- This article is about the location. For the namesake stage, see Hidden Base.
The Hidden Base[1] (ヒドゥンベース Hido~un Bēsu?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a haunted pyramid in a desert area on Earth that served as Dr. Eggman's base of operations during the Space Colony ARK incident, and a supply depot during the Time Eater incident.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Hidden Base is a pyramid in a desert resembling that of Sandopolis, surrounded by many ancient ruins and two smaller pyramids. Nearby this desert are Wild Canyon and Dry Lagoon. The ruins in the area have an Ancient Egyptian theme, with hieroglyphics being carved in many surfaces. Interestingly enough, despite being one of Dr. Eggman's bases, the outskirts of the Hidden Base were originally filled with G.U.N. flags, though they later got replaced with Eggman Empire ones.
The inside of the Hidden Base is a dark, haunted pyramid with many closed corridors and open areas with dark pits. Due to the area having been taken over by Eggman, his face is plastered everywhere inside, from statues to murals, and even neon signs in his image. At the heart of the pyramid lies a mechanized area filled with machines created by the doctor, which houses several chambers and the "Pyramid Core", a large contraption with an unknown purpose.
Features and defenses[]
The outskirts of the Hidden Base are patrolled by both Badniks like Gohlas and G.U.N. robots. Also possibly serving as a defensive feature is the quicksand in the desert, which will cause any mechs like the Cyclone and the Eggwalker to instantly sink in it.
The inside of the Hidden Base is filled with traps and is fortified by powerful Badniks like E-1000s, as well as beetle robots that can summon laser fields to attack intruders. It is also inhabited by ghosts like Boos, Boom Boos, and their leader King Boom Boo, which will attempt to scare away any intruders. At the heart of the pyramid is the Egg Golem, a guardian robot created by Eggman to dispose of Sonic.[2] The Hidden Base also contains at least one space shuttle, a computer that can access the global network and a map of the ARK, and a teleporter to the colony. Additionally, many of the doors leading to certain rooms are sealed off, and can only be open with three keys that are scattered all over the fortress.
History[]
Sonic Adventure 2[]
In Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Eggman established the Hidden Base in a desert on Earth to hide away from G.U.N., and began his new operations there.
After awakening Shadow the Hedgehog at the military research facility on Prison Island, Eggman returned to the Hidden Base when the black hedgehog asked him to join him onboard the Space Colony ARK.[3] On his way there, the attempted to take the Master Emerald in the middle of a confrontation between Knuckles and Rouge. However, this resulted in the echidna shattering the giant gem in order to prevent it from falling in the wrong hands again. Not having much use of it anyway, Eggman went back to his base, where he caught up to the news that Shadow had stolen a Chaos Emerald from the national reserve bank. Unbeknownst to him though, Rouge had put a transmitter in his Egg Mobile that allowed her to track the location of the Hidden Base.[4] As the scientist teleported to the ARK to reunite with Shadow, the bat successfully broke into the pyramidal base and warped to the colony too to offer her help to the two.
Not long after, Eggman and his group successfully stole the three Chaos Emeralds that were on Prison Island, destroyed the military base, and showcased the power of the ARK's Eclipse Cannon to the world by having it destroy half of the moon. When Sonic and Tails found that the doctor was onboard the space station, they, as well as Amy, were guided by Knuckles to the Hidden Base (the latter having learned its existence from witnessing Rouge enter the location), which they broke into to find a way to get to the ARK. When they found a dead end, the echidna volunteered to find the three keys that would allow them to progress. Eventually, however, Knuckles was attacked by King Boom Boo, but made his way out alive. After the heroes reunited, they were confronted by Eggman, who called in his Egg Golem robot to dispose of them. In the ensuing battle though, Sonic damaged the guardian robot, which caused it to go haywire and attack the doctor. This gave the hedgehog and his friends the time gap needed to get into a space shuttle nearby, allowing them to go to the ARK.[2] After neutralizing the Egg Golem, Eggman found readings of two separate Chaos Emeralds onboard the space colony despite him having six of the seven Emeralds. Suspecting that his adversaries were planning a counter-attack, the scientist used the Hidden Base's teleporter to go to the ARK, with Shadow following suit.
Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings[]
Shadow the Hedgehog is launching an assault on Dr. Eggman's robots at Pyramid Cave. His goal is to reach a spacecraft that will take him to the Space Colony ARK, as he suspects the Black Arms may have returned. He's joined by Rouge, who's gathering intel for G.U.N., with E-123 Omega providing backup, though Rouge reminds him that this is only a supply depot.
After defeating the samurai Egg Pawns and a giant Egg Breaker, Rouge tells Shadow she can take him to a spacecraft. However, she makes him promise to attend Sonic the Hedgehog's birthday party. As the episode ends, she teasingly asks if he's interested in raiding a G.U.N. base.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Hidden Base, which was not referred to by any name, once served as Dr. Eggman's hangar for a space shuttle. During a flashback, after leaving Rouge and Sonic in a desert, Shadow took the Chaos Emeralds and teleported off to Space Colony ARK. Not wanting to be left behind, the duo invaded a nearby Eggman base and took the doctor's space shuttle to chase after him.
