and find a cure for his condition, Genesis retreats to the ruins of Banora. He finds the Gift of the goddess, which he believes is the cure he needs.
Channeling the power of a massive Materia deep in the Banora Underground, Genesis becomes Genesis Avatar, but upon being defeated is restored to his normal form. Human and cured of his degradation, Genesis challenges Zack to a final duel, and is struck down. There is a final enemy encounter after the battle, but it is scripted and the player's actions do not affect the outcome, so the battles with Genesis are the final challenge.
Final Fantasy VIII[]
The final boss is Ultimecia. Manipulating the events of the present from the future to find Ellone and enact time compression, Ultimecia's ultimate desire is to absorb all time and space and become an omnipotent god. The party uses Ellone's power and Ultimecia's magic to enact and stall time compression, and they make their way into the future and arrive at her castle.
The player first battles Ultimecia in normal human form, and when defeated she summons Griever. When Griever is defeated Ultimecia junctions herself to it, creating a hybrid of the two. When this fusion of Ultimecia and Griever is defeated, Ultimecia herself in her final form is fought. With her defeat, the timestream is restored and the party escapes back to their own time as time compression ends.
Final Fantasy IX[]
The final boss is Necron. Distraught over his mortality and unwilling to let life continue without him, Kuja intends to destroy the Crystal that is the source of all life deep within Memoria. Necron, as the essence of death itself, takes this as evidence that all life exists only to die. It believes mankind is ready to accept this truth and return to nothingness, where they will not know the fear and despair that drove Kuja to such extreme lengths.
The party first fights Deathguise, a monster summoned by Kuja, before engaging Trance Kuja himself. While it is not made immediately apparent, it is possible to return to the previous screen to save after defeating Deathguise, but engaging Trance Kuja initiates the final sequence of the game. Upon his defeat he casts Ultima, killing the party and sending them to Necron's realm, the Hill of Despair. After proving to Necron they cherish life and want to live despite knowing they will die, Necron fades away.
Hades was originally planned to be the final boss, but was changed to an optional boss later in development. The concept artwork at right of the final battlefield shows the party fighting Hades instead of Necron.
Final Fantasy X[]
The final boss is considered to be Braska's Final Aeon. The party enters Sin with intent to find Yu Yevon's spirit inside, which possesses any Final Aeon that destroys Sin and transforms it into a new Sin in an endless cycle.
The player engages Braska's Final Aeon, the most recent Final Aeon to become Sin, formed from Jecht ten years ago. With Jecht's death Yu Yevon seeks a new host. Yuna summons her aeons one by one, allowing Yu Yevon to possess them and then killing them. With all aeon vessels gone, Yu Yevon manifests as a bug-like creature that is fought as the game's final battle. With his defeat, Sin is destroyed for good and Spira's cycle of death ends.
While Yu Yevon is the final encounter, the battle with him and the preceding aeon battles have the party under permanent Auto-Life, so it is impossible to lose unless the player deliberately petrifies their own party. Furthermore, Yu Yevon's focus on Gravija to attack makes him almost entirely unable to kill the party.
Final Fantasy X-2[]
The final boss is Shuyin. A tormented spirit from Zanarkand a thousand years ago, Shuyin attempted to activate Bevelle's ultimate machina weapon, Vegnagun, to end the war between Zanarkand and Bevelle before his lover Lenne was forced to fight.
The both of them killed, Shuyin remained as an unsent, his grief and hatred twisting his mind, and he came to desire to use Vegnagun to destroy all of Spira and end humanity's constant fighting and struggles. Fought deep in the Farplane after destroying the various parts of Vegnagun (tail, leg, body head), the Gullwings defeat Shuyin. Lenne's spirit appears to him to soothe him and the two fade away to rest in peace.
Final Fantasy XI[]
The original final boss is the Shadow Lord. Residing in Castle Zvahl, the Shadow Lord commands Beastmen to attack the three civilized nations, thus beginning the Crystal War. In truth he was a Galkan Talekeeper named Raogrimm, manipulated by the two Zilart princes and mysterious black magicite. As the heroes defeat him after his resurrection, he returns to his senses and apologizes for the chaos he has caused. However, the Zilart princes appear and summon the Ark Angels to kill him and the player.
Raogrimm then sacrifices himself to give the heroes enough time to escape. He is later met again in the dark world Dynamis, where he has once again been transformed into a being of destruction, the Dynamis Lord, under the influence of the dimension's dark energy. The player defeats him and he vows to become the protector of Dynamis for eternity, to ensure none of its creatures escape into the real world.
The Shadow Lord can also be fought as part of the Campaign in the past, where he is at his full strength and wears a suit of darksteel armor.
Rise of the Zilart[]
The final boss is Eald'narche. Wanting to open the gates to paradise, he tries to stop anyone who would hinder his plans. Eldest of the two Zilart princes, he uses his mind reading abilities and started the Crystal War by manipulating the Shadow Lord, eventually using his memories to awaken the floating shrine Tu'Lia. He is defeated when he attempts to open the gates to paradise, which would in effect destroy Vana'diel.
Rise of the Zilart also expanded the national campaigns from the original in different directions after defeating the Shadow Lord. The final bosses of these expanded campaigns are Zeid for Bastok, Warlord Rojgnoj for San d'Oria, and Tatzlwurm and Yali for Windurst.
Chains of Promathia[]
The final boss is Promathia. The Twilight God, he is chained and bound, completing his reign when Nag'molada, a Kuluu who longs to become a Zilart, wishes to learn the truth of creation. He is defeated with the combined efforts of Prishe, Ulmia, Selh'teus, and others.
Treasures of Aht Urhgan[]
The final boss is Alexander. A massive Avatar summoned to bring the empire into a state of peace; however it was fated to duel with Odin, the Dark Divinity, and bring about Ragnarok. This cataclysmic threat was ultimately stopped when Grand Vizier Razfahd held back Alexander, and the Corsair Prince Luzaf restrained Odin, sending the two beings back to their realm.
Wings of the Goddess[]
The final boss is Lilith Ascendant. Lady Lilith is the custodian of the true Vana'diel where the Crystal War still wages on. She aims to stop the goddess Altana from using Atomos to erase her reality from existence and replace it with a more peaceful Vana'diel where the war is over (the player's world). She transforms into Lilith Ascendant after absorbing the power of a Champion of the Dawn from Lilisette, her alternate self from the player's dimension.
A Crystalline Prophecy[]
The final boss is the Seed Crystal. A sentient crystal from ages past, it was drawn to the world by the ancient song Memoro de la Ŝtono resonating within Emeline's heart. As the song itself prophesies destruction, the Seed Crystal seeks to return Vana'diel to the darkness from which it was born. It was banished by both the efforts of the player and the song's antiphon, the Ode of Life Bestowing, through the peoples' will to live.
A Moogle Kupo d'Etat[]
The final boss is Riko Kupenreich. A notorious loan shark, the player's mog house moogle had to take out a loan to cover fees. It was later revealed that he had come into contact with magicite, and entered into a deal with a corrupt real estate owner in a plot to gain ownership of all Mog Houses.
A Shantotto Ascension[]
The final boss is a double battle against Domina Shantotto and Belle Shantotto. After Shantotto attempted to perfect a spell for inter-dimensional travel, she was drawn into another dimension with the Shantotto of that realm crossing over to take her place while being splintered into two beings: Domina Shantotto and Belle Shantotto. Forming an army of Tarutaru to conquer Vana'diel and turn everyone into a Shantotto-clone, the two halves are stopped by the realm's true Shantotto and are convinced to return to their dimension to preserve the order of things.
Abyssea[]
The final boss is Shinryu, the Wyrm God and an evolved form of an alternate universe's Promathia.
In the alternate universe of Abyssea, the final battle between Prishe, The Adventurer, Selh'teus and Promathia went very differently. Instead of killing Promathia, as they did in Vana'diel, Promathia succeeded in absorbing the darkness in Selh'teus and the light within The Adventurer, unleashing hordes of monsters on the main land and transforming himself into his new dragon form.
Seekers of Adoulin[]
The final boss is Hades, a dark entity sealed away centuries ago by King August. Originally an Elvaan who gave up his humanity to gain his dark powers, Hades plots to disrupt the natural flow of life, death and reincarnation in order to usher a paradise of darkness. After being beaten by Arciela and the player while possessing the body of Melvien, The Adoulin Minister of Finance, Hades draws on the dark world Tartarus to purge the last of his humanity and transforms into a monstrous, mechanical form. When that fails, he tries to flood the world with the darkness in Tartarus, only to be foiled by his old enemy, King August.
Rhapsodies of Vana'diel[]
The Cloud of Darkness is the true final boss for the entire original ten year storyline, with the end credits playing after its demise. Due to Promathia's destruction, despite Vana'diel's attempt to balance itself without the God of Twilight, the Cloud attacks the world in the near-future. It is only after Iroha travels back in time to seek out the Adventurer to change history that it becomes possible to face and defeat the Cloud of Darkness in physical form.
The Voracious Resurgence[]
Chaos is the final boss of Final Fantasy XI: The Voracious Resurgence. He is a former Avatar that 5000 years ago waged war on all new life. He was defeated by an alliance of beastmen, but scattered eggs across the land so that he may be reborn.
Final Fantasy XII[]
The final boss is The Undying. Using the knowledge provided by Venat to manufacture nethicite, the Archadian Empire and Vayne conquer the Kingdom of Dalmasca and set their sights on the rest of Ivalice, antagonizing the neighboring Rozarrian Empire. The party confronts Vayne aboard his warship, the Sky Fortress Bahamut, to end the battle between the Archadian fleet and the resistance, which Rozarria would use as a pretense to declare war on Archadia.
The party first fights Gabranth, and after his defeat, engages Vayne. When Vayne is wounded he transforms into Vayne Novus, summoning Sephira to aid him. When Vayne Novus is defeated, Venat merges with Vayne's dying body to become The Undying. With Vayne and Venat destroyed, Basch, Princess Ashe, and Vayne's brother, Larsa, convince the Archadians and the resistance to cease their fighting, narrowly averting a second war.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]
The final boss is Feolthanos Exultant. The self-proclaimed god of the aegyl, he refused to submit to the Occuria and took his people to the floating continent of Lemurés, sealing them off from the rest of Ivalice to avoid Occurian rule. When the Sun-Cryst was destroyed and the barrier around the continent fell, Feolthanos used the Judge of Wings as a pawn to conquer Ivalice. When the party discovers Feolthanos's true intentions, they turn their attention to him and destroy him, freeing the aegyl from his control.
Final Fantasy XIII[]
The final boss is Orphan, the slumbering fal'Cie and the power source that keeps Cocoon afloat. It shares its ideology with Barthandelus in which one of the six l'Cie would become Ragnarok and kill Orphan. This would cause Cocoon to lose power and fall out of the sky, so that all of its inhabitants would be sacrificed to force Etro's gate open for the fal'Cie to be reunited with the Maker.
The player fights Barthandelus, and upon his defeat his body is assimilated onto Orphan as a protective shell. With this shell destroyed and Orphan's attempts to make Fang and Vanille become Ragnarok failed, Orphan itself is engaged. Upon its destruction, Cocoon falls, but Fang and Vanille become Ragnarok and halt its collapse, saving the populace.
Final Fantasy XIII-2[]
The final boss is Jet Bahamut, Caius Ballad's transformed state once absorbing much chaos in his body, spawning Garnet Bahamut and Amber Bahamut to assist him. Defeating the Bahamuts earns the player the "Epic Finisher" achievement/trophy, and achieving a 5-star rating earns the "Chronosavior" achievement/trophy.
Player first fights Caius as Chaos Bahamut and in his normal form above Academia. Caius opens a portal to Valhalla and is fought on a beach. After being injured by Noel, chaos starts seeping to Caius, and he transforms into Jet Bahamut. Caius is defeated and the Heart of Chaos in his chest is destroyed, killing the goddess Etro and the world is consumed by chaos.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII[]
The final boss is Bhunivelze, the deity who created the fal'Cie and the world Final Fantasy XIII takes place in. Having used Lightning to gather souls for him, Bhunivelze plots to remake humanity, the product of his wayward creation Etro, to his design for the new world he created.
The battle against Bhunivelze has four phases, him becoming more powerful after each phase, until he is finally defeated. He can also be fought as Bhunivelze+ on Hard Mode. This battle has only two phases, but is a lot harder.
After Bhunivelze's demise the old world is destroyed and mankind's souls travel to a new world.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
Final Fantasy XIV (version 1.0)[]
The final fight in the original "Path of the Twelve" main story is against a group of Garlean soldiers, flanked by an Imperial Juggernaut, at Camp Revenant's Toll. The soldiers do most of the fighting while the Juggernaut itself actually does very little, only occasionally firing its main cannon. Eventually any imperials still alive will withdraw, ending the fight. While the Warrior of Light attemps to chase the soldiers, they run into an imperial legatus who attacks and swiftly defeats the Warrior, their Path companion, and the members of Circle of Knowing who came to reinforce them. Ultimately there was no follow up to this, as "Path of the Twelve" storyline was dropped in favor of "Seventh Umbral Era".
The final boss of "Seventh Umbral Era" story was Nael Deus Darnus, legatus of the VIIth Imperial Legion of the Garlean Empire, who tried to summon the ancient magick of Meteor Rivenroad to bring down Dalamud over Eorzea and "purify" it of its sin. Corrupted by the moon's light, the Legatus became increasingly more violent and insane, and was engulfed by its light after being defeated by a group of adventurers, becoming a being of pure hatred known as Nael Deus Darnus. The adventurers defeated Nael's powerful new form, but it was not enough to stop Dalamud's descent, which culminated in the release of the primal Bahamut, ushering the Seventh Umbral Era.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn[]
The final bosses of the main story are a sequence of boss fights against the Legatus of the XIVth Imperial Legion Gaius van Baelsar, the ancient Allagan warmachina, the Ultima Weapon piloted by Baelsar, and Lahabrea, a member of the immortal Ascians who have masterminded many of the tragic events in the world's history prior to manipulating the actions of Baelsar. After Gaius and Ultima Weapon are defeated by the adventurer and their companions, Lahabrea attempts to kill the player party directly, but is defeated instead.
Gaius, the Ultima Weapon, and Lahabrea were originally fought all in a row as part of the dungeon The Praetorium. Following the revamp of A Realm Reborn's finale in patch 6.1, the final bosses were split among 3 duties, with Gaius van Baelsar serving as the new final boss of The Praetorium, the Ultima Weapon now fought in the trial The Porta Decumana, and Lahabrea in the quest battle Devastation, all with completely redesigned encounters.
The final boss of the expanded storyline of A Realm Reborn prior to Heavensward content is Vishap, a colossal dragon who leads Nidhogg's brood to attack the city state of Ishgard. The battle functions as a race to defeat the dragon before it can destroy the last of Ishgard's defenses. The boss was originally fought in the The Steps of Faith trial added in patch 2.5, but was changed into a quest battle of the same name in patch 6.2, similarly redesigned as the Praetorium encounters.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]
The final bosses are the Knights of the Round, King Thordan and his Knights Twelve, fought in the The Singularity Reactor. When Archbishop Thordan VII absorbs the power of Nidhogg's eyes, the Ascian Lahabrea and the aether of the long dormant Warring Triad, manifesting thousand years of prayers of Ishgard, he transforms into the primal King Thordan, and his personal guard, the Heavens' Ward, transform into Thordan's Knights Twelve.
The finale to the Heavensward story, and the Dragonsong War, is a fight against the vengeful shade of the great wyrm Nidhogg, possessed of the body of Estinien Wyrmblood fought on The Final Steps of Faith. Initially appearing as a dragon, Nidhogg eventually changes shape into a facsimile of the body he stole. The Warrior of Light, empowered by the eye of Hraesvelgr, fights the dragon, surviving his song and forcing him to expend the last of his energies in an attempt to take Ishgard with him into the grave.
The final group content boss of Heavenswards expanded storyline is the Griffin, a masked Ala Mhigan revolutionary who is revealed to be Ilberd Feare, who betrayed the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and led the Crystal Braves mutiny back in A Realm Reborn. He fights the Warrior of Light and their companions to the death atop Baelsar's Wall. After his defeat, Ilberd has his own soldiers killed and commits suicide to use their lifeforce and his men's dying prayers of desperation as part of the summoning ritual for the primal Shinryu.
The very last encounter of Heavensward is against the brutish Grynewaht pyr Arvina, a scout for the Garlean Empire. He and his forces are fought in the quest battle The Carteneau Flats: Heliodrome, as the Eorzean Alliance and Garlemald both sought the Omega superweapon sealed within the Allagan ruins to use it against Shinryu. Partway through the encounter Nero tol Scaeva loans his magitek armor to the Warrior of Light to deal with the Garleans.
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood[]
The final boss of the main story is the primal Shinryu. Previously summoned by Ilberd at the end of the Heavensward story, Shinryu's subsequent battle with Omega left it trapped in stasis. It was later found by the XIIth Imperial Legion of the Garlean Empire, under the command of Zenos yae Galvus. Zenos tasked the XIIth Legion's research team, lead by Aulus Asina, to research the nature of the Echo, allowing them to reverse engineer the rare gift and artificially grant it to select members of the Legion, including Zenos himself. Releasing Shinryu from the stasis trap, Zenos used the Resonance—this artificially gained Echo—to possess it for the final battle in The Royal Menagerie.
The finale to the Stormblood story is a fight against the primal Tsukuyomi at Castrum Fluminis, orchestrated by Asahi sas Brutus (who in turn was manipulated by Ascian Elidibus) using his adoptive sister Yotsuyu goe Brutus as the host of the primal, in an attempt to sink the prisoner exchange between the newly liberated Doma and the Garlean Empire.
The final group content bosses of Stormblood's expanded storyline are Annia and Julia quo Soranus, the personal guards of Emperor Varis zos Galvus. They are fought in the battle in The Ghimlyt Dark as the Empire moves to retake Ala Mhigo. The battle in the Grimlyt Dark continues with a quest battle against the Ascian Elidibus, possessing the body of Zenos, in A Requiem for Heroes. Though possessing a combination of Zenos's superior fighting skill and Elidibus's dark magic, the Ascian initially falls. However, his immortality, combined with an ill-timed communication from an enigmatic figure from the First that cripples the Warrior of Light, giving the Ascian the upper hand. It is only through the timely intervention of Estinien Wyrmblood that the Warrior of Light is saved, and Elidibus forced to retreat.
Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers[]
The final boss of the main story is Hades in The Dying Gasp. An Ascian better known by his title of Emet-Selch, he orchestrated the Flood of Light that threatened to destroy the First by rejoining it with the Source.
The finale to the Shadowbringers story is a fight against the final unsundered Ascian, Elidibus under the guise of the primal Warrior of Light—empowered by him possessing the body of Ardbert, a Warrior of Light from the First, and the realm's newly restored devotion to their saviours—at the Seat of Sacrifice atop the Crystal Tower, culminating the machinations of the Paragons of the Source.
The final group content boss is Lunar Bahamut, the first of the Telophoroi primals, fought in the ancestral home of the Amalj'aa, Paglth'an. This is followed by the quest battle Death Unto Dawn, which sees the Eorzean Alliance battle against an imperial army at Carteneau Flats and the Telophoroi primals. This culminates in a sequence of fights against Lunar Odin, Lunar Ravana, and Lunar Ifrit.
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]
The final boss of the main story is the Endsinger, the manifestation of the despair and nihilism of the dead civilizations of the universe brought into existence through Meteion's powers using dynamis in The Final Day. Desiring to bring all of creation to oblivion, the Warrior of Light must defeat her to bring an end to the Final Days on Etheirys. The subsequent quest battle Endwalker acts as the capstone to the expansion, with the Warrior of Light fighting against Zenos viator Galvus at the edge of existence, having originally formed a temporary alliance with the exiled prince to defeat the Endsinger, which Zenos considered a "distraction" to their fated rematch.
The finale to the post-Endwalker story is a fight against an extremely powerful voidsent created by a fusion of the great wyrm Azdaja and the lingering remnants of Zodiark's aether on the Thirteenth's moon, Zeromus, in The Abyssal Fracture. Having been created by Golbez, he planned to use Azdaja's longing for home to drive Zeromus into destroying the barrier between worlds and cause an Umbral Calamity on the Source.
The very last fight in the Endwalker main story is a quest battle against a giant colibri in The Game Is Afoot, while going on a hunt with Wuk Lamat as a way of getting to know each other before departing for Tural.
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]
The final boss of the main story is the Queen Eternal. She is Queen Sphene who has shed her memories so that she may harvest the souls of the people of Etheirys without remorse in order to maintain the Endless. She is encountered within the The Interphos within the former realm of Alexandria where Sphene had placed the Endless so they may reside there after their living selves have died.
Final Fantasy XV[]
The final boss is Ardyn, whose true name is Ardyn Lucis Caelum, a former resident of Lucis who was once chosen by the Crystal. Now he is an immortal tainted by the power of daemons who was denied ascension. Noctis and his friends defeat Ifrit, a malevolent Astral summoned by Ardyn. Noctis prevails with the help of Bahamut and Shiva. They enter the throne room of the Citadel to confront Ardyn who incapacitates Noctis's friends, and the two duel one another alone. Both once blessed as Chosen Ones, this is a battle of kings.
Ardyn can use almost the same abilities as Noctis, having the same royal arms, warp-strike and Armiger abilities (although with a magenta-red glow as opposed to Noctis's blue), along with his dark, daemonic powers. The battle is set in three phases, with the last phase being a final clash of swords. Noctis finishes Ardyn off with the Sword of the Father.
Ardyn is a rare final boss in the series that he doesn't transform.
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Gladiolus[]
The final boss is Gilgamesh, faced in the depths of the Tempering Grounds. After proving his worth to Gilgamesh as the Shield of the King, Gladiolus claims the Genji Blade as a battle trophy.
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto[]
Both Barbarus and the Immortalis could be considered the final boss. The player cannot save the game between the battles, but if they lose against the Immortalis, they can try it again. Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia[]
As a live service game, Opera Omnia's story was split into several acts, each with its own climactic final boss.
- The final boss of Act 1 is the Blackened Will, a creature buried deep in the Dimensions' Labyrinth that nearly consumes the spirit moogle Mog in an effort to destroy the world as it existed. Mog, however is able to break free enough to weaken it for the heroes to destroy it. Though Kefka spares no shortage of effort to create another similar creature later in the story, his half-baked plan is quickly foiled by the other warriors.
- The Interlude chapter introduces the Planesgorger as its final boss. The warriors rally to protect the World of Respite's Crystal of Light, but in the end, the beast has already consumed and destroyed it.
- Act 2's final boss is Shinryu, the massive dragon intent on devouring everything in its path and erasing all of existence, including the gods that fashioned the world. Though it succeeds in consuming the Crystal of Darkness, the Warrior of Light sacrifices himself and becomes locked in battle with Garland, buying enough time for an as-yet-unknown will to evacuate the other warriors to a completely new realm.
- Act 3's final boss is the pure form of the Cloud of Darkness, taking on their ultimate form as seen in Final Fantasy III. Although they have manifested many times in the story, their full presence was made possible by an overflow of light in the renewed world of the gods; and yet they also drew strength from the chaotic energy encircling Jack Garland and four of Spiritus's warriors who in turn had regained their complete memories and powers. Just as in Final Fantasy III, the Cloud of Darkness was fully powered and easily beat back all who dared to challenge them; and only by the joint efforts of light and darkness were they weakened and ultimately defeated.
- Act 4's final boss, and the final boss of Opera Omnia as a whole as service is terminated, is Garland, taking the giant form of the Cloudsea Djinn from Yoshitaka Amano's concept artwork for Final Fantasy; this appearance was also one of Garland's alternate outfits in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.

The player faces a gauntlet of five boss battles: Segwarides with only Lann's stack; the Plumed Knight with only Reynn's stack; Pellinore (the true form of the Plumed Knight), then Exnine Bahamut in two forms.
Even after being defeated, Brandelis gets up as if nothing happened. As the reverse-summoning begins, Lann entraps Brandelis in multiple crystal cages with the combined efforts of Reynn and the freed spirits of their parents Lusse and Rorrik. The cages break and Brandelis grabs hold of Hauyn as they are being taken through the portal. Reynn frees Hauyn, but both twins hold Brandelis in place as they are eventually taken through the Ultima Gate as well, ending the Bahamutian Federation's time in Grymoire for good.
If the player has not finished every Intervention quest before facing the final bosses, the player can still fight them again until they do. In the Maxima version, after the three superboss battles are cleared, a rainbow portal appears in Plaza 99 where the player can fight Exnine Bahamut again. In these fights, Exnine Bahamut is much stronger and adds new moves to his arsenals.
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius[]
The Chaotic Darkness is the final boss of season one, a giant vision summoned by Sol. It is formed by hundreds of years of humanity's negative emotions, which Sol molded together. It first appears as a large skull with two skeletal arms, all emerging from spacial distortions. It mutates into a mix of monsters. It is defeated by Rain and his party on top of the Invincible as the prayers of Lapis weaken the monster.
Emperor Vlad is the main antagonist and final boss of season two. He is the tyrannical secret ruler of Aldore who has used soul replication to create proxies. His true body is a gargantuan three-headed ogre with a crystal in his forehead that houses his true soul. As the party destroys the crystal, they are trapped in a pocket dimension as the remnant of Vlad's soul clings to life, summoning smaller, but still powerful copies of his ogre form. Rain, Lasswell, and Raegen are aided by the visions of several of their deceased comrades in felling the beast. The three royal descendants battle against the remnant of Vlad's soul who descends onto lunacy and hysteria, defeating the mad dictator once and for all and terminating his reign of terror.
The Will of Equilibrium is the final boss of season three. Once the benevolent Will of Light who had asked Fina for help, it went mad with a thirst for vengeance after the loss of the Will of Oblivion, who was extinguished by Fina's sacrifice. Being resurrected herself with the last of the Will of Oblivion's powers, the Will of Light assumed the former's identity and later embraced the epithet of Will of Equilibrium, now using the powers of both Light and Hollow to wipe out humanity's free will in the Farplane as revenge for the loss of her counterpart.
It confronts Fina's party assuming a twisted female angelic form with a dark male humanoid emerging from her, symbolizing herself and the Will of Oblivion. Her female form becomes an enlarged floating head irradiating light from her eyes and mouth with feathered gold hair in a last attempt to kill Fina and her party, but is defeated.
Still alive but now as the Will of Light, she lashes at Fina's attempts at peace who holds her ground and convinces the Will to look beyond her sense of equilibrium. The Will doesn't fully agree, believing she is being denied. Rinora summons a remnant of the Will of Oblivion resting within him, whom Fina and Roca restore to normalcy. The Will of Light ceases her hostility with both Wills deciding to not interfere any further into human affairs and let them carry the world onwards. As an act of penance, the Wills restore Daisy who had turned into light to resurrect Fina. This makes it one of the few instances in the series where the final boss is not felled and amends their ways.
War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius[]
Sterne (Knight of Ruin) is the final boss of season one. After defeating Fennes warlord Muraga Fennes, Mont Leonis goes to face his younger brother in a destined battle to determine the fate of Leonis. After felling scores of Fennes troops the two siblings face off in a private duel, which ends with Mont's triumph after a gruelling battle. Mont mourns his defeated brother and takes his broken mask and departs, unaware that Sterne ultimately survived the encounter.
Sterne is more of a cinematic encounter as he's faced in a battle which forces the use of Mont as the only unit that can be deployed and without any equips, Esper or Vision Card at disposal. To compensate for this, Sterne's stats are low, allowing for a rather easy victory. In more traditional final boss fashion, Muraga's Crystalite Beast form faced in the previous Scene can be considered a more worthy challenge, having several thousand HP, multiple parts and a wide arsenal of tricky abilities.

Afterwards, he returns to the Chaos Shrine 2000 years in the past, thanks to his allies that have become the new Four Fiends. With the plan for the new Warriors of Light to be born in Cornelia, this ensures Lufenia will refrain from interfering with the world. Now going by his last name, "Garland" awaits on his throne, where the warriors arrive to battle him.
