Barak, Son of Krase was a Klingon male who appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
He was portrayed by the late Mark Lenard, who in addition to being the first actor to portray Sarek, also played the Romulan Commander in the Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror".
An officer in the Klingon Empire's Defense Force, he commanded the K'tinga class IKS Amar in 2273, and led a task force consisting of the Amar and two sister ships. While out on patrol, the task force became aware of a large cloud moving through Klingon space, and intercepted the cloud. Barak decided to extend the traditional Klingon response and ordered his task force to fire photon torpedoes at the cloud. After the task force fired several torpedoes, Barak and his crew watched as the torpedoes apparently reached their target. Believing they had struck a great blow against the cloud, Barak ordered evasisve manuevers. He then sent a message back to the Empire stating that he and his task force were continuing to attack, which was intercepted by a nearby Starfleet listening station.
It was then that the cloud, later determined to be the ancient Earth space probe Voyager 6 who by then identified itself as V'Ger, decided to respond. V'ger fired a plasma energy bolt at one the task force ships, promptly disintergrating it while Barak and his crew watched in stunned silence. Seeing another plasma bolt heading their way Barak had his crew prepare the rear torpedo launcher. Barak could only watch as the bolt absorbed the torpedo. Just before the bolt hit the Amar, Barak had his crew fire another torpedo which was equally ineffective. The bolt hit the Amar and began to envelop the ship in energy. The energy penetrated the bridge, instantly disintergrating Barak and his bridge crew. This was soon followed by the entire ship disappearing in a haze of plasma energy. The crew of the Starfleet outpost then calculated the course of the cloud and saw it was on a direct course for Earth.
