“ | A huge whale that moves vigorously to attack his opponents. | ” | — Fatty Whale description in the Enemy Characters section of the Kirby Super Star instruction booklet |
Fatty Whale is a boss in Kirby Super Star and its remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra. He is one of the few water bosses to be fought on land.
As his name indicates, Fatty Whale is a fat blue whale, nearly the size of the room that is his battle arena. In his closed mouth, he holds a wooden pipe. He also wears a white collared shirt and red neckerchief. Upon his defeat in the remake, Fatty Whale gets a bandage on his cheek.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
Fatty Whale is fought first in The Great Cave Offensive and later in Milky Way Wishes, The Arena and finally Helper to Hero.
Fatty Whale's strategy, besides attempting to ram Kirby with his body, is using his blowhole to blow out boulders (which yield the Stone Copy Ability when inhaled and swallowed) and sometimes Blippers, which proceed to fall from the sky.
In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Fatty Whale appears with an alternate palette and more health in Milky Way Wishes and Helper to Hero, like with several other bosses. In his case, Fatty Whale appears with red skin rather than blue.
Kirby Fighters 2[edit]
In Kirby Fighters 2, one of the Rare Hats for the Water Copy Ability, the Whale Splasher, is based on Fatty Whale.
In the Kirby novel series[edit]
In the Kirby novel series, Fatty Whale makes an appearance in Kirby Meets the Squeak Squad!. He is a dangerous creature that lives in an underground lake, in a room beneath an ancient temple. The temple has a trap door that leads right to the lake he lives in. Fatty Whale will charge at any intruders while angrily spouting seawater. However, Fatty Whale knows his limitations, and will not chase prey on land if they escape the lake.
In Kirby Meets the Squeak Squad!, when Waddle Dee, Meta Knight, and the Squeaks end up in the underground lake, they are given a breather to explain important things to Waddle Dee. However, when Kirby and King Dedede catch up, the water intensely shakes as Fatty Whale emerges. Kirby and Dedede want to fight him, but Meta Knight warns them about the danger, and that Fatty Whale has the advantage in water. Everyone then paddles away from Fatty Whale, except Waddle Dee, who is not a good swimmer. Kirby hovers over to help. Daroach points out that it would be faster if Waddle Dee grabs onto the UFO that Doc pilots instead. Kirby is reluctant about this at first, but allows it, and Doc saves Waddle Dee. Everyone quickly escapes the lake and reaches the shore. Fatty Whale gets frustrated that they are now out of his range, and gives up.
