In Kirby and the Big Panic in Gloomy Woods!, Kerota, Keroji, and Kerolina secretly come to Dream Land in search of the supposed tastiest fruits in the universe--the Stardust Fruit. The fruit only grows one night a year within a mysterious wooded area named the Gloomy Woods, crawling with dangerous creatures. In order to collect it without encountering any trouble, the trio plot to tease along the rumored Kirby of the land and use his abilities to make their way through. Additionally, they take this scheme as an opportunity to fulfil their vow of becoming the most renowned villains.
They then track down their target, but accidentally take King Dedede instead, having searched solely with notable characteristics unknowingly shared by Dedede in mind. After an aggravating journey to the Gloomy Woods with Dedede, the trio encounter the real Kirby along with his friends, and soon realize their mistake. Now with the real puffball, they head deeper into the woods and discover the Stardust Fruit, harvesting as much of it as possible. Later on amidst a series of chaotic events, the trio attempt to escape with the fruit all to themselves, but are stopped by Kirby, and, after an old man named the Woodkeeper abruptly tries to steal the mystical source of the magical fruit, they witness the puffball's heroic nature. This changes their ways, convincing them to give up the fruit and instead pursue to be heroes.
