The Bound Jump^[1] (バウンドジャンプ^[2], Baundo Janpu^?), also known as the Bounce Attack^[3] (バウンドアタック, Baundo Atakku^?), Bound^[4] (バウンド^[5], Baundo^?), Bound Attack^[6] (バウンドアタック^[7], Baundo Atakku^?) and Bounce Jump^[8] (連続バウンド^[9], Renzoku Baundo^?, lit. "Continuous Bound"), is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. When performing this technique, the user launches a downward Spin Attack, often with rebounding results.

Description[]

When performing the Bound Jump, the user stops in midair, where they curl into a ball and Spin Attack straight downwards to slam down on any target below them with great force.^[4] When the Bound Jump impacts the ground, it will often bounce the user back into the air and occasionally create a shockwave.

In gameplay, the Bound Jump is useful for reaching targets below the playable characters with an attack just as they jump/fly over them while allowing the player to damage enemies, break weak obstacles and certain platforms, and open Item Boxes in the user's path. Also, the Bound Jump can often be strung together in quick succession to gain an extra bit of altitude until it reaches a certain height, giving the player extra altitude necessary for reaching ledges that cannot be reached with a normal jump.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

The Bound Jump first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, where it is called the Continuous Bound (連続バウンド^[10], Renzoku Baundo^?) in Japanese sources. In this game, only Sonic the Hedgehog can use the Continuous Bound, and only while he is equipped with the Water Shield and is not in his Super/Hyper Sonic form.

In gameplay, the Continuous Bound can elevate the player after impact. To perform the Continuous Bound in gameplay, the player must press // while in mid-jump. When rebounding from the Bound Jump, press // to use it again. If the attack is done on top of a Badnik or a monitor, the player can achieve an even greater bounce.

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Bound Jump is referred to as the Bounce Attack^[3] (バウンドアタック, Baundo Atakku^?). In this game, only Sonic the Hedgehog can perform it in regular gameplay, though only if he is in possession of the Bounce Bracelet. In 2P Battle Mode, Amy Rose is also capable of performing this technique.

Like in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Bounce Attack can elevate the player after impact in gameplay. To use the Bounce Attack in gameplay, the player must press / while in mid-jump. When rebounding from the Bounce Attack, the player can press / to use the move again. It should be noted that the attack can be done indefinitely.

By Spin Dashing toward a wall, jumping if necessary, then pressing / so that Sonic bounces off the floor just before hitting the wall, he will carry the bounce animation into the wall and translate the horizontal speed of the Spin Dash into vertical momentum off the wall. This trick allows Sonic to reach exorbitant heights, up to seven times as high as a standard bounce can provide.

Sonic Advance series[]

Sonic Advance 2[]

In Sonic Advance 2, the technique is referred to as the Bound^[4] (バウンド^[5], Baundo^?). In this game, it serves both as one of Sonic's regular moves and his Stop 'n' Slam maneuver. When using it, Sonic will leave blue afterimages.

When used in Sonic Advance 2, the Bound cannot rebound the player after impacting the ground as much as he normally would in other games. To use the Bound as a regular move, press while in mid-jump. To use it as a Stop 'n' Slam maneuver though, press down on and at the same time after being launched into midair by gimmicks like the Spring and Ramp. When used as the latter maneuver, the Bound will not cancel the momentum Sonic receives from the Boost Mode

Sonic Advance 3[]

In Sonic Advance 3, the technique is referred to as the Bound Attack^[6] (バウンドアタック^[7], Baundo Atakku^?) and serves again as one of Sonic's standard moves and his Stop 'n' Slam maneuver. In this game, it retains its traits and visual presentation from Sonic Advance 2.

To use the Bound Attack as a standard attack, Sonic must have Knuckles the Echidna as his partner. To perform this version of the Bound Attack in gameplay, the player must press down on and at the same time while in mid-jump. To use the Bound Attack as a Stop 'n' Slam maneuver however, Sonic must have Tails as his partner. To perform this Bound Attack variant in gameplay, press down on and at the same time after being launched into midair by gimmicks like the Spring and Ramp.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the technique is referred to as the Bound Jump^[1] (バウンドジャンプ^[2], Baundo Janpu^?) for the first time. Like in Sonic Adventure 2, it is only usable by Sonic the Hedgehog while he is wearing the Bounce Bracelet.

In this game, the Bound Jump can elevate the player after impact in gameplay. In addition, it creates an aura around Sonic which is useful for attacking aerial enemies and dealing extra damage to large enemies. However, it makes Sonic lose all forward momentum, and does not make him immune to enemy attacks. To perform the Bound Jump in gameplay, the player must press / while mid-jump. When rebounding from the Bound Jump, the player can press / to use it again.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Bound Jump retained its name from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).^[11] In this game, it is only usable by Classic Sonic while he has an Aqua Shield equipped.

In gameplay, the Bound Jump can elevate the player after impacting the ground. The rebound of the move is very floaty when compared to how the move is performed in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, giving Classic Sonic more air time. To perform it in gameplay, the player must press / while mid-jump. When rebounding from the Bound Jump, the player can press / to use the move again.

Sonic Lost World[]

In the Wii U version, PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the Bound Jump is a part of Sonic the Hedgehog's standard moveset. In these games, it is referred to as the Bounce Jump.^[12]

In the Wii U/PC version of the game, the Bounce Jump can elevate the player after impact. However, Sonic is limited to only three successive bounces with the attack, and after the third bounce, he jumps out of his ball form and down onto his feet. The damage it deals is the same as an uncharged Homing Attack and it can only be triggered in areas with no targets or after hitting an enemy, making it hard to perform. This also causes it to glitch when used on an enemy with multiple target points. To use the Bounce Jump in gameplay, the player must press / during a Spin Jump.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Sonic can perform this move an indefinite number of times per jump, like in other games. In this version, it is useful against Grabbers and similar enemies. To use the Bounce Jump in gameplay, the player must press / during a Spin Jump.

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania and its expansion, Sonic Mania Plus, the Bound Jump is called the Bounce Jump^[8] (連続バウンド^[9], Renzoku Baundo^?, lit. "Continuous Bound"). Once again, it is one of Sonic's moves. In this game, it is only usable by the player when Sonic is equipped with a Bubble Shield. It can be performed in gameplay if the jump button is pressed during a Spin Jump. Compared to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, however, there is a slight delay before Sonic can perform the move again consecutively. Also in this game, the Bounce Jump can be used to destroy certain objects and terrain, such as the damaged containers in Press Garden Zone, which can be useful when looking for secret paths.

Trivia[]

• When using Sonic's Bounce Attack in Sonic Adventure 2, if the player pauses the game and removes the pause menu with + , they can see Sonic's regular shoes in his slightly blurry ball animation instead of the Grind Shoes.
• The Bound Jump seems to exist in Shadow's files in Sonic Adventure 2, as it can be playable via recovering said files or action replay codes without any crashes. However, its mechanics are not completed as it can be used to gain altitude but cannot deal damage.
